Where's good value to live near the sea?

TheTallOne · 12/12/2021 06:25

I am having a life changing set of circumstances in my life and I want to live somewhere where I can walk or cycle to the sea

For family reasons, a 3 bedroom detached house or bungalow with a garage

I have scoured Rightmove and seen plenty in and around Ashington and slightly south but they're unknown area's to me or my family

Would I fit in with a black partner I wonder?

Cost of ownership is vital with a top end of £275k cash. I can't get or want a mortgage at my age

Where would you recommend in the UK ?

TIA Smile

Loads of places in the North East would fit your criteria anywhere from Berwick down to about Scarborough, I dont know much abiut places further south than that. I suppose it depends what you want for your money. I'm in Sunderland you would get a fair sized house for your money, Tynemouth you would be looking at something smaller or further from the sea.

North Wales

Birchington or Westgate on Sea, in East Kent. We used to go as children and I would love to live there, houses should be affordable for you based on Rightmove.

Blackpool is cheap as chips.

DogDaysNeverEnd · 12/12/2021 07:32

Do you have any other priorities like transport links, work, schools, health care? 275k for a detached house is going to mean compromise on things that people are generally looking for. Is there any great need for the house to be detached?

There are some quite run down parts of the NE where you might find something, as your searches have shown, but usually for a reason. A 3 bed detached in a desirable location along the NE coast would be 500k or more, so up to you if the compromise to get something less is ok for you. I'd recommend a winter visit and see what you think (everywhere looks nice in the sunshine, try for a gray day!).

There’s a reason for that (sorry if that offends anyone).
DogDaysNeverEnd · 12/12/2021 07:41

Just to clarify, I don't mean to sound snobbish - there are plenty of places that are just fine, but prices reflect in general the value people put on living in an area, for the reasons I stated before (transport etc). I don't think there are many undervalued hidden gems anymore, prices are what they are for a reason, and only you can decide if that suits you.

Tiddlywinks10 · 12/12/2021 07:45

My in laws live on the NE coast, my southern self had a right shock going for a January coast walk.

The coastline is beautiful as has been said but there’s not lots going on in Teeside area and it run down in areas.

SpookyHalloween · 12/12/2021 09:11

Lytham St Annes (next to Blackpool) is lovely

There's a reason for that. Absolute sithole, full of poverty and drug addicts. Avoid Blackpool at all costs.
Chipsahoy · 15/12/2021 12:21

Seaham? It’s very family friendly and they have stuck a ton of money in it in recent years. We are renting in the area while we wait for our house in Scotland and honestly I really love it here. I didn’t expect to but everyone is friendly and the parks are clean. Beaches are fab. Lots on in the community.

gogohm · 15/12/2021 12:28

Ne definitely, look at Durham coast or teeside

DuneFan · 15/12/2021 12:32

You mention your partner standing out. There's very little diversity in the parts of the North East being recommended here. I don't think you/they would necessarily be made unwelcome though.

The closer you get to Newcastle the more diverse it is but also prices increase.

namechange30455 · 15/12/2021 12:41

How close to the sea would you consider walking/cycling distance?

I'm from the north east and I personally would not consider living in Ashington. As mentioned above, overall the North East is not very diverse, but closer to the cities you do find more diversity.

I'd consider this in Whitburn, which is on the edge of south tyneside/sunderland, considered a lovely area and desirable.

Cullercoats, Whitley Bay, South Beach in Blyth?

Seaham, Seaburn or Whitburn?

PlanetNormal · 15/12/2021 22:36

The Lincolnshire coast, from Cleethorpes down to Skegness. A lot of people move there to retire & live in one of the many static caravan parks. It’s not exactly a scenic, fashionable or upmarket part of the country, it’s quite geographically isolated, and it’s very quiet in winter, but if you’re looking for somewhere genuinely affordable on the coast, it may be worth considering.

RobinPenguins · 15/12/2021 22:40

Absolutely not Ashington. Your budget won’t stretch to Tynemouth but with a bit of compromise might almost stretch to Whitley Bay.

That bungalow is in South Shields which is a completely different kettle of fish to Whitburn. Still looks nice and the beach/cliffs at South Shields are lovely but it isn't Whitburn.

bravotango · 16/12/2021 09:34

If semi-detached is a possibility, I'd look north of Liverpool, Crosby way? Lovely sandy beaches. You might stretch to parts of the Wirral too.

With a black partner? (Mentioned by the op as presumably they want somewhere their partner feels welcomed)?

East Kent is cheap and relatively diverse

Laska2Meryls · 16/12/2021 10:12

It is predominantly white ethnic ( like a lot of small places in the uk) but there are plenty of people of all ethnicities here.. I really dont think OPs partner would have a problem..

Laska2Meryls · 16/12/2021 10:18

Seriously I do think the area gets a bad rap...I moved here from Brighton about 20years ago.. yes its a bit different of course to living in a vibrant city but there's an arty alternative scene here if you want it. And we hosted national Pride here year before last.. plus IOW festival each year etc.
Of course I am not defending anyone who holds uninclusive views and yes they do exist in some people ( as they did in Brighton) but just saying its a nice vibrant place, good value housing, definitely by the sea and I think worth a look
