Please I am considering hob an island now, what would you advise in terms of position on an island, sink position in the run, where would I put dishwasher in this case?

I have a similar layout. Definitely hob on island. Sink next to dishwasher snd I would put open shelving above the sink.

Ratsindahouse · 07/01/2022 06:29

Posted too soon. I would put sink where hob is on the plan and get rid of all the upper cabinets in Favour of open shelving/plate rack etc for dishes. Move double oven to the left and have a big larder cupboard to the right of it. Hob should probably be central with chopping/prep space either side, opposite the bar stools. 3 stools if not too cluttered. Hope this helps.

We have hob on the island. I really like it. Lots of prep space round it. Think about the fan though. We’ve got a big skylight above the hob so went for a venting induction hob.

as it’s a downward vent it’s quite a bit noisier on full power and also needed ducting under the floor. With us that was ok as brand new extension and we could put duct in before screed went down. It also takes up a bit of space in the island.

Wish we’d put in a 300mm larder pullout in the island for salt, pepper oil etc with easy access for when cooking.

Our sink is just behind which is handy, with bin next to it and dishwasher next to that.

A bin on the island in a pull out would be nice , but ours next to dishwasher works well.

We have a wine fridge in the island which is nice.

I wouldn’t have open shelving unless you really like cleaning, dust gatherers….

Not necessarily. I’ve got it but not completely open, more like the photo attached. More like a big cupboard but without doors as ur has a frame. I just think if you are moving the hob to the island you will be left with a long run of cupboards as the extractor would not be breaking it up.

Don't have dishwasher in a corner, it's harder if you only access from one side, and it's a bit tight with the door against the adjacent cupboards.

itspartytime · 07/01/2022 13:19

Don't sit people behind a hob as they will get burned /splashed .

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 07/01/2022 16:08

Put the hob on the island, with the sink directly behind. Then have the dishwasher next to the sink, but now it is offset from the hob, so can still be accessed while you're cooking if you need to.

Don't put it in the corner, it will be really hard to empty into the cupboards as they'll be blocked/impeded by the door.

ladyinthecampervan · 07/01/2022 16:21

Make sure there's plenty of space around your hob - particularly at the back. "Conventional" kitchens have a splashback behind the hob to stop the grease splatters going up the wall. With an island hob, you risk getting the splatters all over the floor which is a nightmare for slips (and cleaning)

pasok1000 · 07/01/2022 20:05

my island is 180 cm so if hob 60 cm, then on each side 60 cm chopping space... is it ok?
Ratsindahouse, when you said: "Move double oven to the left and have a big larder cupboard to the right of it". could I put double larder cupboard ( 60+60) to the left of the oven? please let m know why you thought putting on theright would be better please?

Also, where do you keep appliances please?

I have a much bigger island with the hob on it. You really don’t get splashes anywhere much! Mine is 1200 deep so plenty of room. You definitely need the sink and DW on the wall behind the hob. That makes them handy!

I cannot see how much dining space you have. I would make the island longer and include dining space at the end of the island. Not the conventional breakfast bar - a lower table with chairs. This means you can have a longer island as you won’t need room for the chairs you are showing. I would reconfigure this area so you get more on the island. At one end of mine I have a veg prep sink which is invaluable. There are built in waste bins and pan storage. The other side of the island is for appliance storage and bbq and picnic plates etc!

You just need a bit more of an island to jabs it all work.

pasok1000 · 07/01/2022 22:39

my island 120 deep and 180 long. As my kitchen is 3.20 by 3.20, I thought to keep island within that square area...iyswim....there is no much space to prolong, as therewould be 2.5m of depth to fin it dining table and chairs...

Bear in mind that with the oven on the left, there'll be worktop next to it, which is handy for popping on hot things straight from the oven. If you move the oven all the way to the right, your nearest worktop surface will be the island behind you, which is probably less safe when you're taking out hot pots/trays, as it's further away and potentially in the path of the human traffic from the door.

pasok1000 · 08/01/2022 05:35

I have 2 follow up questions - on this picture ( form the website I found)
q.1 is it practical 2 larder units for 30 cm ( on both sides) or 1 unit 60?
q.2 would the hot things form ovn be up on the island - is it practical?

I don’t use the worktop next to my ovens for hot dishes. I tend to use the island as it’s close. Lots of people have ovens in a bank of tall cupboards. I have my larder cupboard at the end of a run which has the sink and dishwasher in it. It’s the end unit but has drawers below the worktop.

I think you need a better kitchen designer to help you.

WWDD · 08/01/2022 08:17

I would definitely have the ovens to the left then the larder units together.

Fuuuuuckit · 08/01/2022 08:34

I have almost exactly the same layout as you op.

My hob is on the island, I have a trivet to put stuff on straight from the oven, or straight onto the pan stand bits on the hob.

My sink is where your hob currently is, with dishwasher next space closer to the oven, washing machine the other side.

30cm wide tall units are going to be very fiddly - I've got fridge, oven and another 60cm tall unit. I (well, my kitchen planner) extended the 'line' of the tall cupboards right into the corner because I can't stand the fiddliness and darkness of the space that is left when you switch to top cabinets to do the return. I have no top cabinets at all (though I do have a window) but I have a clock and some pictures on the wall - no dusty/greasy shelves just clean lines.

MarieG10 · 08/01/2022 08:38

I changed our design to remove the hob from the island. So glad I did as it is a fab social space for sitting around. We sit there whilst one is cooking at the side and the kids come in and out.

But we had the space to fit the sink and cooker at the side

noworklifebalance · 08/01/2022 08:40

For those with the hob on the island and sink directly behind on the counter run - do you have space to have someone cooking with another using the sink?

JustJam4Tea · 08/01/2022 08:53

Yes to the space issue, as long as we don’t bot bend down at once, it’s also an inventive not to put on weight.

uggmum · 08/01/2022 08:59

I'm going against the grain here. I would hate a hob on my island.

Mine is directly behind my island. It works well for me. I prep on my island.

I find that, as a family we gather around the island socially and this wouldn't work as well if the hob was there. Especially if we have people over. I'll lay a buffet out on the island.

I like the big uncluttered large expanse of shiny worktop.

Alleycat12 · 08/01/2022 09:30

We've just had a new kitchen and have gone for the hob on the island with an integrated fan. Take a look at Samsung or Bora, they are brilliant!

TizerorFizz · 08/01/2022 11:56

So you have dining table (as shown in one plan) and an island in 10 ft x 10 ft? That doesn’t make sense. What is where you show dining chairs in your first pix?

uggmum · 08/01/2022 14:04

I have my washing machine and dryer in the garage so I only need my dishwasher, fridge and cooker within the kitchen.

I have 3 stools on one side can of the island. When k am cooking people usually sit and chat to me. But I prep on the island.

The island looks smaller in the picture than it is.
