Found a full sharps bin in new house

I have sealed it so it isn't hazardous, but I cannot find any way to dispose of it. Local chemists won't take it, told me to call local council environmental health. Council told me to contact local chemists.
Obviously can't put it in the bin.
There is no name/number/identifying feature of the provider or recipient on it.
I have been trying for 3 weeks to find a way of disposing of it safely.
I have no idea where to try next.
I don't know where the vendors have moved to or even if it belonged to them.
Would be grateful for any suggestions.
TIA

I don't know where the rubbish goes tbh. How would I find out if it is landfill or incineration?

Call the local drug service. If they don't have an NX on site they will be able to tell you where to go.

In my experience of working in a drug service, the staff won't care how you got the needles.

Sharpsbin · 31/01/2022 21:19

Also, it is clear that they inspect the contents of the bins!

Sharps bins are incinerated

I had gestational diabetes and had so much trouble getting rid of mine after pregnancy. Pharmacies and GP wouldn't take it, council wouldn't come out. In the end we had a nurse attending the house to give my baby IV antibiotics when she was almost a year old and they agreed to take it with them. Which was a fluke and doesn't help you.
Sorry, just sympathising

Meecrowavay · 31/01/2022 21:21

I can't see what other option you have if noone will take it though. Other than digging a deep hole and burying in the garden.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 31/01/2022 21:23

Ours from our vet clinic get incinerated at the pet crematorium for a fee.

Sharpsbin · 31/01/2022 21:23

@LIZS

Sharps bins are incinerated
Well, yes. If I can get anyone to take it from me and then take it to the correct place to dispose of it.

It's a nightmare isn't it. Might be worth mentioning what vague area you are in though as my experience is that everywhere seems to have a different system. My area for example I exchange a new sharps box for a filled one at the GP surgery. In another area I had to take them to the diabetic clinic at the hospital and in another area it had to be a pre arranges collection (which may or may not turn up).

TooWicked · 31/01/2022 21:23

My local vet will take and dispose of a small sharps bin for £7.

I've had both a diabetic cat and a diabetic grandma, and used to take both of their sharps boxes to the vet for disposal.

I haven't tried the vet yet!

I wouldn't bother RINGING the council. Look on their website for sharps collection. I've lived in various councils and always been able to get them collected as a type 1 diabetic.
Now my DD also has a sharps bin (different condition) the company that deliver her medication, also regularly collect the sharps bins.

But your council is wrong. It is their responsibility. I expect you spoke to someone either not in waste collections or someone who just isn't aware. check the website.

I would contact the Estate Agents and/or Solicitors. They should not be able to leave any rubbish behind for you to clear up let alone used needles! They should be billed for the hassle

Sharpsbin · 31/01/2022 21:29

I suppose the trouble is that it isn't mine - at least only by default as I have bought the house. Who leaves a full sharps bin in their property for the new owner to deal with?
I will try all the suggestions though. Thanks all.

Tweet kirkleeshealthwatch. They ran a big thing about this a few years ago, they'll know.
CoffeeRunner · 31/01/2022 21:32

Part of the problem seems to be regional variations.

Here, you have to give it back to who gave it to you. So if it's a prescription one from a GP, it goes back to the GP.

If it's a hospital issue one it has to go back to the hospital etc.

Council don't collect them.

Bells3032 · 31/01/2022 21:34

Councils generally only accept them with a form from the doctor and its hard enough to arrange when you have one.

GPS and chemists stopped taking them in 2019. Absolutely no idea why. It makes it impossible to get rid of them. I once had to contact my mp to arrange a pick up and we had a perscription.

Honestly i'd just wrap it in a black bag a chuck it in the bin which is awful but if they make it impossible for people to dispose of them properly then what else can you do?

Misty999 · 31/01/2022 21:37

You could lie and say you've had a baby and they are clexane sharps, you get clexane to inject after a c section. They'd have no way of knowing.

20week · 31/01/2022 21:37

Sympathies op, I still have a sharps bin that moved house with us.

Find a needle exchange. Just explain to the staff the issue you have.

I worked in one before, I'd have just taken the box off your hands. It's easier than you faffing about or it possibly ending up in general refuse and a needle stick injury occuring somewhere down the line.

Clearly it’s an issue in your area!

Our vet practice has taken sharps bins ad hoc from clients before too.

MMAMPWGHAP · 31/01/2022 21:49

I had IVF. Son is now 17 and I still have one. Should be a sharps amnesty!
