We hired movers

Just posting this here as I know it was something I googled before hiring movers. I was in two minds about it due to the cost but I’m so glad I went ahead- it made the move so much easier.

We used a local company and they were excellent. They packed everything away. Before they arrived, we went through everything and packed the items we didn’t want them to do, and had them boxed and labeled; I wanted to do my own clothes and toiletries.

We also spent some time ensuring everything was in the room we wanted to have it packed up with- the movers just literally packed everything that was in that room regardless of where it actually belonged.

In particular, I love how they packed delicate items like glassware- they did it much faster and better than I would have done. They were like a swarm of locusts. For bigger items like our massive sofa that has very delicate fabric, they removed the legs and split it (it in two pieces as it’s a corner sofa), wrapped it in plastic and them reassembled at our new house. Mattresses went into protective bags.

At the new house, they put all the boxes and items into the rooms we instructed.

In total, it cost us just over £1,500. Bit cheap, but we definitely felt it was worth it. We got moved in about 8 hours where it would have definitely taken us 2-3 days to do it ourselves, and we’d have had to rent a van.

The company we used charged in 15 minute blocks and we had three movers- they were also happy to do some other bits for us (needed some existing furniture in the new house moved to different rooms, and a bed assembled) as it was all on the clock anyway.

Just posting in case anyone else is weighing up whether to use movers or not. I’d 100% use a moving company again in future.

I totally agree, I "helped" a friend move earlier in the year....I say "help" because we both did very little other than transport a few things in our cars and the removal people did the rest. The quality of packing and the speed at which they did it was amazing. Plus they know how to load a van so there wasn't a square inch wasted! When we got to her new house the sellers were still running round like mad folk randomly stuffing items into cars and vans even though the money had transferred well over an hour beforehand.

SmallBoyFury · 08/12/2021 13:15

“Bit cheap“ should say “not cheap”.

Absolutely. I'm NEVER ever moving again without a removal service. Never. Worth every penny these guys.

@Loti92 my friend had literally packed an overnight bag, stripped the bed and packed a shopping bag with tea, coffee and milk in. She also emptied the attic prior to them coming but they packed and moved everything on the day. For bigger jobs I think they might pack the day before but that might also depend how far you're moving.

Interested to know how you found a decent company. We looked at recommendations, got three quotations, picked the ones who seemed professional and sensible and courteous. Big company. Trunk logistics. They destroyed furniture handed down from my grandmother beyond anything I would have believed. I would have treated my belongings so much better moving them myself. Felt like paying someone to kick me.

SmallBoyFury · 08/12/2021 17:32

@Loti92

Thanks for this. We should be moving in the new year and have 3 kids 4 and under and worried how I will do it. Is there anything you need to do prep wise first? I'd kind of feel nervous not doing anything to prep for moving until just before we move and the movers do the packing!
I just kind of grouped things together so they’d be packed together and then placed into the same room. So I took the Christmas decorations down from the attic and put them in the living room so they’d all end up in the living room of the new house, in preparing for putting up the tree there.

I packed all of my own clothes and put those in the corner of the bedroom so they’d move with the bedroom stuff, but didn’t get in the way of the packing.

Because we packed our own toiletries, the movers didn’t need to go into our en suite so I housed our cat there with food, water, and a litter tray- I didn’t want her getting in the way, or lost.

I also made sure I had some door stops to hand so the movers could leave the front door propped open as they were lifting furniture out.

Lastly, before they arrived, I put a box of essentials (kettle, teabags, coffee machine, cereal, milk, cat food etc) into my car so I wouldn’t have to rummage in boxes on the first night/morning.

Other than that, I kept out of the way of the movers and did coffee runs to keep everyone going. They were very nice people and didn’t seem to mind me standing in the hall of the new house being very precise about where all the boxes had to go Grin

Oh no, your poor thing. That’s very upsetting. Were you able to claim through their insurance? I know it won’t replace family heirlooms, but may have helped towards repair?

I found our movers via a recommendation from a friend who’d used them last year. Also checked reviews on Google and Facebook.

It's the only cost in moving house I am happy to pay for!

2bazookas · 08/12/2021 17:49

packed all of my own clothes and put those in the corner of the bedroom so they’d move with the bedroom stuff, but didn’t get in the way of the packing.

