Does this fence look silly?

In process of replacing both sides of fence with neighbours. One side asked for lower slats to stop the sun being blocked out which I went along with not really thinking about it. The fencer has almost finished and now I think it looks really stupid. What should I do? For info I know the garden slopes to the right but I am having that part of the garden raised and levelled off (covering path and retaining wall)

I like things to look even so I'd have had both sides the same.

Bushkin · 26/02/2022 22:37

Yeah the lack of symmetry would drive me insane

Blossomandbee · 26/02/2022 22:37

I think it looks odd but not awful. Would a standard height fence really affect your neighbours sunlight though considering they're surrounded by houses and garages?

booksforever · 26/02/2022 22:38

I would add trellis to the top !

SocksForceFive · 26/02/2022 22:39

The height of the fence posts doesn't help. Can they be brought down in line with the fence and then plant shrubbery along that edge? Failing that can you put trellis across the gap and grow a honeysuckle / clematis along the fence posts? Neighbours will still get light and it'll look more deliberate from a design perspective.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/02/2022 22:40

Why's he used 6foot posts and 4 foot panels? Is he planning to cut the posts down to panel level because it mainly looks odd in my eyes because of those sticking up.

TheVillageShop · 26/02/2022 22:40

It does look odd at the moment but it would look fine if you add trellis to the top or cut off the posts to the right level.

lostinabook · 26/02/2022 22:40

Nice bit of trellis will sort you out

Totalwasteofpaper · 26/02/2022 22:42

Will the fence posts come down?

Agree with others.
Trellis is your friend - I would talk to neighbours before adding it though and maybe show them how your garden "looks funny" and explain in gives light and privacy

jjanice842 · 26/02/2022 22:43

He will cut the posts down sorry, job not quite finished. Think I’ll take the hit and ask him to replace whole side with 6ft as lack of symmetry will drive me nuts 🙈

I would add trellis to the top. Yes, it looks odd with the different heights but it might grow on you.

Calmdown14 · 26/02/2022 22:55

If you are raising that side of garden will you end up higher up so the fence is lower?

I think it will be fine once he cuts the posts to size and angles them. It will soften with planting

CasperGutman · 26/02/2022 22:55

If youre going to change your mind and get six foot fencing put up, ask ASAP before the posts are cut, and this might save a lot of work!

saraclara · 26/02/2022 23:02

Nope, I couldn't live with that at all. It either needs to match the other side, or have some trellis that brings it up to 6'.

Talipesmum · 26/02/2022 23:02

It looks nice with trellis added to the top - that’s what we had to avoid shading our neighbours too much.

SpacePotato · 26/02/2022 23:05

Get it made 6ft before he cuts the posts!

Summerfun54321 · 26/02/2022 23:09

No add open trellis and grow some nice climbers. You should have done that on both sides to let light in and get a little more privacy. Tall 6ft solid fences for your garden is really overbearing in my opinion, your neighbour was right.

collieresponder88 · 26/02/2022 23:09

It looks unfinished

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 26/02/2022 23:28

Arent's the nieghbours bothered that with the reduced fence height you'll be able to see into their garden very easily, especially once the ground is raised? Confused

burnthur5t · 26/02/2022 23:43

If the posts on the right hand side fence were lowered to match it would look better

The fence on the left being so much taller looks odd though. I'd want them to match in height and I'd also paint them

parietal · 26/02/2022 23:56

As other's have suggested, don't cut the tops of the fence down. instead use them to add trellis (get a fine trellis if you can) and grow a nice plant.

ANameChangeAgain · 27/02/2022 00:04

I agree with trellis, it'll keep the lines the same, but give light an a feeling of privacy.

caranations · 27/02/2022 00:11

Put trellis up. That's what we did on one side of our garden, and it looked fine. Not that either us or the neighbour wanted it particularly, but because for some odd reason that side always seemed to get blown down in the wind.

caringcarer · 27/02/2022 00:23

It looks very odd. It would drive me nuts tbh.

pandora206 · 27/02/2022 00:28

Won't your dog be able to escape over that fence once the garden and path are raised? That would be a good point to make if you wanted to change your mind about the fence height.
