I can move anywhere in the U.K. I really want a detached house. There's me dh and one 8yo dc.

Basically without beating around the bush I want a massive house.
£900k to me is a lot of money but I appreciate in some areas it's nothing. Getting depressed because I apparently live in an area where it goes nowhere so thinking to move areas entirely before secondary school . Anyone have any ideas for areas? I've lived in towns cities and rural. I am happy wherever.

In or around Ripon.

For the fantastic (selective) Ripon Grammar School ( includes state boarding places.

Other options are an outstanding secondary academy also in Ripon or to travel out to a small rural high school. (400 pupils).

Please don't take that list of top schools as gospel without investigating further. One is actually split into 'two' schools to syphon off the higher achieving students so that rankings are maintained.

Grantingmum · 04/02/2022 22:31

The schools in and around Hexham are brilliant, it's a beautiful area, lovely restaurants and pubs and you could get an incredible house there with your budget. There isn't much on the market now (....the market is really slow) but look at what has sold recently for that price for ideas.
Corbridge down the road from hexham might be a good shout

YellowLemonshade · 04/02/2022 22:34

Sadly I don't have £900k to spend on a house. But oh my goodness, some of these are just beautiful. Best of luck, OP - you are very fortunate. Hope you find somewhere.

Dillydollydingdong · 04/02/2022 22:35

Just think of the cleaners you'd need, and the gardeners, someone to clean the pool?

Vasectomyreversalhopeful · 05/02/2022 07:19

We live in North Wales in a Welsh speaking area. DH is from Manchester and speaks no Welsh. He has been made very welcome, has set up a running group etc. Everyone has been so lovely. DS is in a Welsh medium school as that is what we want for him but we could have chosen a duel stream school.

Some massive houses up here for £900000.

butmumineedit · 05/02/2022 07:36

Would look at Rutland, you will get a v nice house and have several good schools to choose from including -Oakham, Uppingham, Stamford and even Oundle are within flexi boarding distance

Good luck with your search

@delectablecupcakes

Thanks those properties *@senua* are wonderful I will put them on my list, what are those areas like? I am in SE and I hate the overcrowdedness, the too many cars everywhere, the same old same old although I'm starting to wonder if this is just England full stop! *@horseymum* I've never even been to Scotland. I should go really would love to but never seem to get the time in. How bad is the weather. As in how bad is bad in Scotland because I would like some vitamin D in the year Grin

@ExplodingCarrots wales. Now wales is somewhere that I'm not quite sure why but it terrifies me the thought of living there, I heard the schools are becoming more Welsh speaking only? Is that true? I think maybe I wouldn't fit in too. Everyone I've met from wales has been absolutely lovely so I'm not quite sure where this is coming from, perhaps the great unknown...

@HomeHomeInTheRange They are already happily flexi boarding in their current school and the current school works to send them onto boarding school so that is the plan, If there is a day school nearby I'd consider that though too but I've noticed 'good' schools are so few and far between the further away from London you move, or is it that they're all secret and I haven't found them yet!

What a ridiculous thing to say! There are great schools all over the UK. There are shit schools all over the UK. London isn’t the centre of educational excellence you seem to think it is.
Cissyandflora · 05/02/2022 09:20

I want the same as you op! I have 200k to spend and can probably borrow another 200 at a push. I am in London and renting. I want a big house! I should probably start a thread rather than jump on yours. Sorry

Calmdown14 · 05/02/2022 09:59

I think you need some firmer criteria or you'll be looking for ever. What constitutes rural in the south east is not the same as rural in a Scottish or Welsh sense.
The east coast of Scotland gets lots of sunshine and is drier but obviously not as warm as the south east.
It depends what you like. To me wrapping up against cold is easier than rain and I don't like 30 degrees. Anything over 20 is pleasant and we get plenty of time outside.
What do you enjoy? Areas like north Berwick are beautiful but still easily accessible to Edinburgh. Tourist centre gets busy in summer but the roads out and about are very different.
Personally I'd pick a few key towns/ cities and book a few weekends away. Unless you want to be totally isolated, you generally still want the amenities so work out where you like and then spread your map out from there

delectablecupcakes · 05/02/2022 10:53

Thanks for the links I'm enjoying going through them. Well I have spoken to some boarding schools this week and they seem happy enough if we live far away. I will continue to research day schools though.
Some great points about some areas on here.
Planning to go on some rather long journeys over the next few weekends exploring as a result of these lovely links that have houses that are way better than what my budget stretches to in the SE.

I don't know how to link to Rightmove but if you search Edinburgh you will come up with some stunning properties. Excellent schools and a mixture of country, coast and city life! That's where I would choose if I had your budget!

chesirecat99 · 08/02/2022 20:41

You should easily be able to find somewhere in Devon and Cornwall.
