Wood look tiles....living room?

Catinabox21 · 23/01/2022 23:50

We are choosing our flooring for a new build house and have decided on a wood effect tile to go downstairs. The house has underfloor heating. In our current house, we have a (real) wooden floor running throughout the whole of the ground floor which looks great. DH would like to replicate this with the wood effect tiles and have them throughout the whole ground floor of the new house.

I'm on board for the hall and kitchen diner, but I am really nervous about the idea of tiling the living room! We can get a nice big rug of course and I'm sure it would look good. But still, there's something about the idea of tiles - any sort of tiles! - in a living room that I'm struggling with. But, i do really like the tiles! Does anyone have any thoughts?

We have a big open plan kitchen/living/diner with wood look tiles. Separate living room has engineered wood. I wouldn’t have wanted tiles in the separate living room. If you want the same throughout then I’d do wood everywhere.

bumping as we are considering doing the same but unsure

Doubleraspberry · 24/01/2022 15:20

We had them put into a large kitchen extension, and then put them in the hallway, and would happily put them in our living room. They look fab, would be lovely and warm with underfloor heating, and you can soften them up with rugs as you're planning to do.

We've also got similar in the hall and into the kitchen / diner. DH would like to put them in the living room but I'm worried about our kids. 1) bumped heads, 2) broken toys on the hard floor and 3) in time, broken drinks glasses and compute consoles etc.

longtompot · 24/01/2022 15:22

Not quite the same but we had laminate in our living room and had a rug for the sofa area. I loved it as the floor was much easier to keep clean.
Are you meaning wooden tiles or ceramic ones, as if ceramic I think they might feel cold, even if they aren't with the underfloor heating.

icedancerlenny · 24/01/2022 15:28

I have them in a very large area downstairs (about 2500 sq ft in a herringbone pattern and I love them. They aren’t cold with underfloor heating at all. Mine also go outside, but I wouldn’t recommend that as they really show the dirt although look great when they are clean.

I love my tiles- hall, study, dining room, WC... wish they went into my lounge!

Similar here. We have a 2 year old and a 6 month old and they are my main cause of concern. If it were just me and DH I think I'd feel easier about it.

We are looking at getting bamboo flooring which seems a bit softer but still suitable for kitchen

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/01/2022 19:25

We have bamboo. I would be concerned about the coldness of tiles

Pottytraining37473 · 25/01/2022 00:11

We are considering this and wondering if it would make the room feel colder if we did not have underfloor heating and just central heating

Rebuildingconfidence · 25/01/2022 06:18

We are tiling our living room. The wood effect tiles look amazing, so I say go for it.

Three years ago we tiled the whole downstairs in wood look tiles. It's one of the best things we did. I absolutely love them in our living room.

Hello can you recommend any brands please ?
Kenworthington · 25/03/2022 19:01

Have a look at mandarin stone. Some lovely ones, b good quality and look very realistic

Nothappyatwork · 25/03/2022 20:19

Thank you

minniep · 26/03/2022 17:33

@Nothappyatwork no idea about brands to be honest. We got the tiler first as good ones are like gold dust around here and we just looked at ones he recommended

BeryltheMenaceneePeril · 27/03/2022 07:14

Be careful using rugs with UFH, I think you need to do a bit of research and choose rugs with the correct tog value. I am in a similar situation. Living in a bungalow, just had UFH installed throughout. Considering tiled floors for the bedrooms but think a tiled lounge floor might not be for me.

amyboo · 27/03/2022 08:38

We just retiled our whole downstairs plus new extension in wood effect tiles and we don't have underfloor heating. It looks amazing... Very pleased with it

Nothappyatwork · 27/03/2022 09:15

@amyboo that looks absolutely fantastic I’ve got to ask though is it not cold under foot ?
Are used to live abroad in the whole house was tiled throughout and that is my one memory it’s just how flipping cold it was even on a hot summers day

amyboo · 27/03/2022 10:19

Nah, not really. I wear sheepskin slippers all year round but I'd do that even if we had carpet as I get cold hands and feet... The kids go round in socks year round! It's not heated underneath, but it is insulated, as we have a basement under a large part of the lounge which helps keep it warmer... Where I live (Belgium) many house are tiled downstairs. It's so practical - with 3 kids and pets I wouldn't have anything else!

Nothappyatwork · 27/03/2022 12:12

That definitely makes sense where I was in Australia people are just barefoot all the time, which actually gets your floors dirtier but then you’ve got the hazard of kids sliding around in socks. To be honest I think my son and i will just walk around barefoot and get used to it

TatianaBis · 27/03/2022 15:22

Most of our ground floor is tiled with uf heating - hall, kitchen, dining room, family room etc, but the drawing room is carpeted. Personally I wouldn’t want tiles in the drawing room. I find rugs a major pia.
