Talk to me about air source heat pumps

We've just had an offer accepted on a house that needs a lot of work, including replacing an old boiler. It's been a longterm aim to have solar panels but we're also looking at an air source heat pump and had favourable comments from friends who have installed one - although they weren't on mains gas so have saved a lot not having to buy heating oil.

Any thoughts? Pros, cons? Things to watch out for?

no the engineer lived in the house previously. as someone says i put a kettle on to wash up - this defeats the whole object of having central heating and hot water

I agree. However we have plentiful hot water with our ahsp. So wrong to suggest that it’s not possible to have plentiful hot water with one. You need a water tank though in most cases.

Weird, it can't have been set up correctly. We have gallons of hot water from our ASHP for baths, showers and washing up. It's better
than a combi boiler

Sounds like it was badly installed. Or not set up correctly. Our has loads of hot water (we went for a large cylinder as we have 2 teen girls) and it has enough for a bath and two long showers.and only takes about 30/40 mins to reheat. Might be worth getting another engineer to look at your set up, especially the controls for the hot water.

Yeah, that was a bad install! We have plentiful hot water and tend to use 24/7 low level heating in winter that keeps the house a lovely stable temperature. Anyone interested in getting great fitters in Berkshire / Oxfordshire, ping me a direct message and I'll give you the name of the company we used, they were bloody marvellous.

@MrsJamin
Who installed your system please? Seems that the installer is key and recommendations of the good ones v important!
