Would you live by a large pylon if you had young children?

Just that really.

Pylon would be 24 metres from the house at the back of the garden.

Would that put you off living there?

Would be ok with me. My old house was near pylons.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/01/2022 15:15

I grew up near a pylon. There was a lot of theories about the harm it could do at the time, but as far as I know all the research about them has shown no links to illness.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 28/01/2022 15:17

I wouldn’t.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 28/01/2022 15:19

Also consider resale hassle (if this is a house you are thinking of buying) - the houses in my town that have pylons very close buy take much longer to sell.

lightand · 28/01/2022 15:21

I know someone who did, and regretted it.

And someone who did, and did not regret it.

MsMeNz · 28/01/2022 15:21

no i wouldn't

whatnumber · 28/01/2022 15:26

No I wouldn't because of resale.
Also do they make noise?

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/01/2022 15:33

No, I would never buy a house that close.

stuntbubbles · 28/01/2022 15:34

Misread this as “python” and thought, FFS I wouldn’t want to be near that as an adult. Wouldn’t bother me I don’t think except aesthetically, it’s not like you can screen it with a shrub.

OliviaBond · 28/01/2022 15:37

@whatnumber

No I wouldn't because of resale. Also do they make noise?
They buzz quite loudly ime
TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/01/2022 15:37

I wouldn't buy one because of the saleability and valuation issues. If I was renting I would want a reduction, but I would happily live there if the price was right.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 28/01/2022 15:38

Oh I didn't know they are noisy - that would put me off.

YooCoo · 28/01/2022 15:38

I wouldn’t want to live there.

antidisestablishmentarianism · 28/01/2022 15:40

Are you looking at a house up for auction op? If so I saw it the other day, you can almost touch the pylon from the garden. Nice house though!

donquixotedelamancha · 28/01/2022 15:48

I find the noise annoying, so perhaps not but all the evidence is that it's perfectly safe so price would be the main factor.

Glisil · 28/01/2022 15:59

Another person who misread this as python.
🤦🏼‍♀️ Was thinking surely you mean feet not meters.
I wouldn’t, I have misophonia and the noise would get to me.

TeenTitan007 · 28/01/2022 16:00

No way. EMF and all things associated..

Moonlaserbearwolf · 28/01/2022 16:12

Never!
Apart from the fact they look ugly, I would be concerned about cancer risk.

Undertheoldlindentree · 28/01/2022 16:16

No, whatever the science, I'd never have complete peace of mind about health or resale. I'd rather risk missing out on a great house than subjecting myself to a niggling worry for years.

Thiswayorthatway · 28/01/2022 16:20

Yes, wouldn’t bother me, no evidence of any harm from them

foreverandalways · 28/01/2022 16:29

We were buying a new house off plans 20 years ago and it had a pylon at the bottom of the garden....I was so excited I didn't even notice it at the start...I watched the house being built and chose fittings etc....we had the surveyors report which stated the pylon would have a huge effect on future resale value and also an independent electrical engineer told us that under no circumstances would he ever buy the house...we pulled out 2 days before completing

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 28/01/2022 16:31

No, for resale reasons

SilverHairedCat · 28/01/2022 16:32

I wouldn't want to live there as an adult. The noise is awful for me and would be more likely to be heard by children. I do have highly sensitive hearing though. I can hear TVs on standby etc.

Plus, ugly, resale issues etc.

HotPenguin · 28/01/2022 16:34

No, I can sometimes feel the charge coming off them, as in I get a weird buzzing sensation.

2tired2bewitty · 28/01/2022 16:38

We went to view a house that turned out to have a pylon very close, the noise was very noticeable, more so than the M25 which was also very close by. We didn’t buy it.
