Washing machine - is Miele worth is?

Our washing machine is on its last legs and we have been looking at a replacement. When we bought our house, Miele was first choice but out of our budget, we have had a trusty Siemens for nearly 10 years which have been happy with but now we are replacing, we want a larger drum to wash duvets and curtains (DD has allergies).

Plan was Miele, budget £1k but have discovered they no longer offer the 10 year warranty (one of the big factors pushing us towards them). Warranty is now 2 years only and the machines with 9kg capacity are upper end of the budget as they had a price rise at beginning of the year.

Looking at other brands, we can get Samsung/LG for around £500-600 with 10kg capacity and all the same features as Miele. Samsung also have 5 year warranty.

Struggling to justify the Miele price tag with lower warranty - I know the parts are superior and machine made well but the fact they no longer back this with even 5 yr warranty has put me off completely. Can anyone advise if they really are worth the extra?

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for washing machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. You simply cannot compare quality of wash unless you try out various machines!

I have had a very long lived AEG and a shorter lived Siemens. We are now a Miele house. What you get with Miele is build quality. My washing machine is heavy! It’s frugal on water and it’s perfect in every way. Other washing machines don’t have the build quality and they definitely retain this. My TD, hob, oven and DW have never had anything wrong. My DW is very very quiet. That’s what you pay for. My AEG in my holiday house really swishes the water around! I’d never buy anything other than Miele now.[/quote]
Our Bosch serie 6 dishwasher is also really quiet. My only grumble is that the low hum when it's giving everything a blow dry tends to be out of tune with anything I have on the radio!

@Getmoveon14

I would go for a Miele. Ours is 12 years old and still going strong. I don't know if all Miele machines have this feature but we love being able to open the door after it has started. There always seems to be just one more sock!
Most washing machines have this feature nowadays…

I think as a single person, and limited income Miele are too expensive, got a cheaper Bosch dishwasher fine , nearly 5 years on

onedayoranother · 03/02/2022 22:26

No. I've had Bosch, Meile, Dyson, Beko, Hoover... can't say there was any difference between a machine costing £899 as one costing £299. I only use a couple programs though, so if you want more bells and whistles (though most machines provide a range of cycles) then maybe more is better.

NotMyFIrstTIme · 04/02/2022 21:18

There's only the 2 of us so the machine doesn't get hammered, and I couldn't bring myself to pay Miele prices. Got a Bosch nearly 5 yrs ago and very happy with it. That was a replacement for a Samsung, which is now a brand I wouldn't touch with a barge-pole after the appalling service I had when it was brand new.

Kudos to ao.com for their assistance getting that mess sorted.

No from me
Mine needed a new drive belt within the year and leaked at 5 years .
I replaced it , didn't want to throw good money after bad.

Maybe build quality had gone down.
I had a Bosch for over 10 years , but when I looked at the newer ones they seemed tinn-ey and flimsey .

Fferny1 · 05/02/2022 09:31

I wouldn't .
I don't think they are as good as they used to be. My parents have always bought Miele and their latest one has had several issues that are expensive to fix.
We have a 2nd LG as the first one lasted for @10 years even with lots of washing due to being a household of 6.

WellTidy · 05/02/2022 17:25

Well I never. I had no idea that Miele weren’t guaranteeing their washing machines for ten years anymore. We’ve had ours for 11.5 years and never had an issue with it. It’s on at least once a day.

I don’t think I would buy Miele to replace it, if anything were to go wrong. It has to be a sign that Miele isn’t standing by its machines as it used to, which means that there has to have been a change in manufacturing. It was their Unique Selling Point.

Trimthehedge · 06/02/2022 21:34

My Samsung is still going strong after 9 years

Leafypage · 09/02/2022 10:29

Have had Miele cat and dog hoover for 25 years and it’s still going strong! Can’t vouch for their current production standards etc, definitely a quality brand

NotMeNoNo · 09/02/2022 11:11

I'd consider a commercial machine if you are washing duvets and curtains. They aren't all launderette sized.

I was lucky enough to win the top of the range Miele washing machine and tumble drier about four years ago. They were priced at $4500 AUD each at the time, which is clearly insane money, but my god they are fantastic pieces of kit. They are super efficient and cheap to run, and very gentle on our clothes. I would never have paid that money ( I couldn't!) but I love mine. I can do all kinds of weird stuff in the washer, I even have a cashmere setting, and can proof raincoats( although I never tried this as I live in Oz). More importantly, it has never missed a beat. So, if you have the cash, I would recommend.
