Neff Slide and Hide Ovens

We are doing our kitchen up in a month or so and I’m at the appliance buying stage. Whilst I take a moment to have a break from how crap integrated freezers are I’ve been looking at ovens.

I am seduced by the gimmick of the slide and hides, but there are so many different models I don’t know where to start.

I’ve seen some reviews saying they’re really, really hard to fit and that the instructions are useless, and then others saying they love them.

I’ve looked back on last threads and seen some people say they’ve gone for a higher and lower end model together.

We will be getting two full size single ovens. Would be interested to know if people rate them as ovens and if any particular model has issues/is brilliant.

Glad to hear it’s not just me @MazzleDazzle.
It’s a bit of a pain, tbh.

I recently did a kitchen refurb. I have 2 ovens, side by side, and I absolutely did not want hide & slide because where would I put the pan when I'm tossing my spuds in the goose fat? Sometimes, you just need that door to stay put while you do cooking things
(I have mobility problems so not always able to carry the pan/tray over to the worktop to do what needs to be done)

How do you all find cleaning the slide doors? I have read reviews with people trying to clean the glass and having to take the door off and struggle to get it back on??
I was told by the man who came to clean mine* that it’s really easy to break the hinges on them when taking the door off. And the only solution if this happens is to buy a new door. He just cleaned it without removing door.

Like everyone else I luffs mine! Wish I had the self cleaning version though (hence regular visits from oven cleaning man)

@BlissfullyIgnorant you get one with a telescopic rail shelf which you can pull out and it stays put without tilting or sliding anywhere allowing you to toss spuds in goose fat really easily and safely.

BlissfullyIgnorant · 20/01/2022 22:19

@BonnyandPoppy both my ovens have sliding shelves. They're not Neff, though. Sliding the shelf out and tossing with the door underneath and not slid and hidden helps stop fatty splashes hitting the floor making it slippery Smile

Yup, this is absolutely the only problem we've had with ours - we followed the instructions to take the door off to clean between the panes and somehow had one of the screws in the hinge in the wrong position, and the hinge broke. We didn't need to buy a new door but we did have to get a Neff technician in to repair the part, which wasn't cheap. We've been too scared to attempt it since then and we now have several horrible drips between the glass. We also have a drip between the panes of the microwave combo, and I have no idea if that can be cleaned at all. Apart from that we love it, and having the second oven as a combo is a brilliant use of space.

Tried to order two ovens from AO today and they’re both out of stock! Had them in my basket whilst deliberating and then gone! Hopefully they will be back in soon (can get a family member discount hence trying to buy from there!)

You’ve got me thinking now

I looked and just wasn’t feeling it so went for a side hinged gaggenhau

Policyschmolicy · 22/01/2022 08:22

I’ve not had problems with lights on mine or the door becoming too caked on to see through. I had my first installed in 2015, then moved house in 2019 and had the same in this house.

Both have self cleaning functions (which I used last night following a disaster with a Waitrose cake recipe that was useless and ended up with a pool of brown butter in the drip tray). It reminded me how much I like the ovens!

I do agree that taking the door off can be really fiddly, I did it a couple of times at our old house but then had to put the sliding mechanism back together and lost my nerve after that. It’s one of those jobs which is probably ok if you do it all the time but quite fiddly and technical.

I haven't RTFT so someone may have mentioned this but I think telescopic rails are infinitely more useful (my mum has hide and slide, I have telescopic).

So so good, we do a lot of roasts, meat etc so being able to baste the joint, turn tatties or use the thermapen etc without ever having to lift the pan from the oven is amazing.

A lot of big brand ovens say telescopic rails but then only have 1 so keep an eye out for that.

(And with you on integrated fridge/freezers - we just put in the biggest capacity one I could find and its bloody tiny. Would be lost without the 'drinks' fridge in the utility.)

SunnyUpNorth · 22/01/2022 08:33

@Muststopeating yes I did see the telescopic shelves but forgot to check for those in the models I was going for. I’ll check again!

The freezer thing is ridiculous. We have an American style fridge freezer which I hate, so definitely want a separate fridge and freezer. However we will really miss the ice dispenser. I can only find a couple of models of freezer that have an integrated ice maker inside but they’re almost £2k!! Ridiculous. Surely if they have the technology to have ice makers and you can get them in relatively cheap American style fridge freezers why can’t they stick one inside a normal freezer. Drives me mad! Plus it seems most fridges and freezers are out of stock anyway. Very annoying!

So the slide and hide is most useful if your oven is in a high traffic area or eg opposite an island. Ours is (no other option as too many windows/doors in this room) and a standard door would be really awkward. I do have a telescopic rail though which really helps.

Regarding American fridges - we have the Fisher and Paykel french door version where the freezer is at the bottom. I really love this. It’s ample freezer space for us, but we are not massive ‘deep freeze’ people - I find that freezer food is either staples that have a quick turnover, batch cooked dinners that need to be consumed on a reasonably short timescale, or items that go in and don’t come out for the next 5 years. And believe me, we have plenty of those in our freezer, don’t need room for any more!!

We are going for two N70 ovens and two combis. My MIL had them and they are fab ovens.
