Smart meter shows £5 electricity used by 6.30am?

I’m really stressed since having it fitted out bills have gone through the roof. I checked at 6.20am and it was already showing £4.43 used! Gone up .66p in an hour and display showed between 0.03 and 0.09p per hour in that time. What is going on?

How much lecky is used by posting every 90 seconds on Mumsnet? Grin

Only joking @ENoeuf, I'd be worried too, I hope they can solve it for you.

JugglingJanuary · 18/01/2022 09:58

@ENoeuf

I don’t think they open till 9 and they already have a - we are so busy post on the app. I can’t afford this though. £270 so far this month apparently.
Check that your per kw & daily standing charge have been set correctly. It won't change your bills as you're billed for useage, but it will affect how much your meter is showing it will cost.
burnoutbabe · 18/01/2022 10:05

my smart meter was only handy for seeing the hour by hour usage so you knew that stickinh oven on made it shoot up (and dishwasher/ washing machine abit) and hot water was main culprit

But when they (bulb) installed my smart meter they managed to NOT connect the night economy 7 circuit! so had to be removed after a month. (ie no power was even being sent to the hot water or elec during night hours)

TottiePlantagenet · 18/01/2022 10:14

So sorry you're having al this trouble OP. This is of smart meter shenanigans is what puts me off from having one installed.

I also thought once you have a smart meter, you can't go back? Can't get rid of it?

I'm dreading the price rises, it's going to be food or heating for many people :(

emmathedilemma · 18/01/2022 10:16

"background" usage wouldn't account for that much. Mine is usually on about 38p when I get up in the morning. Yesterday I was out all day so nothing other than background usage and it was on about 65p when I got home in the evening. This morning it was on 75p when i got up as the dishwasher went on overnight. Electric shower is around 25-30p. Plugging in phone / ipad etc to charge barely affects it even when I leave them plugged in overnight.
Unless someone is slow roasting things in the oven overnight, doing 3 loads of laundry which also go through the tumble drier and putting the dishwasher on while in a very long shower I can't see how you'd ever use that amount of power in the early hours of the morning!

Bitbloweyoutthere · 18/01/2022 10:30

Mine goes over budget when the cooker, shower, microwave, kettle, washing machine goes on. Ours does gas too, so that bumps it up.

I keep telling myself that it will equal itself out in spring, when we'll use less.

@PurpleCarpets 😂 I dread to think! Probably £1 a post

Reset the monitor and it says we’ve spent £45.19 by day 3 of the billing period. And they’ve randomly refunded my electricity bill to my account so I am expecting that to be recalled again. No one there so have emailed.

I found it really stressful watching the £ tick up every time I boiled the kettle etc. Glad we don't have the device in current house.

LiG123 · 18/01/2022 20:01

@ENoeuf is this octopus energy? I had this they refunded then took even more 😫

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 20:18

@LiG123 yes - I spoke to them this morning, bill was added to the balance on 15th taking it to (180) and then today I noticed my balance was (100). I literally cannot understand how they get such great reviews. The reset has done nothing but I absolutely cannot be using almost £50 in electricity in three days.

LiG123 · 18/01/2022 20:29

@ENoeuf they've really messed us around but we are in debt in the account from it all so are kind of stuck!!!

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 20:34

Oh interesting - our tariff is up in May so I’m going to try to escape and pay off any debt.

And this is why I am never getting a smart meter.

ENoeuf · 19/01/2022 06:26

^^ I am going to try to get a written response that it’s not correct and then ask if I can bin the monitor. The stress isn’t worth it. So much time wasted.

YourenutsmiLord · 19/01/2022 06:37

Kettles and electric showers are the things I would think.
Also there will be an electric pump circulating the water to radiators.

Wotsitsits · 19/01/2022 06:42

Our monitor has never worked. No one seems to care.

Read the actual meter at the same time each day. Write it down. That's what you'll be charged for.

ENoeuf · 19/01/2022 06:59

Thank you - I’ll do that and take photos. I just find it incredibly stressful and it’s making life unpleasant the last couple of days - unplugged the Alexas, no radio, stressed about people cooking. They said it was not accurate but it just sits there scaring me.

daisychainsandrainbows · 19/01/2022 07:00

We had a smart meter installed and our bills shot through the roof. Apparently that's not possible. It broke and we went back to reading the meter and the bills went back to normal. I'd never have one again.

ENoeuf · 19/01/2022 07:02

Sort of reassuring it’s not just me. I wish I’d never agreed as I thought it would be helpful.

3WildOnes · 19/01/2022 07:41

There is no way you have gone from using £2.70ish to £16ish of electricity a day which is what it is saying you are?! Prices have increased by about 50% so £4.05ish a day would be understandable.

ENoeuf · 19/01/2022 08:03

Well yesterday they told me the amount showing on the monitor of £x for three days in the new billing period was nowhere near what they saw their end. They reset the monitor their end and I had to reset it - back to showing accurate gas but shocking electricity usage. So far today (oven 20 mins, two kettle boiled for tea, one coffee, two showers) and it’s at £5.52 and 0.00kWh for electricity. Apparently yesterday in full was £16.17 all day. I don’t think that’s possible at all. We are a large family but there’s no exciting stuff like underfloor heating or car charging going on.

Im waiting for a reply to tell me what they see their end and why they re credited the £80 they charged for December.

OP posts:
redandwhite1 · 19/01/2022 08:11

Yeah that's high!

Mine is showing as 0.66p for electric and 0.97p combined and the heating came on about 5am and only just gone off

ENoeuf · 19/01/2022 08:16

Thank you - friend has said they use £5-6 a day so even as a slightly bigger family I can’t see it being £10 more esp with kids at school / work. It’s just so stressful to look at.

3WildOnes · 19/01/2022 09:57

There is definitely a fault on your smart meter. Can you just unplug it and try to forget about it? Hopefully when your bill comes it will be normal but if not then chase it up then.
