Two tone hallway ideas

We live in a Victorian Terrace so hallway is fairly narrow and dark. We have a dado rail and would like to go for two colours, one below and one above. DP and I are struggling to agree. I like greens or maybe blues, he prefers greys. Floor is also going to be sanded (original floorboards) and we will choose the floor colour according to paint colours so open to ideas there too. Stair carpet also yet to be decided.
Can anyone inspire us? If you would like to share pictures, even better!

I won't get in to a debate about colours but I'd suggest a durable washable, wipeable paint below the dado rail and the more expensive stuff above it - if you're going for chalky paint (which marks really easily)

Yes, very good tip.

Anyone else?

I think grey is too boring, personally. I'd do a do forest green on the bottom, with cream or white above.

Some thoughts. Does your DP genuinely like grey or is he voting grey out of familiarity/discomfort with anything “different”??? What kind of grey is he suggesting - there is grey and there is grey - dark or light, warm or cool undertones as a starter?

There are probably shades of blue that are kinda grey enough to work for both of you. For example the much-loved Denim Drift I find to be a fairly grey-blue. You could do that below and something paler above (just suggestions in the photos, using the visualiser app and a random photo pulled off google - Denim Drift below and Misty Mirror above & taken over the ceiling).

Would something like that work for both of you? Or would you be wanting something more adventurous.

Sorry adventurous is a snarky thing to say. More colourful I should have written Grin

We're in a victorian terrace and have just done our hallway. We have dark blue below the rail, chalky white above. Oak stained original floorboards and a grey carpet runner with bars up the stairs.

Paddingtonthebear · 18/02/2022 09:40

Would you mind sharing a pic? Sounds lovely

joleyn · 18/02/2022 09:45

Its taken us 18 months with stripping bannister, painting, lockdowns etc. So glad it's finished!!

I saw a Lick combo yesterday - White O6 and Green 06 - that would be my choice for next time!

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 18/02/2022 11:36

Victoriana were in to colour, so if you want to be in keeping with the era then I would avoid grey. Aside from that it's just personal taste.

hallwaypainthelp · 18/02/2022 11:58

Thanks all. Lemonviolet- I think he's just saying grey as he doesn't know what to suggest! He's being very non specific about his choices but vetoing all mine!

White and copper ( it’s more coppery than the picture )

Wallpaper is back! I'd paint the bottom in something durable then wallpaper above. We did raspberry below and a Designers Guild floral above. It makes a statement for sure!

ClaudiaWankleman · 18/02/2022 12:29

I also have a very narrow hallway and original floorboards - I wouldn't stain them (sounds like you're planning to in your OP?). Keep them as light as possible as it really does make the space feel as big as possible.

I'd go for a lighter colour on the bottom and darker on top, to keep the sense of open floor space and cosy walls. @MercedesBenz above is really very nice.

LemonViolet · 18/02/2022 12:36

Is that a metallic paint @MercedesBenz? Looks like a lovely finish, what brand did you use? I have some Craig & Rose metallic on order and high hopes!

Personally I’m with you @ukborn - would love to see a pic of your hall - and that sounds similar to my hopes/plans for our own hallway. We already have anaglypta below so will paint that and big patterned paper above Grin , and at the moment I want to go with a monochromic vibe in pinks and reds.

But OP is after paint and her DP wants grey so we’re probably quite far apart!

Although you could definitely get both grey and pattern wallpaper and blue/green all in one hallway if you thought about it Grin

DogsAndGin · 18/02/2022 13:20

Just happen to have this photo today as new door being fitted. But shows you the green in the very narrow hall - it’s Scots Kilt from B&Q. We get looooads of compliments when people walk in, looks really nice against the white panels

We are planning to do green and white but that copper looks absolutely amazing !

MercedesBenz · 18/02/2022 13:55

@LemonViolet
@ClaudiaWankleman

Thanks , no it’s not metallic , I don’t remember the name but only a brand like b and q or Dulux , nothing fancy like farrow and ball

It looks a lot more copper in the evening light too

MercedesBenz · 18/02/2022 14:05

Dp braved the storm to get me the tin out of the garage . It was a mix in the shop with dulux trade
Hope u can read it

I’ve got white below the dado rail and a dark red above…I’ve had it like that for 12 years now and still absolutely love it! 😊

There was an article in the Sunday Times Style magazine (13th Feb) about hallways, entitled Making an Entrance. Katrina Burroughs writes that - the job of a hallway is to make our spirits soar each time we arrive home 😁

There were a few nice ideas/examples given.

Personally, I'd also avoid grey - we did the hallway of our Victorian house in dark, battleship grey (as my dad called it, lol!) back in the early 90s. Or at least, the lower half below the dado was grey, whilst we had a bright, cheerful print room yellow above it 😉😎

I'm another one who'd use wallpaper, even if just on the upper section.

We chose F&B Inchyra Blue for the hallway of our current 400 year old home, with William Morris Strawberry Thief wallpaper (in indigo) on the landing where we have a study area. It's a fairly dark space, but we chose to embrace this and have almost black flooring too 🙄
