Moving to North Wales (Coastal area)

Hello

We are a young family with 2 little girls and planning to move from Berkshire to North Wales and buy a house there.
Last week we viewed a few houses and find one house that we like in Rhyl.

We stayed there for a few days to get the feel of the area and it seems a nice place to live, it has what we need such as school, shops, sandy beach. We also talked with the locals and they are nice people and they suggested it is a nice place to live with family.

Once we back home, we checked it online and it tell us the opposite especially due to high crime which concern us. But when we stayed there it seems pretty safe areas.

We would like to get first-hand experience about the pros and cons for those who live/lived in Rhyl so we can put this as our consideration.

Thank you!

@OldMMC

I live quite near but never visit, it's a town with a lot of issues. Would you consider the Welsh language school? It has less problems than the other schools in the town.
Hi

May I know what kind of issue?

We are not local from Wales so we will need English school :(

I've lived near Rhyl when DH was working nearby. We didn't have kids then. We almost never went into the centre, basically just avoided it. For proper shopping we would go to Chester. For meals out pubs in surrounding villages.

@augustusglupe

Rhyl? I lived in North Wales for over 30 years and there are so many beautiful areas, Rhyl not being one of them. What's your budget?
Hi Our budget is up to £350k for a 3 or 4 bedroom preferably (detached) house. Any suggestion? We are aiming to live near the beach. And currently, we are working from home so it can be anywhere as long as it has good internet :D

I don't think you could pay me to live on the coast anywhere near there. We lived in Beaumaris on Anglesey and that was bad enough. Dead in the winter and the tourists will drive you mad in season and don't get me started on the fecking seagulls. Nice for a visit; bloody awful to live there.

CottonSock · 28/02/2022 17:00

That's a decent budget. What about Deganwy

This is our lifestyle. The place where are living right now doesn't have nice shops in the city center, well maybe 1 or 2 restaurants. Most of the time we do online shopping or drive outside the areas if we want a good shopping center or meals.

Grin This is the opposite with us, we love the seagull sounds :D. I guess everybody has their own preference

Yes, we are well aware of the issue. Dead in the winter and crowded during the summer. But somehow we still love to live near the coast :D

I would look at Chester as the sea is not far away and have lovely schools and city centre

How old are you kids? You don’t need to be Welsh for your kids to go to Welsh speaking schools if they’re in primary and young enough

Come to Southport! we moved here two years ago and love it. You could get a detached house in a nice part of town with that budget. We live in the catchment of an outstanding secondary school and primary schools are very good too.

Ainsdale is near to us and still part of Southport, and is a lovely bustling village with plenty of shops and nice places to eat . The train from there takes you into Liverpool in about 35 mins. You'd get a 3 bed detached well within your price range, with a 4th bed around 300k. There is a massive woodland area that takes you through the sandhills onto a nice beach

Please don't go to Rhyl it's grim!

NoLongerTroels · 28/02/2022 17:25

We live just up the Conwy Valley, 5 minutes to the A55 and can see the sea and the River.
Your budget would get you a nice house here in a village 5/6 mins from Tesco with a very nice village school.

Thanks.
Yes I hear so many times Chester during our visit last week. That if we need to go for shopping we can just drive to Chester. Definitely worth to look.

Live in Rhyl.
We don't eat out/shop here. We go to Chester (40 mins) Liverpool and Manchester are 1 hour away really easy drive so if you are a fan of either then you have to be prepared to travel. Train links are great too. Direct to London in 2.5 hours.
Personally I have never had a social issue/issue with crime although I'm aware it's a bit rough in town. I've never felt unsafe here.
Schools in my experience have been good and I think north wales is a fantastic place to bring up children. I live in a nice area. You just don't want to buy anything in town.
Around the fire station is a nice area, the new build estates are nice, then the area around Rhyl High school up to sainsburys (avoiding the council estate) are all areas locals would class as nice.

It's not the most diverse place but definitely getting there compared to other areas of north wales.

augustusglupe · 28/02/2022 17:35

We lived in a very Welsh area. My DD was born in Wales so picked up the language quickly.
If you want a school that is just English then why not try Chester or the surrounding areas. It won't be so much of a culture shock neither.
I'm sure I'm stating the bloody obvious but holidaying and living day to day somewhere are very different. I'd take my time and maybe have a few more holidays in Wales before deciding.
You've got a decent budget though so you should get a detached for that somewhere in N.Wales/Chester.
Good luck Smile

Also very useful if Meibion Glyndŵr gear up again Grin

Working from home, you say?

There’s a business hub in Rhyl for people who work from home but want a change of scenery, you pay a certain amount each month but lovely brand new working environment alongside other professionals.

[ promoting so lovely m-netters move here Grin ]

Londondreams1 · 28/02/2022 18:18

But if I had your house budget I would stay working at home , to be fair

SkiingIsHeaven · 28/02/2022 18:27

Nice place if you are a smack head. Sorry. Much nicer places to live.

Subbaxeo · 28/02/2022 18:29

I live in N Wales and for that budget, you can live somewhere far nicer. Prestatyn is on the coast and is much nicer. Do you want to be able to walk to the beach? If that’s not important, there are much nicer places slightly inland-some of the villages towards Chester have great estuary views. St Asaph is close to Rhyl and really nice. The towns inland tend to be nicer than the coastal areas-Denbigh is also nice. Yet still in easy reach of the coast. If you want spectacular coastal scenery, you’ll have to look further West. Conwy/ Deganwy have a really nice feel with the castle, old town and marina. How important is connection to commercial centres?

SwedishEdith · 28/02/2022 18:34

I think you might need to compromise on the detached bit but this area is (was?) nice, if a bit retirement.
