Moving to North Wales (Coastal area)

Hello

We are a young family with 2 little girls and planning to move from Berkshire to North Wales and buy a house there.
Last week we viewed a few houses and find one house that we like in Rhyl.

We stayed there for a few days to get the feel of the area and it seems a nice place to live, it has what we need such as school, shops, sandy beach. We also talked with the locals and they are nice people and they suggested it is a nice place to live with family.

Once we back home, we checked it online and it tell us the opposite especially due to high crime which concern us. But when we stayed there it seems pretty safe areas.

We would like to get first-hand experience about the pros and cons for those who live/lived in Rhyl so we can put this as our consideration.

Thank you!

This one is amazing. I'm sure I remember these when they were new houses and it's clearly never been updated. Look at the views.

If you don’t care about the area (by which I mean, non-coastal, village) , you can get a cottage farmhouse type place with that budget

Nice little village, near the village I grew up in. Close to Mold, which is a stone’s throw from Chester. I find these inland places too dreary for me. Prefer Rhyl.

I would look at Conwy, Deganwy and Denbigh.
I have family in Bangor but it’s a bit far out I think.
Rhyl does weirdly have a sort of micro climate, it’s often sunny.

Check out Colwyn Bay Rhos - there is some lovely period property and according to DH who follows these things, is the most valuable place to invest along that part of the coast.

My grandparents lived inRhuddlan just outside Rhyl. Have spent a lot of time there and watching it decline over the last 30 years has been really saddening. As others have said it doesn't feel to me like the best place on the coast for a young family

I live just a few miles away from Rhyl, and I hardly ever go into Rhyl, always prefer Prestatyn or Llandudno. Anywhere along the coast ( Prestatyn/ Abergele/ rhos o sea etc) is much nicer than Rhyl . Good luck with the move !

bigyellowTpot · 28/02/2022 20:55

yes I've always considered Rhyl to be rundown and a bit "rough" Towyn is the same. Prestatyn, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno do look much better. Rhyl was a nice lively seaside resort in the early 80s when I was a child but then soon declined. its not a place I'd consider moving too. Porthmadog is nice or Abersoch.

erhellerr · 28/02/2022 21:28

OP will need a much, much bigger budget for Abersoch! Love Llyn for holidays though

Think about Wirral OP. Opposite side of the Dee to N Wales. Grammar schools.
