I'm moving into this property soon. Just after decorating ideas. The one thing bothering me is do I continue the decor in both room. The arch cannot be removed. Second pic is what I was thinking of going with.

I actually love the arch its so retro!
Do you mean you want the dark blue & wallpaper going throughout the rooms?
If so it looks lovely!
Just be careful which blue paint you get though we had painted that colour & had to switch because it got marked up so easily.

lambchop81 · 06/02/2022 09:40

Thank you. I love the Arch too 😁. No just in the alcoves next to the chimney breast and the breast painted navy. The fire will be removed and replaced with a rustic wood flooring fire surround. We are cycling as much as we can with rustic woods.

Yes continue the decor through both spaces
Carpet has to go
Love the blue

lambchop81 · 06/02/2022 09:44

Thank you. Oh don't worry carpet is going it's gross. Wooden look tiles would look amazing (that's what partner wants) but I like carpet in living rooms. My other idea was half and half not sure how that would look as dining table will be in nearest room and we have 5 kids 🙈

I think it depends if you want to create two distinct areas with different uses or make one big openish continuous space.

stuntbubbles · 06/02/2022 09:47

Yes, do the decor in both rooms. Or if you go for different decor, make sure it goes – not necessarily matching, but not clashing or tones that don’t complement.

Somewhere – pos Pinterest? – I saw someone paint the inside of their similar archway daffodil yellow, which looked INCREDIBLE, a little flash of colour and interest. You could do yours the colour of the pattern part of the wallpaper.

lambchop81 · 06/02/2022 09:49

That's what I can't decide two rooms or keep the flow through.

If continue theme but depending on how you "travel through" the spaces (sorry can't think of a less pretentious way to express this, but thinking about where the doors are and how you will use the space), you could have one space more intensely coloured than the other. e.g. living room use more of the darker colour, in accents/soft furnishings as well as on walls, to make the space more interesting. Wooden flooring sounds nice, perhaps a rug in the living room to warm the space in a similar colour?

comeundone · 06/02/2022 09:49

I'd

woodpecker2 · 06/02/2022 09:50

Cross posted - it sounds like with different flooring you should treat the rooms totally separately. Make the back room dark and snug and the dining area cleanable and hard wearing.

That's what I can't decide, it's a hard task for my brain Confused

Dark blue in living room, neutral warm white in the dining room, same floor throughout. I would go for herringbone wood flooring with a nice snuggly rug in the living room.

stuntbubbles · 06/02/2022 09:51

I think it depends on how you’re planning to use the rooms, and what the light does – what looks blue in one room might look almost black in the other.

It's a nice room and the arch is a lovely feature.

You should definitely keep the floor covering the same in both - I like natural floorcoverings like sisal, but carpet would also be OK.

You could vary the tones of the paint however.

Don't worry I understand great idea as the furthest room has less light

That's a good point. Furthest will be living room and nearest will be an eating area as the kitchen is too small for dining

Replace the carpet. This is a nice room with a lovely feature. Dark blue and white would look nice.

Another great idea. Thank you. If I tell my partner herringbone he might kill me it's hard work haha. (He's a Tiler/my handyman)

If it was me I'd continue the theme but not match it. So if you want that wallpaper use it in one room not both. You can carry the colour through by either using it on the walls in both rooms or id use it in one room and as an accent in the other. Find another neutral colour but within the same colour palette and use the deep blue as an accent. Use similar theme (but not exactly the sane) lamps and accessories etc in both rooms.

Lunaballoon · 06/02/2022 09:59

You say the arch cannot be removed but squaring off the top would improve the look and design flow between the two rooms.

Carpet will be ripped up

You have all given me amazing advice thank you. So I would like to put another question to you.....the floor??

I love the look of wooden or tiled floors but don't like the feel in Winter etc.

I'm not sure a grey carpet is going to go with my design ideas?

OP posts:
daisypond · 06/02/2022 10:04

Same flooring throughout. Carpet is fine if you like it. But you could differentiate the two rooms by having a different rug in each room, something very practical in the dining room.

ChoiceMummy · 06/02/2022 10:04

Imo that's a really dark colour for two rooms that will presumably have reduced light due to the arched wall.

If you were using lighter palette colours I think that you'd be able to decorate each side different if that was your preference.