Just a tip;' don't bother :-) Anything that's in chests of drawers, they just move it IN the drawers. Anything hanging up in a wardrobe or coat cupboard, they take on the hangers, and hang them in the removal van ( which has a special hanging clothes section) . Then at the other end, they put the drawers back in the chests and hang the clothes in the wardrobes. They never even get creased.
Leave the beds made up. They just roll the whole caboodle into a pack, and at the other end they put the bed back together then unroll the bedding onto it

All I pack, is a laundry basket with kettle, tea/coffee/mugs/milk/ and a few basics, lav paper j cloths soap/petfood/towel It comes with us in the car. So on arrival you can set up a bathroom and a drinks station.

Paying for the removers to pack everything is worth every penny.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/12/2021 17:54

It’s brilliant, I was so glad to pay movers when we did

One tip - make sure everything is in the room you want it to be. I left a glass on my bedside table which was packed up with the bed room stuff and somehow left my toothbrush in the baby’s room - both just got packed up where they were and my toothbrush took ages to find!

AmIgoinghomeforXmas · 08/12/2021 17:58

I love movers packing services but once I didn't empty a bin quick enough and it got packed full!

Werk · 08/12/2021 18:02

Completely agree.
We moved my PIL a few years ago from one three storey house to another and it was a nightmare. It took 6 of us 8 hours and was back breaking.

We have moved twice in a year and used movers both times to do the packing too.

It was worth it just to have the furniture re assembled and everything in the right room.

They do pack everything though, so be ruthless before they come and get rid of bits you don't want.

I think we paid £1800 in London.

MuslinsRLife · 08/12/2021 18:08

We used movers, they didn’t pack so we did the boxing but labelled every box with a number - then every room in the new house with a number. So they put the boxes in the correct rooms. It was perfect, they were so fast!
100% would never move without using movers. I’m not sure if I’d want them to pack too (I suppose it would ease the stress even more!) but it cost me around £800 which I think was brilliant value!

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 08/12/2021 18:13

Another tip i got which made a huge difference - pack a laundry basket or box with all critical paperwork, transport that yourself and pop it in the bath when you get to the new house. This means that even if bits of furniture end up with boxes in front of them or whatever you can still locate those vital pieces of info. We also shut the cats in the same bathroom with their litter tray and stuck a sign on the door to leave it shut

Laufeythejust · 08/12/2021 18:24

We used movers this time and it’s the BEST decision ever! We cheaped out though and did the packing ourselves- they dropped off all the packing stuff and the guy talked me through how to pack the boxes and what to wrap up. We used Britannia and I couldn’t praise them enough- they just wanted lots of strong tea and us to be out of their way. 2 blokes had a 4 bed detached with garage emptied in 2 hours and the new house done within 1 and a half. Beds reassembled, furniture back together it was amazing and made such a difference- stress free move! Best £1500 we have spent.

Oneforthemoneytwo · 08/12/2021 21:43

I’m amazed anyone tries to move themselves. We have always used a full packing service and other than getting a skip to clear out any rubbish we don’t do a thing. They move everything and then at the new house they reassemble it all too. It’s so worth it

"Not cheap"?

3 days work, a £60,000 truck, insurance, etc, etc.

witsendeverytime · 08/12/2021 22:39

Oh totally agree. I did once move myself when it was just me, but with kids and pets no way I'd ever do that again. Packers for sure. It's not stress free by any means but it avoids the complete nightmare of trying to diy.

SmallBoyFury · 08/12/2021 23:40

You know that they didn’t throw out the truck when they were finished with our move, and reused it, don’t you?

Also, it wasn’t three days, it was 7.5 hours so £200/hr. Not a cheap service, but one that was very worthwhile.

Justcannotbearsed · 09/12/2021 05:44

It took 2 days to pack ours, there’d been a family illness so no time to declutter, but I’d recommend decluttering first.

But they pack so dispassionately, and everything Gets packed. We had one case where we packed up ourselves of personal papers.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 09/12/2021 11:31

3 movers for a day is 3 days work.

The cost of the truck is obviously spread.

Why are people so surprised at the price of a professional service

TheDogsMother · 09/12/2021 11:35

It's worth absolutely every penny and the cost pales into insignificance once you've paid Estate Agents, Solicitor and stamp duty.
