Is this to much for a Water Bill

I'm paying £49 a month with Yorkshire Water (not on a meter). My ex moved out just over a year ago, so it's just me and my 3 year old now and so we use alot less water than we used to. I was just wondering if this sounds like too much??

That's a lot. We pay £57 for 4 of us on a meter.

Are you in a flat? Is it an average of a communal meter maybe?

littleblackno · 06/05/2022 11:18

It's difficult to compare as water bills are massively different depending where you live in the country.
Mine is nearly 100 per month for me and two teens but I live in Devon where water rates are huge.

Tothemoonandbackx · 06/05/2022 11:19

Thank you for replying. I thought it sounded like too much. No I live in a semi detached house. I'm going to call them later and see what they can do.

Isn't the general 'rule' if you have more bedrooms than people you're better off with a meter?

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/05/2022 11:21

If you’re not on a meter it won’t matter who lives there as the costs are the same.

I live in the SW and our unmetered bill is for £49 pm (small 2-bed terraced house) if that helps.

bloodywhitecat · 06/05/2022 11:21

Our household is me and two little ones, I pay less than £20 a month but that is for water only, no sewerage charge. We are not on a meter either.

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/05/2022 11:24

If you're not on a water meter you are paying water rates (ie based on the pre 1989 rateable value of the property. Not to be confused with either poll tax or council tax) . You will be paying a flat rate irrespective of how much water you use.

Northernsoullover · 06/05/2022 11:25

3 of us in a 3 bed house and I pay 28 per month metered.

Hallyup89 · 06/05/2022 11:56

7 of us in a 5 bed and we pay £45 a month.

Also Yorkshire Water but on a meter.

NeedAnOffSwitch · 06/05/2022 12:31

We're in Scotland so it's in the council tax but 5 of us in our 3 bed semi is a few pence over £25 a month according to my council tax bill. (Water and sewerage.)

NeedAnOffSwitch · 06/05/2022 12:32

And that's not metered of course. Just a set yearly amount thrown in with the council tax bill.

ItsSnowJokes · 06/05/2022 12:34

On a meter and pay £88 a month. But that's because I am with Wessex Water and they are 2nd most expensive in the country the robbing gits.

This!!
The only you'll reduce your bill is to get a meter installed and hope you're quids in by paying for what you use.

bloodywhitecat · 06/05/2022 13:55

Try the Consumer Council for Water calculator to see if you'd be better off on a meter.

Laregrado · 06/05/2022 13:56

We are with Yorkshire Water, we are a household of 3 and 4 when DC is back home from uni. I have a dishwasher, run the washing machine every day and pay £32pm on a water meter. When everyone was here homeschooling and working from home etc I was paying £43.

Get a meter fitted and pay for what you actually use just like gas and electric.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 06/05/2022 14:00

£77 on a meter here in Wales - that’s with no surface water drainage as our estate hasn’t yet been adopted.

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/05/2022 14:03

Meters are generally cheaper. We switched over years ago when the kids were young, in a previous smallish house, and more than halved our bill. We are now 2 people in a 5 bedroomed house and only paying £30 a month. Our rateable water would probably be three times that.

TimBoothseyes · 06/05/2022 14:11

Mine is £16 pm on a meter. There are 2 of us here.

I'm with Wessex Water as well. I think my bill is quite cheap though.

Have you checked for leaks, are a very large household, (wasteful with water perhaps Confused)?

We are also Wessex Water on a meter. Family of 5, 5 bed house. Bills are approx £350 every 6 months, so would be £58 per month.

SaintVal · 06/05/2022 14:35

Mine is £17 a month on a metre. Just me and DS7.

Seasidemumma77 · 06/05/2022 14:38

I phoned my water company a few months ago to reduce my direct debit as 2dc had left home so using a lot less water. They refused, said they will review once they have conducted their annual meter reading. I'm really annoyed as I know I'm going to be massively in credit but could do with the money now not months down the line.

DenholmElliot · 06/05/2022 14:40

As a rough guide water costs about £150 per person per year.

DenholmElliot · 06/05/2022 14:41

Not many people are on water rates any more I don't think - but you can be sure that if you are paying water rates and the company will lose out by putting you on a meter that they won't put you on a meter.

alexdgr8 · 06/05/2022 14:45

Op, why don't you ask about getting a meter ?
