Smart meter shows £5 electricity used by 6.30am?

I’m really stressed since having it fitted out bills have gone through the roof. I checked at 6.20am and it was already showing £4.43 used! Gone up .66p in an hour and display showed between 0.03 and 0.09p per hour in that time. What is going on?

What has your son been doing though the night and he 1.33 per hour for kettle x2 showers and hair dryer sounds about right its the £4 odd before that

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/01/2022 08:34

I’d also agree it could be related to the standing charge. I wouldn’t read too much into the exact reading each day. Mine does that because it shows an average and so if you click through the settings it will average the amount used and show it as an identical amount per day.

burnoutbabe · 18/01/2022 08:37

Can you go and look at the actual meter and read the readings now and tomorrow sans time.

Then you can work out the usage and Cost. The elec company works off the unit readings not the cost on the smart meter.

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 08:38

Ah ok that’s helpful. I thought the standing charge was daily not hourly? How does it work?
Son comes in at 2 makes a smoothie and goes to bed (works nights, gets up about 1pm)

But going up 11p in 10 minutes? While nothing happened.?

I think it’s them not you. I’m not convinced how smart meters actually are.

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 08:44

Grasping at straws but is it possible the display is wrong? Last electric bill 16.12-16.01 was £80 Incl vat and standing charge.

So the new billing period is two days’ old? What’s it saying total for those two days?

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 08:54

£38.45 ??

I’m really feeling something is wrong here. Even adding up the annual costs for dishwashers, tumble dryers, ovens, kettles (I did this yesterday) it should be about £700 for a five bed house (we are four bed) according to eon and one another.

My monthly billing cut off is the 13th/14th, so we are only a couple of days into my new billing month and my daily average (dual fuel) has jumped from approx £5.70 a day in Dec/Jan to a running average of approx £8.60 a day this week. See attached. Probably attributable to the cold snap. Are you having a cold snap to mess up the picture further?

@ENoeuf

£38.45 ??
WOW.

That is a huge jump.

Well at least we’ve entertained you with extraneous theories until exactly 9am and you can now ring them. Grin

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:05

😂 thank you - I wouldn’t say the last two days have been more expensive than 16.12 - 19.12 - kids were at home then!

Bubblesandsqueak1 · 18/01/2022 09:08

I have a 2 bed and minimum spend is 4.20 a day so about 1500 a year you have double the size house so I would expect around double that amount but not £16 a day I would ring your electric company up and get them to check asap

johnd2 · 18/01/2022 09:09

If you have a fuse box with a big switch, you can try switching it off for 10 minutes and see if it still goes up. That's what an electrician would do to rule everything else out and prove the meter faulty.
Although clearly something is wrong, either broken meter or have you noticed the smell of cannabis wafting from next door recently?..😂

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:10

Ok so am hold - questions

Minimum charge daily when added
Last bill
Current balance is it £38.45 for this period

Are you with Southern Electric OP? We have had nothing but trouble with them. They honestly caused me to nearly have a breakdown with their incompetence and charging us loads when something was clearly wrong. It took hours of phone calls and getting people out to look at stuff. We are now on an even keel in terms of what we ate paying now is correct but have a massive debt from our last place

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:14

No, but that sounds horrendous. Honestly without people on here to make suggestions I would have lost my mind this morning. It’s probably going to resolve but the stress levels are awful.
Did you get refunded the overcharging?

OP posts:
delilahbucket · 18/01/2022 09:18

Is your boiler on comfort mode? Which means it is constantly firing up, which will use electricity as well. WiFi, gadgets charging, things on standby, outside security lights coming on over night, fridge/freezer that is overfilled or on quick freeze/cool settings, all the things on standby. There's a lot of things that use a little bit of electricity all the time and those little bits do add up. If anything is old then it could be calling on the power supply more than normal.

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:26

I don’t think so, re: boiler. It’s either on or off.
So….
They are sending a reset as the actual meter reading is showing nowhere near what the smart display shows. I’m thinking of ditching it as I’d literally switched off my radio, did a service wash instead of washing machine, switching everything off that I could (unless clock / display).
So hooray and thank you for talking me down but boo to smart displays for causing so much stress.

No we had a £4500 debt. Paid off £500 straight away and chipping away at the rest £50pm. It will take us years. We moved house after the first lockdown and they wouldnt come and look at the meter during the first lockdown where it was so strict so there was nothing we could do. Weve then had nothing but trouble with the debt being transferred around different organisations, them ignoring metre readings i sent for our new house and continuing to estimate the reading, luckily I took photos so could prove that I was giving the correct reading and theirs was wrong so did eventually get that sorted. Had a smart meter installed here and had nothing but trouble with it as they couldnt read it their end so started estimating again. We renewed our tariff 2 weeks ago and this thread has prompted me to check and our app still says we need to renew so they obviously never actioned our call

SpiderinaWingMirror · 18/01/2022 09:28

Does the smart meter show the standing charge?

Thoosa · 18/01/2022 09:28

Oh good. Fingers crossed the real figures are sane. 🤞🏻

ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:29

Shock oh my god that is horrendous. I’m so sorry I can imagine facing that size bill.

OP posts:
ENoeuf · 18/01/2022 09:30

It does for gas not for electricity - I’m going to test it my end, they’ve done something their end but tbh I don’t think I want it anymore it’s been so stressful.
