Wide plank or Herringbone

Just seeking opinions on flooring options really!

We're looking at LVT for the entire downstairs of our new house - lounge, hallway, kitchen diner, WC (excluding study which will be carpet).

I keep swaying between my original wish of herringbone, to looking at wide plank options

What are people's thoughts on either of the above?

I have just had quite large herringbone throughout downstairs and I do love it, but I do think it might date quite quickly. If you have herringbone the fitting may be more expensive, it took our builder a lot longer than he expected and he said he would price accordingly next time. He did an amazing job ensuring the pattern went all through the downstairs of the house. We had wide plank in the bathroom and it was down in about 5 minutes.

Dislike herringbone. Looks fussy and busy and I agree with PP it will date.

Happydays321 · 17/03/2022 14:12

I've got LVT in my whole downstairs, I chose it and it's practical but I am not overly keen on it. It's a bit plasticky.

Sometime on another thread suggested to someone thinking of buying LVT to buy a whole box of the one they decided on to check they liked it when they saw a lot of it laid out.

I wish I'd done this, if I had I'd have gone for a different flooring.

We went for herringbone and I was a bit worried it would be too fussy but it’s remarkably neutral. I love it more than I could imagine. But then I’m very “unfashionable” in mn terms as I’m getting a new kitchen this year and it’ll be navy because I think navy kitchens look lovely.

Dpup isn’t keen on rain but you can see flooring.

We had original parquet herringbone at our last house and were intending to install similar throughout our ground floor here.

For reasons I won't go into, we couldn't use reclaimed stuff so planned using karndean/amtico LVT.

However, imho if you've got lots of antique rugs/large kitchen island (as we have 🙄) so most of floor is not on show, I actually think it's a bit pointless. Therefore we're going to go with wide plank.

It's nothing to do with herringbone dating as imho it's a classical look - especially if you're in an older property like us - just it seems crazy paying extra £££ for something you won't see a lot of!

Otoh, if like @NeedAHoliday2021 you have lots of floor on show, it's probably worth it!

Yours looks fab, btw @NeedAHoliday2021 😀

onarollSloth · 17/03/2022 18:07

What is LVT? Is it wood top?

Loopytiles · 17/03/2022 18:09

Cute puppy and nice floor needaholiday!

Also, great floor @NeedAHoliday2021.

mealdeal20 · 17/03/2022 18:17

Similar dilemma. Would anyone share a picture of their wife plank down?

mealdeal20 · 17/03/2022 18:17

Wide 🙄

DanniG1 · 17/03/2022 18:25

Thanks for the opinions everyone - after doing some research I now have a new idea....... wide plank herringbone 😂

Best of both worlds 🌎 😍

Is that Amtico @nattynoonoo821

Beetle76 · 18/03/2022 00:40

When I first chose my amtico flooring I was on the fence between herringbone and planks. Loved the herringbone look (I think it’s a classic) but ended up just getting the planks as I thought it may end up looking a bit faddy and trying to hard in a new build.
Weirdly, I ordered narrow planks as I was so consumed by the herringbone vs plank look that I didn’t think about wide vs narrow planks.
Narrow planks looked fine.
But the whole floor had to be replaced a few months later (long story - nothing to do with the amtico) and with the replacement I went with wide planks on the spur of the moment and it looked amazing!! It just looked really expensive and so much more luxurious for some reason, and it was actually cheaper to install than the narrow.
So I vote wide plank.

MrsSqueeze · 18/03/2022 00:52

How about wide planks on a diagonal. I took up the herringbone (which I choose when we moved in some years ago) and replaced with dark and wide.

SpidersAreShitheads · 18/03/2022 00:55

I’ll apologise in advance to anyone who has herringbone. I’m really not a fan of it at all. To me, it reminds me of a school hall… I also find it too busy on the eye.

I love the simple, pared-back look of the wide planks.

And I apologise again to herringbone lovers 😂😂

It's very primary school assembly hall...

Choux · 18/03/2022 01:44

I like herringbone but only if there is low colour variation otherwise I find it too busy. Here's an example of one I like and one I don't.

Wide plank is classic and simple lines. Again I'd probably like it best with little colour variation.

I would think about what you are going to prefer over the biggest expanse of space which could be the kitchen or, if you won't have a rug it could be the living room.

We did wide plank through most of the house but herringbone in the foyer and dining room. The herringbone is wider than typical as well so it all goes together. It looks great.
