Stoke-on-Trent

Hello all!

I'm back at it again, looking at possible spots to start looking in.

I'm investigating Stoke-on-Trent; does anyone have any first hand experience of the area? Any spots to avoid? Diverse (we are a black family)? Safe?

Here is what I've found:

Baddley green, milton, endon, stockon brook, light oaks ,bagnall all lovely. Trentham is nice too.

Glowtastic · 25/01/2022 18:12

Don't be fooled by the blurb in the second house description about "being near to stoke city centre", it means stoke upon Trent the town which is a dump with nothing there except for the station.

Hanley is the actual centre, the shops used to be ok but I've heard it's gone down hill a bit in recent years. Most of my friends who have teenage DC who live there say the teenagers go shopping in Birmingham/Manchester/Liverpool rather than Hanley. All very easy to reach on the train.

Cheekypeach · 25/01/2022 18:17

I’ve been to stoke a few times & had a poor first impression. The first time I went I was followed & verbally abused in a supermarket by 2 yobby looking men Hmm it does seem to be quite a depressing and bleak city with 70s buildings and a general vibe of deprivation. We can’t pretend to like everywhere just to avoid offending people.

whymewhyme · 25/01/2022 18:21

Forgot to mention barlaston is nice not far from trentham and stone

Somanyquestions1984 · 25/01/2022 18:32

Can you stretch to Birmingham?
I lived that side for 8 years and honestly wouldn’t recommend Stoke. I’m black but didn’t experience any racism and I worked at an large university hospital. I just felt like the area was a bit bleak though I heard some of the Staffordshire villages like Stone and Leek can be beautiful. I would honestly see if you could stretch to Brum which is vibrant, multicultural, plenty to do, good railway and road links to literally everywhere in the UK and about to host the commonwealth games.

Northfield isn’t a bad area

We're a HE family just outside of Newcastle under Lyme

I can't comment on racism generally, as I've not encountered it either directly or indirectly (white family), but there is a Caribbean community within the city, as well as more diverse pockets in places. It is a fairly white working class city, however. The BNP and Brexit of a few years back - and Labour councillors losing to Tories since - would potentially worry me in your position.

Of the six towns, I'd generally avoid Burslem, Stoke, Fenton and Tunstall, as they're all pretty dead and don't get much investment in them. Hanley has more going for it, but has areas of real deprivation. Longton is similar, but has more facility and a railway station - but is further out from Hanley. Near to the hospital (Hartshill) and Staffs Uni (Shelton) are more diverse generally. Likewise, near to Keele Uni, though Keele village itself isn't especially big.

Birches Head is relatively nice, in my experience. Trentham, as already mentioned (though I believe it's technically Not Stoke). I love Newcastle, though it suffers from being in the shadow of SoT a little.

For the HE aspect, there is a lovely community here, though you may be aware that Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire both have local authorities that like to overstep beyond their remit. There is currently a decent drama group that meets in Biddulph, that could be of interest to your daughter. Plenty of social groups restarting now restrictions are easing - it's not the most active HE community in the country, but there is a fair bit on regularly, and over the border in Cheshire, too.

I would probably be tempted to stay in the city for a week or two to get a feel for it, if you can. Explore different areas, and so on. Most HE groups I'm aware of would be happy to have you even if you were just there that week, which would also introduce you to that community a bit, etc.

BaldBrown · 25/01/2022 21:28

So much great information! Thank you all.

Can I ask which parts of Newcastle would he worth looking at? If there is an area that we really like, we plan to stay for a week or two, yes!

I was just taking a quick look at found this

That property is for Newcastle upon Tyne, you need to be looking at Under Lyme

OldWivesTale · 25/01/2022 21:43

I'm originally from Stoke. I wouldn't choose to live there now. It's cheap for a reason; it's run down and not very diverse; it's insular - very high proportion of Brexit voters. I don't know what your budget is but I would be looking for somewhere that had more diversity or more of a home schooling community.

Comefromaway · 25/01/2022 21:44

There’s a home Ed group in Biddulph but it’s very white here.

Stoke on Trent is very diverse in some areas but it’s more of a Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian Community in areas like Shelton, Tunstall & Longton.

There is a lot of division, partly perhaps because those communities tend to keep to themselves and everything is centred around their religion. I have unfortunately heard a lot of racism. I work with quite a few racists.

For a black family I’d recommend looking at what I call Hospital areas. We have always had a lot of drs and nurses from abroad and they stayed and brought up families etc. places like Hartshill, Keele, Madeley & Clayton seemed popular. (Technically in Newcastle under Lyme)

My children used to go to a school near to the hospital and that was a very diverse school. They were quite old and aghast when they even realised that racism existed as to them, everyone was the same. But that’s not really typical of many parts of the area.

LaLaLouella · 25/01/2022 21:45

Most people choose to move out of Stoke on Trent, not into it!

I would keep looking at other areas - it's a run down and pretty depressing place.

Macncheesy - the drama group is run by the lady who tutored my Ds and managed to get him through gcse English!

That's not in Newcastle under Lyme - it's Newcastle upon Tyne which is in the North East- miles from Stoke.

OldWivesTale · 25/01/2022 21:50

All the houses you've linked to are Newcastle upon Tyne

LaLaLouella · 25/01/2022 21:53

How about Sandbach? Another couple of junctions up the M6 and surrounded by some nice countryside

Comefromaway · 25/01/2022 21:54

Look at ST5 postcodes for Newcastle under Lyme.

I was brought up in Birches Head & had friends in Derek Drive.

There is a drama group specifically for autistic children by the way in the area.

I’ve got two autistic kids both into music & drama

Macncheesey · 25/01/2022 21:54

Those are in Newcastle upon Tyne, which I'm not placed to comment on!

May Bank is an area of Newcastle under Lyme I think tends to be nicer. I'm not sure where Keele staff and students tend to live, if not the village, which might be worth exploring. I've not really much experience of the entirety of NuL, just my (not particularly affluent, fairly insular) village and the town centre, really - I've been here less than a year, while I lived in Stoke for a good few years.

My kids used to go to a certain school that attracted the children of hospital and Keele Uni staff. Seabridge, Clayton, Hartshill & Trentham were popular areas along with further towards Cheshire.
crochetcrazy1978 · 25/01/2022 22:05

Honestly Stoke on Trent is really not great. It's my closest city and I avoid it like the plague. If you're set on that area I'd look around the outskirts.

BaldBrown · 25/01/2022 22:11

I posted those links as I was sure you said you loved Newcastle. Smile

Newcastle Under Lyme does sound promising!

You could also look towards Congleton which is on the train line to Manchester.
