Does this fence look silly?

In process of replacing both sides of fence with neighbours. One side asked for lower slats to stop the sun being blocked out which I went along with not really thinking about it. The fencer has almost finished and now I think it looks really stupid. What should I do? For info I know the garden slopes to the right but I am having that part of the garden raised and levelled off (covering path and retaining wall)

@Alwayswonderedwhy

The fence on the left looks very high and makes a small garden look very boxed in. I'd make it the same height as the right and put trellis on top to break it up. The right hand side will look ok once the posts are cut or some trellis added.
I agree So trellis on both sides to look less boxed in and also more light and greenery

@Kazzyhoward

Even if you had 6 feet fence panels on right, it'd still look odd with the ground being lower as the top of the fence posts on right are still lower than top of fence posts on left.
I was thinking this too even though the OP said she was having the right part raised and levelled off, but I agree it makes no sense to do the fence before the raising. It is very strange to put a 6-foot fence on the high part of the garden and a 4-foot fence on the lower part of the garden.

I think it would be better for the OP to stop and think about everything before proceeding. It's not just about the fence high and there's no point in wasting more money.

Op can’t just put trellis on top she has feather edge fencing, which lasts a long time but less eversatile. This picture is of off the shelf panels. Feather edge trellis would be purpose made and therefore expensive.

Just go for the 6ft op. Your gardens are not mega narrow and you’re legally allowed your privacy.

You’ve done the right thing @jjanice842 plus once you’ve levelled up your dog would have been able to hop over easily. 6ft all round, I bet your neighbours haven’t reduced the fence on the other side to increase the sun for them.

Looks stupid. That much fence isn't going to block that much sun. They are just being difficult. Explain that you have considered it but it's not going to work

Of course you can add trellis. It fixes to the posts. Do not cut them off.

It is the best option.

I don't understand. The RH posts are lower than both the building and the LH fence, so even panelled to 6ft, it won't be the fence blocking light, but the building. Also confused by fencing before raising and levelling - won't the fence have to be redone anyway?

pickingdaisies · 27/02/2022 17:59

Stop and think OP. PPs have raised really important issues before you get anything else done. Are you raising the path height to match the lawn? If you do, the rhs fence will only be about 2ft. You'd be able to step over it. If you leave the 6ft posts as they are, you can get the fence panels topped with 2ft trellis panels. You could then replace a couple of the 6ft panels on the lhs with similar 4ft panels topped with trellis. This will give privacy but will not look so solid as plain panels all the way up.
But before you do anything, you have to get the garden levels sorted.
