What microwave do people have inside a larder cupboard?

Sorry for the dullest post ever, but we are getting a new kitchen installed and I need to buy a microwave for inside the larder cupboard. The shelf depth is approx 38cm.

I keep seeing ones online that are either too deep, need lots of space around them or have a tiny internal area. I realise they all need some space but we will use it with the larder doors open and we don’t actually microwave they much….hence it’s going in a cupboard!

Replies gratefully received once you’ve stopped yawning…..

you say the shelf depth is only 380mm. That sounds more like a wall unit. A larder cabinet is usually about 550/600mm

If it's a deep cabinet with a little shelf, you can fit a deeper shelf very easily.

In my case I bought some deeper wall units (they are sold as "boiler cabinets" ) and put quite a big combi microwave in. For neatness, the one next to it is the same depth. It didn't need to be the same brand of cabinet, the same doors from the rest of the kitchen fitted.

mine has no back so that warm air can rise out for ventilation, as I didn't get an integrated microwave with the frontal fan vents.

We have a Neff one, it’s 32cm deep

If you look for integrated or built in microwaves they are generally 32-38 cm deep (a few are deeper so watch out)

minipie · 04/02/2022 23:59

And yep the inside is small, that’s the price you pay for built in

I just put my normal, existing, microwave into my new larder cupboard.

There must be integrated microwaves of a suitable depth, or nothing would fit in the wall unit here: www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchen-units/wall/microwave/

feelsobadfeltsogood · 05/02/2022 15:40

Am I missing something? Why are people putting microwaves in a cupboard??

PigletJohn · 05/02/2022 15:41

but why is the larder cabinet so small?

PigletJohn · 05/02/2022 15:46

I think this boiler cabinet is like the one I used.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 05/02/2022 15:53

We have this one inside our larder cupboard. We open the door when it is in use, which isn't all that much. It's not huge but fits a standard dinner plate www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/mwh1311b/hotpoint-mwh1311b?wgu=272125_196673_16440763396468_ff0e4f68de&wgexpiry=1651852339&utm_source=RedBrain%20Ltd&utm_medium=webgains&refsource=webgains

I just had a look on Bosch, and they were 550mm deep, which would fit in a typical tower unit, but not an ordinary wall cabinet which is shallower.

My towers are (about) 600mm deep, including doors.

I favour a big combi m/w.

LondonNQT · 05/02/2022 16:03

Is it 38cm exactly OP? As this Bosch is 388mm, however, their diagram (image 3) suggests it needs to be installed in a 550mm deep space.

When I had a new kitchen a couple of years ago, I didn't want the microwave taking up worktop space, I also didn't want the expense of a built in microwave, nor the faff or replacing it in the future. Having located it in the cupboard, I really like having it that bit higher so that I can see into it properly. I also have my breadmaker in there, with space to fully lift the lid so that I can use it without moving it.
HasaDigaEebowai · 05/02/2022 16:28

Our larder cupboards are normal depth (600) so we just have a normal microwave in there. Are you sure you’ll have enough air circulation space for a microwave?

Pashazade · 05/02/2022 16:33

I have a bog standard old Panasonic microwave in my larder cupboard. (60cm deep) I just leave one of the doors open, whilst it's in use, it also ensures you don't forget things are in there!

hoochyhag · 05/02/2022 16:41

Here's mine, cheap one from Morrisons Grin
Cupboard is 50cm depth, microwave is 30cm
I think 38cm cupboard depth would be fine. Door is open when it's on.
It works well, and as others have said, frees up your work surfaces.

hungary · 05/02/2022 17:34

if it is like a breakfast cupboard with bifold doors type they are usually 450 deep sitting on 600 worktop which gives a bit more circulation space for 320 deep microwave

Snowiscold · 05/02/2022 17:40

Our microwave is in a larder cupboard. Microwave is a cheap Sainsbury’s one, 39cm deep. Larder cupboard - it’s a big IKEA unit - is 38cm deep. We don’t have much work surface, hence the microwave going in the cupboard.

Snowiscold · 05/02/2022 17:40

Sorry, microwave is 30 cm deep, not 39.

Am I missing something? Why are people putting microwaves in a cupboard??
Because they are "unsightly" and they want hinch like clear counter tops?
Pashazade · 06/02/2022 08:10

Or because they take up a massive amount of useable worktop space and so if you can afford cupboard space for them why not??

daisypond · 06/02/2022 08:19

We only have two and a half units’ space of worktop- 1.5m in total. That’s why our microwave goes in a cupboard.

User0458832 · 06/02/2022 08:52

Have a look at ones that are suitable for in caravans as they are small and usually placed in an open front cupboard.

SunnyUpNorth · 06/02/2022 11:43

Sorry all I checked back a couple of times and there were no replies so I assume no one had replied in the end!

So it’s a walk in corner larder cupboard and the max shelf depth is 38cm, it’s like the attached image.

We are also having a counter top larder cupboard for mugs, tea, coffee, toaster etc but that’s only 30cm deep so it wouldn’t take a microwave.

It’s not an integrated microwave I need, just a normal microwave.

I want it in a cupboard so it’s out of the way as we don’t use it much. I don’t have tons of counter top space so don’t want to waste it on that. We have an integrated one at the moment but I’m going to be having two ovens n a housing unit so didn’t want to take up extra space with a microwave. As I cook quite a bit I wanted proper ovens rather than combi.
