Just gas alone has cost us £170 last month

Does this seem high to you guys?
It was obviously a lot less in the warmer months but everyone I have spoken to has commented on how expensive it is for our gas and electric. We have paid around £250-270 the last 2 months (per month).

Can’t understand why it’s costing us so much.
We use a prepayment meter with bulb and live in a 3 bed end of terrace property

Gas and Electric combined, £65 per month here. 2 bed bungalow. At home all day. I don't have the heating on all the time, but I do have very efficient radiators. My thermostat is mainly set to 17 degrees. Off at night as I can't stand hot bedroom. Don't use a dryer, but I'm not stingy and if I need heat I at least know I can afford it (so far) British Gas fixed tariff.

CrabPuff · 03/01/2022 21:31

We used just over 600kwh in Dec for a 2bed semi, all electric. We have a log burner for cold days but do you know how much actual energy you use? It’s about £140 for us on the flexible tariff with So Energy.

NoWordForFluffy · 03/01/2022 21:34

@Lineofconcepcion

It's been unseasonably warm, so I can't understand some of the usage on here. Maybe wear a base layer, that will help, with a sweater. Get a timer fitted and a thermostat.
Not here it hasn't (other than the last week or so). November was really cold in these parts. As was early-mid December.
Nemorth · 03/01/2022 21:34

3 bed semi detached, 1989 build in a coastal town (exposed and windy) in the east of Scotland.

2 adults WFH, 2 DC (15 and 11) 2 Dcats.

Gas only provides our heating and hot water but shower is electric. Fairly new condensing gas boiler.

Most recent bill available to me 30 Oct - 30 Nov. We do monthly readings but pay by DD for fixed cost year round.

Our gas element of the bill was less than £25.

Our electric element was less than £90.

We're with eon on a monthly bill of £125

We have a thermostat. House rarely gets below 17° when it's cold we tend to pop on clothing before turning the thermostat up. If the extra clothing doesn't work we will bump the thermostat up to 19°, but only set for 15° overnight (and we try and sleep with windows open-locked!)

So yes, your bill seems extortionate to me. Wow.

WarmForDecember · 03/01/2022 21:35

Our new tariff is £500 for gas and electricity... we're in a Victorian semi. Not sure how to make savings really. We're in the house all day with small children/baby so do have the heating on quite a bit but not excessively, have timers to turn electrical things off, newly fitted thermostat.

We'd like to move to a bigger house this year but not if it's going to cost us a fortune just to heat...

Is that a fixed tariff they've offered you? It's advised not to fix just now and to go on the standard variable rate as its covered by the price cap

@Mollymalone123

2 bed house and we barely put heating on and we are stuck with Bulb until the administration is sorted out £328 last month !!

What?? My bill last month with bulb for a 2 bed house was £96.00.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 03/01/2022 21:37

@CornishTiger

Comparing actual costs amongst others aren’t particularly usage though.

Have a look at how many units you are using and how many you used this period last year.

Oh I agree, but I mentioned the thread as to me, it was indicative of a greater trend towards prices increasing, despite usage not necessarily doing so too.
CornishTiger · 03/01/2022 21:38

3bed terrace 607kwh electric 411kwh Gas- that’s over a 34 day period

It’s not hugely different to previous years gas although electric is 150kwh more.

Jobseeker19 · 03/01/2022 21:41

I spend less than £10 a week on gas prepayment meter Edf.

You need to get blankets for the sitting room and make sure every one has a nightgown or onsie.
Once they are worn if you're still cold then put the heating on.

I also don't use a thermostat and switch the heating on and off.
When I do use the heating it is on in 10 min increments just to warm the bones of the house then turned off.

Catcrazy83 · 03/01/2022 21:43

Mine is double the price of last December, considering we had snow last December, it’s very scary to think what April will bring. My fix ran out so I’m on a variable as advised but gosh it’s a lot. Only a small semi too, with very good doors, windows and insulation.

