Stoke-on-Trent

Hello all!

I'm back at it again, looking at possible spots to start looking in.

I'm investigating Stoke-on-Trent; does anyone have any first hand experience of the area? Any spots to avoid? Diverse (we are a black family)? Safe?

Here is what I've found:

I live in Newcastle Under Lyme. In one of the areas already mentioned.

How about this:

I live near a public park popular with children, dog walkers etc. I live one mile away from the Post Office and other shops.

I live half a mile away from three hairdressers on the same parade/high street (yes really) a garage, two corner shops, a really good Chinese takeaway, a boutique clothes shop, a dental implant centre and a shop that just sells doors.

I live quarter of a mile away from a primary school.

I live two miles away from Wolstanton Retail Park which has a huge Marks and Spencer, Matalan, ASDA, B&M and Dunelm.

We purchased our house just over a year ago. Much better value than Surrey where we used to be, albeit eleven years ago.

I don't disagree with some of the comments here but there are lots of nice areas to live in Stoke-on-Trent. Whilst it's not close to the city centre, the area around the second property you originally posted (James Street) is OK, sort of between Stoke, Penkhull and Oakhill. I don't think Newcastle is any better to be honest, it used to be lovely but Newcastle town centre is now hugely run-down.

Glowtastic · 25/01/2022 22:42

@Somanyquestions1984

Not convinced about this thread OP posting links for completely wrong area and ignoring comments on apparent racism in SonT which I just can’t imagine ignoring if I was planning on moving there.
I do think if you have the whole country to choose from it's a very weird choice.
GrannytoaUnicorn · 25/01/2022 23:14

It's an absolute sh#thole! Don't do it

Aubrey1981 · 25/01/2022 23:23

I’m from Endon in S-O-T. It’s lovely and still cheaper than a lot of areas in the country. Stoke on Trent in general is very rough and lots of poverty. I wouldn’t advise anyone moving there

Aubrey1981 · 25/01/2022 23:26

There is also open racism as I remember from being there with mixed race friends.

BaldBrown · 26/01/2022 00:53

Hello, I'm not ignoring comments on racism but once it has been mentioned what else do I need to add? It's just great to have varying views. As you can see some people have kindly pointed me to nicer spots nearby.

I'm not choosing this area. It's a place to look at and ask questions about. I have lived in London my entire life and would like to change that and see what else it out there.

Liverpool is a good option as someone up thread mentioned. I'd pick it a million times over Stoke.

Sammilouwho · 26/01/2022 03:39

I'm from Stoke-on-Trent, closer to the Cheshire border. Now live in West Yorkshire.
I personally would love at areas surrounding it, somebody higher up mentioned Congleton/Alsager and they are nice, I'd also add Biddulph into that list too, then you've got areas like Macclesfield which are nice (in part, like anywhere there are rough parts of Macc)
All of the above areas have nice access to places for bike riding and walking too, and super easy access to bigger cities like Manchester/London.

BaldBrown · 26/01/2022 04:37

I've just been looking at Liverpool (thanks to those who mentioned it). Is there anywhere in particular you'd suggest?

Perhaps I'll start a separate thread? Smile

I've only been a few times to visit. The centre is fantastic, tons to do and diverse. The Sefton Park area is gorgeous. You're unlikely to afford more than an apartment in the immediate vicinity, but maybe a house a short walk away?
SweetPotatoDumpling · 26/01/2022 07:07

I used to live in Alsager which is nice.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 26/01/2022 07:25

I'm just over the border on the Cheshire side. Grew up in the Staffordshire moorlands area then moved back to be nearer to family after having DC.
Like everyone says there are some lovely bits and some not so nice bits. I'd avoid most bits of actual Stoke on Trent but consider Stone, Newcastle, Macclesfield, Congleton, Alsager. Sandbach and Holmes Chapel are nice but probably more expensive.

As a white family I can't really comment on racism but I think it's a place where a lot of people don't move away so are a bit surprised by anyone not local if that makes sense. DH is from a different UK country and even that can be a bit of a novelty!

The thing I like about living here is there is so much to do locally but it's also really easy to be in other places in no more than a couple of hours - Welsh coast, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Peak District. I think if you're HE there'd be loads to explore. Great museums in Stoke too.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 26/01/2022 07:36

I forgot to say Keele and around too. Don't know it so well but it's a lovely area and have friends who like it there. Being by the Uni makes it more diverse and less unusual to have people moving there.

