Time capsule house, what is this thing in the kitchen?

TheNoonBell · 22/02/2022 20:20

Does anyone have an idea what that huge steel thing on the right of the kitchen is? Is it an ancient oven or some early form of fridge?

Here is the place tucked away: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/84010380#/?channel=RES_BUY

I hate to pour cold water on all this 19502 love (shudder)
but if the rest of the house is that dated, then so will the electrics and heating be that dated.

So you will need to go back to basics to update it, not just decor.

Personally I couldn't bear all that hideous glass walling along the corridor, but I suspect without it the hosue would become very dark.

Kitchen - I think it is a fridge, because to the left of it is the built in electric cooker? The counter top looks slightly different so I think it is an electirc hob.

The kitchen may be rock solid wood built, and salvagable, but a lot of post war stuff was crap quality

* 1950s love

and the flat roof ...

I think you ar ebasically paying for a large building plot

NoSquirrels · 22/02/2022 23:53

I’m surprised by all the love on this thread - I’m all about a bit of retro so I was expecting a gorgeous house but… that is not, in my opinion. (Although I didn’t open the videos just looked at the photos so maybe I’ve missed something charming about it.)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/02/2022 00:05

It'll be a bunch of flats by next summer with that amount of land.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 23/02/2022 00:23

Time capsule? The kitchen and the bathroom perhaps but it’s a bit hyperbolic. I don’t get the love either, I absolutely adore retro, but this is hardly ab example worth preserving, it’s immaculate but not really unique, the rest of the house is beige. Given MN love for decorating I’m surprised at how many are fawning over some this this mediocre.

Westfacing · 23/02/2022 00:40

It will be completely demolished I expect - it has no redeeming features as a house.

I find it a bit creepy - looks like it hasn't been lived in. Odd.

FurryAntiWaxer · 23/02/2022 01:45

I just love that blue kitchen. I'm having my kitchen redone and am really tempted by pale blue cabinets with oak butcherblock counters.

Maxiedog123 · 23/02/2022 02:03

The steel thing looks like the dishwasher in the kitchen in our hospital ward built in the 50s.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 23/02/2022 02:06

I think the 'controls' on the cupboard to the left are actually tea towel hangers - the kind where you sort of poke the towel in

My nana had a kitchen like that (in style not size)!

nettie434 · 23/02/2022 02:29

@berksandbeyond

Gosh I am almost sad that it’ll be updated! It’s like a museum
I shouted when I saw 'requires updating' in the listing. It doesn't. It requires being turned into a museum immediately. It's fantastic. How did the owners keep it so pristine?
A580Hojas · 23/02/2022 08:06

Pmsl at the ploppers on this thread 🤣🤣🤣

What’s your definition of a ‘plopper’? I don’t think it’s the same as mine…

It’s really gorgeous in terms of the large windows and floor space, all the cracking throughout is concerning, the kitchen is lovely, bathroom not so much, agree re the electrics, they are very old, with all the music in the house, I suspect it was such a loved house and holds great memories.

It’s an oven op, if you use the video tour you can see the dials if you zoom in,

Davros · 23/02/2022 08:24

I don't think that's Hygena QA

Hallyup4 · 23/02/2022 08:57

It's an oven. There's a modern fridge on the other side of the kitchen. Realistically though, you're paying for the land. It's in a really poor state. Every wall has a crack in it and there's mould growing around the windows. Maybe some things could be salvaged, but the majority needs flattening, unfortunately. Have a look at the walkthrough if you haven't already.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/02/2022 09:29

Every time I look at this house I find something more to like (this time the serving hatch). I would love to see a photo the day the owners moved into their shiny new house with the labour saving trouser press and serving hatch and stylish glass walls and inbuilt radio. I'm pretty sure it has only been lived in by the people it was built for.

good spot wrt all the cracks
sashh · 23/02/2022 10:33

I want to live there.

I think it is an oven because there is a hob next to it, you can se the knobs in the pic and the hob on the floor plan.

If I had the money I'd have it as a weekend home and hire it out for TV / film locations.

sashh · 23/02/2022 10:39

If you go onto the 360 there is a fridge freezer tucked just tot he left of the OP's picture.

It also has a telephone table in the hall!

Chestofdraws · 23/02/2022 11:52

Some of those cracks are quite wide, and very concerning, and the black mould they’ve tried to remove from the windows is also concerning.

I strongly suspect it’s in a very bad way structurally, and like it’s decor, hasn’t been maintained, and would cost a lot of money to make safe.

I’d certainly not wish to live in it. The plot is lovely but structurally the house is not.

FAQs · 23/02/2022 12:10

There is certainly signs of subsidence, could be tricky to get a mortgage on it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/02/2022 12:45

I don't think the structural problems would be that difficult to resolve, given that it is a single story house with a flat roof.

However I fear it will be bulldozed and replaced by a bloated MacMansion because that is what people like these days.

saleorbouy · 23/02/2022 12:48

Looks like a fridge, the retro kitchen would be worth a few £ now. Hope it doesn't end up in a skip!