WarmForDecember · 03/01/2022 21:44

@dementedpixie

I've just asked DH and he said that our old bill was £250pm. This apparently wasn't enough to cover our useage and we fell into deficit to the tune of over £1000. Our new DD is £500pm to try to repay some of that but I understand we are on the variable rate.

Nemorth · 03/01/2022 21:45

Our energy use for the time period mentioned before was:

386.0 kWh of electricity

586.4 kWh of gas bill also says we used 52 units (m3).

Our estimated annual usage of electricity is 6092.4 kWh and 4697 kWh of gas.

Electric unit rate of 18.6p/kWh and standing charge of 17.16p per day

Gas unit rate of 3.62p/kWh and standing charge of 19.66p per day.

All prices above do not include VAT that's added in later.

CornishTiger · 03/01/2022 21:46

Agree.

Electric

kWh unit

2019 13.81p
2020 16.27p
2021 19.76p

Standing charge daily
2019 19.47 p
2020 19.42 p
2021 24.44 p

It’s the standing charge that’ll increase bill and the unit charge gas gone up.

PermanentlyTired03 · 03/01/2022 21:58

I'm on octopus variable tariff. I only have gas for heating (combi boiler) and it was £48 last month, used 1059 kWh. 2 bed terrace house. We recently had a Google nest thermostat installed, no smart meter.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 03/01/2022 22:08

Mine says usage for a month
169kwh electric
292kwh gas (26 units)

Was £37 electric, £16 gas

Jamdown123 · 03/01/2022 22:11

My gas is about £120 per month. Victorian high ceilings, 3 bed terraced house, probably little larger than average.

I have heating on 6-8.30am, 3.30-7.30pm. If I get cold I might have it on 2 hours more per day. Always off when I'm out. I have prepayment and I think it's about 70p per hour.

So if you had it on 12 hours a day that already around £8 per day and £240 per month. Easily done. And bloody mad.

Mollymalone123 · 03/01/2022 22:30

@Hoochyhoo
We are in a 2 bed detached bungalow with new double glazing etc
We even get the economy 7 tariff but we only have electricity as rural. I lasted about a week with no heat and then it was soo cold for a couple of weeks I was frozen.! We are on a smart meter. I have been putting washing on overnight as well as tumble dryer. Everything gets switched off -water is heated overnight/ it doesn’t help when you see how much VAT was added on though.
I’m not sure we can switch until Bulb have sorted out who is going to take on their customers

MojoMoon · 03/01/2022 23:26

2 bed terrace, gas boiler (not a combi) for heating and hot water.
Am quite careful about saving energy but also now work from home so heating on a bit more than it was pre Covid.
Hot water heated up in the morning for shower then off. Can put it on again if someone really needs an evening shower.
Heating usually on 2 hours at start of say and 3-4 hours in late afternoon/early evening depending on the outside temperature.

Dec electricity consumption 211kwh
Dec gas consumption 1197kwh

Elec cost £42, gas £44 so £86 in total.

OP what is your actual consumption? It must be enormous.

MiracleBaby2022 · 03/01/2022 23:39

Crikey! I'm in a two-storey flat which was originally a two double bedroom flat now turned into one large, but anyway it's as big as a two bedroom house and I pay £55-£59 per month for both gas and electric.

BarkminsterBlue · 03/01/2022 23:42

@Mollymalone123

That doesn’t seem right. We paid £307 last month for dual fuel with Bulb but that is to heat a four-bedroom detached house and includes charging two electric cars.
Sunsetsupernova · 03/01/2022 23:42

I think that’s loads. We also have a prepayment meter with Bulb but only a 1 bedroom flat. Obviously a lot smaller than your house but last month I only topped up our gas £30 so £170 seems extortionate.

ToddlingForwards · 03/01/2022 23:50

@TalbotAMan we’re in the same position, paying our normal direct debit and expecting a big bill from Shell at some point but have no idea how big. They finally opened our account and took a reading, but only one so far.

Hoochyhoo · 03/01/2022 23:59

This is our usage in the last 10 months, confirmed by an email from bulb. Can’t figure out why the gas bill is so high. We have a huge bath tub but other than that 🤔

Just gas alone has cost us £170 last month
