Just gas alone has cost us £170 last month

Does this seem high to you guys?
It was obviously a lot less in the warmer months but everyone I have spoken to has commented on how expensive it is for our gas and electric. We have paid around £250-270 the last 2 months (per month).

Can’t understand why it’s costing us so much.
We use a prepayment meter with bulb and live in a 3 bed end of terrace property

I'm all electric but paid £270 for a two bed cottage last month. The prices such seem insane at the moment. We can afford it by cutting back elsewhere but I really worry about people of fixed incomes like pensioners etc.

hemhem · 03/01/2022 21:00

Our bill has just gone up to about £320 a month but thats for a 4 bed detached. So I'd say your bill was high but not excessive. All energy prices are crazy right now and its painful having to pay so much, its way more than 2 years ago!

It is shocking. I’ve spoken to a few people but they don’t seem to be complaining that they’re energy prices seem high 🤔 I’m gonna have to look into ways to cut down on our energy usage I think

They are, I heard they are due to rise further too. We will all be like Michelin men with hot water bottles soon 🥶

Omg! 😳 How is it so much? Do you think it’s bulb as a company or just the rise in energy prices?

I’m wondering what will happen with this whole administration thing, not really clued up on all this but I guess it’s not wise to change suppliers either at the moment

End terraced three bed here Aswell op

Last months was £150 electric and £40 gas

That's already up by around £50 a month than a few months ago due to the winter however am about to be hit with another hike so gritting my teeth

dementedpixie · 03/01/2022 21:06

Could you change from a prepayment meter?
Think our gas bill was about £60 last month
Is your heating on a timer? Is your hot water? What's your thermostat set at?

BigotSpigot · 03/01/2022 21:08

We are pretty shocked by ours just under £400 a month at the moment, and I genuinely can't see how (smart meter, nothing on standby, timed heating not that hot and not on constant etc.). Our house is large and detached but we have never had bills like this.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 03/01/2022 21:08

3 bed semi detached here
We have a pre payment meter, the last month has cost £50 electric & 40 gas

We don't have the heating on too much as we're not here most of the day, but even so I can't see why your bills would be so much more. That's insane!
Do you have the heating on all day?? Do you switch things off at night?

Is that your actual usage or have you signed up to an expensive fixed tariff?

We don’t have a thermostat. Hot water is supply and demand. We haven’t got a timer set up for the heating.

We could, I’d be happy to do a monthly direct debit or something but unsure whether that’s possible at the moment due to the fact their in administration

This is the worst I’ve seen ours for this time of year tbh. It’s crippling

Do you mean you have a combi boiler?
And that you switch the heating on and off manually without a thermostat to limit the room temperature?

Not all day usually but we have it on quite a bit at the moment with the kids being home.

Yeah we turn stuff off at night

It's been unseasonably warm, so I can't understand some of the usage on here. Maybe wear a base layer, that will help, with a sweater. Get a timer fitted and a thermostat.

BigotSpigot · 03/01/2022 21:16

dementedpixie no that is actual usage. I am just about to switch to a tariff with a cheaper overnight rate as we now have a hybrid we need to charge. We aren't using a dryer, all LED lighting, I am switching everything off all the time and nagging everyone else to do the same... I am actually going to get a consultant in to try and work out what is going on.

TalbotAMan · 03/01/2022 21:16

We have no idea what we're paying! We were with Pure Planet. They put our Direct Debit up to £299 a month - the house is a large detached bungalow with a loft conversion. Then they went bust. Since then we've been in something of a limbo. We're still using gas and electricity and Pure Planet, now in Administration, are still taking £299 a month, but we're being transferred to Shell, which is taking a long, long time, and we haven't had a proper bill for at least 3 months now.

A reckoning is promised for January, and we're fortunate to have enough in the bank to be able to meet any unexpected bill, but it would be nice to know.

Hoochyhoo · 03/01/2022 21:17

Yes we have to use the boiler to adjust the temperature, turn it off and on etc

Are the thermostats expensive to get fitted do you know? We rent and it’s not something our landlord would be likely to do willingly.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/01/2022 21:22

Why are you on a prepayment meter? They are very expensive. You should ask your energy company if you can just have a normal meter.
December was very mild so I'm surprised that you're gas was so high.

Do you wear lots of layers when you're in the house? Both on top and under your trousers? It makes a big difference if you wear several layers.

What temperature is your thermostat on?

UnsolicitedDickPic · 03/01/2022 21:26

There's a whole thread somewhere discussing utilities across various types of property as a result of a surge in global energy prices. It's not going to get any better unless the government step in.

CornishTiger · 03/01/2022 21:27

Comparing actual costs amongst others aren’t particularly usage though.

Have a look at how many units you are using and how many you used this period last year.
