Do the toilets with a hand basin on top work?

Are they a bit naff?

Saw a flat with a separate toilet and bathroom and thought if you had to eee while someone was having a bath (etc) it would be annoying but the space is tiny.....plus is the water recycled?

My in laws have this set up and the basin is tiny. Both in area, and the gap between the bottom of the basin and the tap. I struggle to get a hand under the tap without spraying water, and the basin is not deep enough to fill and wash your hands that way.

ShippingNews · 17/01/2022 01:48

They are very popular in some countries. Yes the water is recycled - when you wash your hands, that used water becomes the next toilet flush water.

KatyMac · 17/01/2022 01:53

The recycling is good, the small basin in bad

Hmm have to have a think maybe we can fit a bigger one? Or somehow get pipes in to a wall basin?

I have to say that this would massively put me off a property if you are going to sell at any point, sorry

Ozanj · 17/01/2022 02:19

I wanted something similar to this one

www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/arezzo-1000-matt-blue-semi-recessed-round-combination-vanity-unit-brushed-brass-flush-and-handles?campaign=googlebase&PS2PVV1=19331&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-JnKhty39QIVEoFQBh0vgwz_EAQYAiABEgLl3PD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

But I need a full size basin right now as I wash my toddler in it. When that stops I might change it

KatyMac · 17/01/2022 02:25

More so than not having a wash basin in the loo? Like it is currently?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 17/01/2022 02:26

That's nice @Ozanj but it wouldn't fit

There was one in an Airbnb I stayed in recently, there was plenty of room to get hands under so perhaps there are different styles around.

I don't understand why someone would be put off buying a house because of it? It's not compulsory to use, you could always go to the sink in another room if you wanted to. Also fairly cheap and straightforward to replace with a regular cistern.

Giggorata · 17/01/2022 03:34

I am delighted with mine, as the loo is separate from the bathroom.
It is not only useful for washing hands but also for a more cleansing wipe.
Far from being put off by one, I would find it an asset, so long as it isn't one of those plastic ones that sits uneasily on top of the cistern. Mine is porcelain and an integral part of the design.

KatyMac · 17/01/2022 10:22

Thanks guys, glad it's not a completely pants idea

We have a separate toilet and bathroom. When we moved in there wasn't a sink in the toilet room. The door opened inwards and the loo is straight ahead. We rehung the door so it opens outwards and were able to get a small basin in on the right hand side as you look at the loo. Does the job perfectly! Might that be an option?

minipie · 17/01/2022 10:47

Are any of the walls of the loo stud walls? If so then you can save space by opening up in between the studs (creating an alcove) and recessing a small basin into that alcove.

I wouldn’t be a fan of the all in one sink/loo.

bkyyy · 17/01/2022 10:55

My friend overseas had one and it was great

KatyMac · 17/01/2022 10:56

I think the walls are poured concrete

Beamur · 17/01/2022 10:57

My neighbour has one and it's a really efficient use of a small space. Ideal if you have a separate toilet without a sink.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 17/01/2022 10:58

They are awkward to get to because you have to bend around the toilet bowl, but sometimes they are the best solution in a tiny space.

minipie · 17/01/2022 11:01

Hmm do you have kids? I am wondering if kids would be able to reach this kind of basin. They would end up climbing onto the loo to reach.

KatyMac · 17/01/2022 11:56

I dont but Id guess they would use the same step stool they'd use for the loo

SmallestInTheClass · 17/01/2022 12:02

I think so long as it’s not your only basin, it’s fine. I would want a full size one for washing and DH for shaving, but in a downstairs loo or a separate toilet then it would be okay.

minipie · 17/01/2022 12:06

Honestly I think I’d rather just use the one in the bathroom, or at a pinch the kitchen sink (if someone is in the bath say).

scooterbear · 17/01/2022 12:18

We have one-it's fine. But in the 'spare' bathroom not the main one do doesn't get used lots.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 17/01/2022 12:36

We have one. Does the job. Our loo is separate and a tiny room, so much better than needing to use separate bathroom for handwashing, especially when someone is already in there

thenewduchessoflapland · 17/01/2022 12:56

Ive heard your not supposed to use any soap etc with them as the water goes into the cistern.

I couldn't wash my hands after going to the loo without soap.
