Would you live by a large pylon if you had young children?

Just that really.

Pylon would be 24 metres from the house at the back of the garden.

Would that put you off living there?

No I wouldn't live so close to one - many years ago I visited someone who had a lovely big house and garden with a pylon very close by. You could hear it when in the garden and she used to get migraines - no idea if the migraines were related but she had to excuse herself and go to bed.

I certainly wouldn't buy a property near one, if only for the hassle of re-selling in the future.

ivfbabymomma1 · 28/01/2022 16:41

I read the whole thread thinking we were talking about a snake Confused

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 28/01/2022 16:42

Whilst the studies of the 2000’s showed a statistical increase in childhood leukaemia cases, their is little understanding of the biological process which leads to the disease in children. It’s electromagnetic radiation, not ionising radiation, like nuclear, which has a very clear link to biological action in leukaemia.

For me, the continuous buzzing would drive me bloody hatstand.

Westfacing · 28/01/2022 16:44

There are always compromises to be made when buying a home e.g. bus stop outside your door, busy road, railway lines, football ground, a prison, anything you can think of, but a pylon probably trumps most obstacles.

thismeansnothing · 28/01/2022 16:46

We've just bought a new build and we have a pylon 50m away and can see it out our front window. Husband was concerned but we went ahead as all the pros of the house outweighed this one con. As daft as it sounds I just don't notice its there anymore. And it's not that noisy. Sometimes it crackles but you can't hear it inside or in our backgarden, only from the outside at the front of our house. I quite like it anyway. Industrial looking thing

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/01/2022 16:46

No but more for the buzzing.

Boozeless · 28/01/2022 16:50

Not a chance would I buy it. I'm sure there was a proven link a few years ago of living underneath pylons & certain health risks.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 28/01/2022 16:50

I’m being a twunt; all radiation is electromagnetic radiation; what I cock arsedly tried to mean was that the electromagnetic field from power lines is non ionising radiation, whereas ionising radiation like nuclear (alpha, beta, gamma) has a direct relation to increase in leukaemia rates. Serves me right for having 3 conversations at once.

They still buzz like a bugger though.

MistyFrequencies · 28/01/2022 16:53

No. Resale value. Would be sceptical re reported lack of impact on health.

statetrooperstacey · 28/01/2022 17:01

We are just buying a house that has pylons in the field behind it. I’m pleased because it means the field is unlikely to be built on. Hell would freeze over before I lived close to one tho . I know 3 people who have one almost in their back garden, one of them died of cancer the other one is terminally ill with ( brain) cancer and the third one has had 3 lumps removed from his head ( not cancer) . Prob coincidence but I wouldn’t feel happy .

CurryLover55 · 28/01/2022 17:02

No because I hate them & used to have nightmares about them as a kid.

WhiteXmas21 · 28/01/2022 17:02

www.propertyroad.co.uk/should-buy-house-near-power-lines/

I found this which suggests no closer than 50m. There are some other links which can provide more info.

Personally I would avoid a pylon, but a discreet little power box with underground lines would not bother me .

trumpisagit · 28/01/2022 17:04

No I wouldn't buy.
We camped in a field near a pylon once and the noise was horrible, and they are really ugly.

Scarby9 · 28/01/2022 17:04

I wouldn't live near a large pylon as a grown adult. I hate the buzzing / humming noise.

lemontingle · 28/01/2022 17:05

No way
Electromagnetic radiation

Scarby9 · 28/01/2022 17:07

Does anyone remember the 1970s children's TV show The Changes? The trouuble started with humming from pylons and I've associated the noise with apocalyptic fear ever since! www.google.com/search?q=the+changes&client=ms-android-samsung-gj-rev1&prmd=vinx&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjx-OP39tT1AhUKilwKHZ80AzIQ_AUoAnoECAIQAg&biw=360&bih=647&dpr=2#imgrc=o-496j_D4kFChM

I've been trying to remember the name of that for years lol. I remember being really scared of it lol.

Beautiful3 · 28/01/2022 17:46

No I wouldn't.

Rodion · 28/01/2022 17:57

Personally, no. Although I would if I was an older adult with no children living in the house. I'm looking currently and don't want to be close by to one. As a pp said, the risk of cancer is not as clear cut as with ionising radiation, but with small growing bodies I just wouldn't want to risk it when there are other places to live that I can't afford!. The noise can be surprisingly loud too.

pompomseverywhere · 28/01/2022 19:02

Resale would not be an issue at all as it's a 50% equity home ownership scheme so very popular with a huge list of people applying for it.

I'd not thought of the noise. I was thinking more of the health concerns

OP posts:
lightnesspixie · 28/01/2022 19:05

No

Maflingo · 28/01/2022 19:08

We lived near one for a couple of years and I hadn’t even thought about it until my DH got leukaemia. No evidence of a link but didn’t stop me worrying as I’d just had a baby too. We moved within 6 months!

Suzi888 · 28/01/2022 19:12

No, as I’d always wonder …what if

FurierTransform · 28/01/2022 19:18

It wouldn't put me off for any health reasons- there's clearly no correlation there. But I would worry about future resale, buzzing, and having to look at a pylon.

Lordamighty · 28/01/2022 19:19

No I wouldn’t.
