I can move anywhere in the U.K. I really want a detached house. There's me dh and one 8yo dc.

Basically without beating around the bush I want a massive house.
£900k to me is a lot of money but I appreciate in some areas it's nothing. Getting depressed because I apparently live in an area where it goes nowhere so thinking to move areas entirely before secondary school . Anyone have any ideas for areas? I've lived in towns cities and rural. I am happy wherever.

I am in SE and I hate the overcrowdedness, the too many cars everywhere

But you want to move somewhere where you will have to use a car for practically everything Confused.

@delectablecupcakes I live in South Wales, there aren’t many Welsh speaking schools around this part. No one speaks Welsh where I live. It’s (mostly) seen as a dead language unless you want to work for a Local Authority. Depending where you go, some areas will no doubt use it more.

hellsbells99 · 04/02/2022 11:50

You would get somewhere nice around Chester for that price. Great place to live and decent schools. Not far from Wales and the coast. Not far from Liverpool and Manchester.

Gardeningtipsneeded · 04/02/2022 11:52

Have you thought about Norfolk?

I love it there, plenty of towns where there is something going on, beautiful beaches, Norwich is a lovely city but you can also be in the country very quickly

A huge majority of the Welsh population don't speak Welsh . So no, there isn't this pressure of schools being only Welsh speaking . You get Welsh speaking schools or schools with duel language streams . Welsh lessons are part of the curriculum but it isn't highly pressured .

No we don't hate English people 😂 What we do have a massive issue with , especially here in Pembs , is a huge influx of second home buyers . But people who have moved down here on a permanent basis won't get any grief (or shouldn't ). Many of my neighbours are retired couples who have moved down here from England. All settled in without issue .

I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/108387746

Whoops!

sausageandchamp · 04/02/2022 12:39

Do you have any friends or family you'd like to be near? It sounds a bit sad to sit in a massive house, in a random location, kids at boarding school. I don't mean to be rude- I realise some people are fairly introverted.

Old house or new house?

Renovation project or ready to move in?

Five beds?

Views?

What hobbies available locally?

@HomeHomeInTheRange believe it or not it's only been in the countryside that I can drive without getting in a traffic jam. I live on a country lane atm and no one is on the road, I'm actually surprised to see any kind of jam until I reach town.

I've moved from a large town and previously couldn't get off the driveway without having a lot of traffic everywhere. I'm asking for ideas on here precisely because it's difficult to know what's out there. Just look at my ignorance of wales!! Thanks for all those who have left me standing corrected.

I've moved areas completely and it's tough because now if I move no doubt I'll end up staying until at least dc is out of secondary so don't want to end up somewhere that won't work. The size of the house matters a lot because I have lived in small properties and bigger ones and the bigger ones allow space especially when stuck with my dh Grin
Thanks for all the links will go through them now.

I was going to say Wales until
I saw how ignorant you were.
I live in South Wales and hardly anyone speaks Welsh here. There are Welsh school if you want to use them but not many and only a handful of teachers speak Welsh.

Here?
My late DM lived in Rhiwbina. It’s very friendly.

SailingNotSurfing · 04/02/2022 14:45

I live in North Wales and there are a lot of Welsh speakers. I’m English and relocated here a decade ago. We couldn’t have been made more welcome. The same can’t be said about holiday home owners however. They often buy up affordable properties ahead of local people.

Do your research before you move anywhere. Not just schools, public transport, supermarkets, leisure activities, job prospects, entertainment facilities etc

Don’t be swayed by a fantastic house with wonderful views until you know where you’re going.

delectablecupcakes · 04/02/2022 14:52

@sausageandchamp we stay in a lot and our hobbies are at home but we do have friends, however as we have moved about over the years, including abroad, most of the time we see friends once or twice a year by travelling to them and then them coming to us, again a bigger house would be great for people coming for extended stays. There's no one I would immediately miss if we moved again.

We don't have close family in the U.K.. Most family have moved abroad on both sides so we see them when they're in U.K. or we go to them.

@Batoutofhell70 You're right I am ignorant about it and I apologise. Think a visit may be necessary hope wales will still have me!

Well not in my neighbourhood- I paid over that for a three bed terrace that needed work! Find the schools first.

outdooryone · 04/02/2022 15:18

"I really feel you need to start with researching areas and moving properly, as you do not seem to know very much about the reality of areas outside the SE. I'm not trying to be unkind either but often people from the SE want to move to the lovely provinces but the same issues exist there."

I would agree. You need to be realistic about what you give up / might miss / where family are / what the weather is like.

That said, Perthshire / Perth is worth a look - great schools, amazing countryside, and houses are reasonable.

I may be biased on that.

Bristol or Oxford?

Stevie77 · 04/02/2022 19:42

Maybe look at Knutsford, Wilmslow and Alderly Edge just south of Greater Manchester. Sounds like it’s the kind of place that’d suit you and the schools are good (and plenty of private schools too).

LesLavandes · 04/02/2022 20:18

3500 square foot is a big house. You will definitely need to move out of South East to get at least that size for £900,000. Perhaps Yorkshire?

TheBayside · 04/02/2022 20:38

Following the Yorkshire theme, if I had £900k I would move to Ilkley. Great secondary school, scenery and a high street. If you are prepared to do work something like this. If you want views unfortunately you will have to stretch the budget