Leek is nice too and Biddulph but I always think they are a bit out on their own and insular.

romatheroamer · 26/01/2022 07:38

Surprised nobody has mentioned Leek which is quite a thriving market town, developing a bit of an arty scene and has quite large properties at very reasonable prices and lovely countryside. Though at present the area is very Leave and monocultural.
However the Potteries themselves I must say is an odd area to choose when you have the whole country to look at.

Mamamwmwma · 26/01/2022 08:03

In all honesty I would probably advise avoiding Stoke. I hope it has its day again but it’s not the best place to live. As others have already said, sadly I think the people are quite insular and think it would be too much of a shock for you.
If you are looking at Liverpool, try somewhere like Formby. It’s next to the beach, the countryside is lovely and the schools are great. Lots of new houses are being built there at the moment so it’s a good time to look as newcomers as the neighbours will all be new.
I would also check out Halifax. I think it ticks a lot of boxes for you.

This is in a beautiful area on the edge of a National Trust forest and beach, and minutes from an excellent school.

Larrissaa · 18/04/2022 16:56

Not sure if you have made your decision. I was in a similar situation 4 years ago as a black family with 2 young children moving to Stoke and all the comments of racism. I moved from a very diverse and multi cultural city. I will give my honest opinion. We moved to the outskirts of Newcastle-under-Lyme and one of very few black families in the area. Initially we had alot of stares as it was upmarket and for once in my 30 years in the UK I felt I was different and black. My daughter experienced racism in her first school and we moved her to a very lovely school. However, 4 years on we love it. Our neighbours are lovely people and my kids love their school. I guess Initially the locals felt a bit reluctant as they were not used to having blacks amongst them. But now we have made genuine friends and we are well settled. We love our home its massive considering what we paid for it, i have met more genuine people than I met in London or Leicester. There is a community feel, and in terms of meeting other black families we have more friends now than we had in London. So don't be discouraged by the comments. You get alot more for your money and when you eventually settle down you will love it. Also, Stoke-on-Trent is diverse with a good mix of BAME. Newcastle-under-Lyme has a lot of black and Asian professionals mainly Dr's and nurse. I will suggest trentham in stoke on trent and some nice areas in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Avoid stoke in general like a plague.

mistymoo555 · 13/09/2022 22:08

Areas surrounding the centre are very nice and you can still nip in to town if you need to, have a look in to Stone. I was brought up in Hanley, I lived right in the centre, it is very multicultural and more so now, I went to one of the regarded roughest schools in the area and there was honestly not much issues at all with regards to racism whatsoever, kids tend to get along just fine, the racism I saw was from school leavers but it wasn't that bad. I then lived on the birches head estate for some time, lovely community, local drs, chemist and shop and a walk to town of iou want to go there but it's very close to town and the high school isn't rated very well, if education is important as lovely as the area is don't move there. Look at Stone, its not got huge public parks and more shops and places to eat out as Hanley but your 20 min drive to Hanley if you need it, stone has many well rated schools, school clubs and lots of groups for kids, nice places to eat out and a busy nightlife and close to everywhere, m6 acces in 10 mins, very friendly people!! Eccleshall, endon, Newcastle under Lyme (westlands) x x

mistymoo555 · 13/09/2022 22:14

Stone also has a train station in walking distance from most parts of Stone, there is I think a new theatre being developed, food festival, farmers markets. You can cycle the canal with your family in to town and in to barlaston plume of feathers pub, there are many nice pubs close by that are safe and friendly, it doesn't have a cinema but it's a trip out to cineworld complex at the hive in hanley, you can park in the multi story and walk in to the complex. Hanley is sadly in decline but it does have a few good shops worth wondering around to if you don't want to venture further, to maxx, Starbucks, kfc, primark, Schuh etc, msg me if you want more in depth info on any part of stoke or surrounding areas I know the areas very well x

Comefromaway · 13/09/2022 22:16

I used to live on the Birches Head estate too & went to Birches Head High School!

mistymoo555 · 13/09/2022 22:24

@Comefromaway awww small world! I lived in Northwood originally, it was for a time so lovely but became worse over the yrs, I then moved to the birches head estate which was so differnt! Loved my time there, the younger schools are also very good but the high school isn't currently rated so good but I believe the old
Holden lane is very good now. I loved my school yrs at birches head high but I learned abs nothing! The classes were too disruptive, not so much bullying or terrible behaviour at all, mostly talking, teachers didn't whip us in to shape well enough
