We hired movers

Just posting this here as I know it was something I googled before hiring movers. I was in two minds about it due to the cost but I’m so glad I went ahead- it made the move so much easier.

We used a local company and they were excellent. They packed everything away. Before they arrived, we went through everything and packed the items we didn’t want them to do, and had them boxed and labeled; I wanted to do my own clothes and toiletries.

We also spent some time ensuring everything was in the room we wanted to have it packed up with- the movers just literally packed everything that was in that room regardless of where it actually belonged.

In particular, I love how they packed delicate items like glassware- they did it much faster and better than I would have done. They were like a swarm of locusts. For bigger items like our massive sofa that has very delicate fabric, they removed the legs and split it (it in two pieces as it’s a corner sofa), wrapped it in plastic and them reassembled at our new house. Mattresses went into protective bags.

At the new house, they put all the boxes and items into the rooms we instructed.

In total, it cost us just over £1,500. Bit cheap, but we definitely felt it was worth it. We got moved in about 8 hours where it would have definitely taken us 2-3 days to do it ourselves, and we’d have had to rent a van.

The company we used charged in 15 minute blocks and we had three movers- they were also happy to do some other bits for us (needed some existing furniture in the new house moved to different rooms, and a bed assembled) as it was all on the clock anyway.

Just posting in case anyone else is weighing up whether to use movers or not. I’d 100% use a moving company again in future.

@VeniVidiWeeWee

3 movers for a day is 3 days work.

The cost of the truck is obviously spread.

Why are people so surprised at the price of a professional service

Are you a mover? You seem very upset about this.

Nobody has said they’re “surprised” about the price. It’s an additional and optional cost and £1,500 objectively isn’t cheap. I was very happy to pay it (and tipped the three movers on top of it) but it worked out costing more than the solicitor who managed the purchase for us.

Hiring movers is a luxury.

I guess it depends on how much the house costs, comparatively, London is extremely cheap given that a 1.8k movers would translate into a 4bed house which worth between 1m and 2m (0.18% and 0.09%) in most part of the city. For a 100k house in a cheaper part of the country, that s a whole 1.8% of the house price, no chance.

Do they leave the food in the fridge?

HogDogKetchup · 11/12/2021 19:39

Movers are game changers. So much better.

Moving home definitely isn't easy but I've attached some useful blogs and pages from our family ran Removal & Storage company North east of England
Highly recommended company the reason why you should expect to pay a little bit more for a removal company is preparation, correct equipment and correct vehicle for the job/being able to subcontract a job out if it isn't suitable for that company.
Small man & van type soletraders wont be members of approved groups which wont give them the option to sub contract work if they are booked to capacity, budget or low cost moves wont have the correct protective equipment (mattress bags, sofa covers, quilted blankets, transit blankets, floor and door covers).
The likes of "anyvan" which is literally anyvan have been on watchdog for the lack of information provided to customers when booking.
Always be aware to check reviews when booking for this reason.

The amount of horror stories our staff hear on a daily basis when our customers have went for a more budget company first time around.

We're moving in mid January, and I've had one quote so far for the removal, including full packing service and dismantling a couple of beds and a wardrobe, and reassembling at the other end. We're moving from the north west up to central Scotland (195 miles), so I was expecting to have to pay a fair bit, but the first quote came in at £3300! Ours is a typical 3 bed semi and we don't have a huge amount of big stuff to shift. Only one sofa to move, an IKEA day bed and a kids' mid sleeper. Does it seem expensive to anyone else??

Whattochoosenow · 28/12/2021 09:05

I agree. Pack nothing apart from personal items you are taking with you in the car. If anything is broken and you packed it yourself they’ll just say it was done incorrectly. They are so quick and efficient and it’s not a lot extra.

romatheroamer · 29/12/2021 06:52

Moved quite a lot and more recent times always had them pack as well. If we reverted to packing ourselves now we'd probably end up like those who are still in the house faffing around after completion....see numerous other threads!

We are moving 5 mins up the road and have had quotes ranging from man and van with no packing at £1200, through £2000 with some packing, up to £5100 with all packing.

All our bedroom furniture is fitted, but we do have a lot of sofas, beds, bookshelves and TV's!

I was very surprised by how expensive it is.

We are going with a middle range one and adding in all the packing. So it will come in at around £2400. Also, for an extra payment, we will have cleaners at both ends.

This is simply not an option for anyone selling and buying as part of the move as you have leave your old home completely empty at the moment you get the keys to the new.

Having the removal co pack if you can afford it is fantastic. They do it in one day usually, the day before moving, so no living with half packed boxes. They provide all the boxes, and take them away again to reuse once you have unpacked. Their insurance covers stuff they have packed.

All proper removal companies will dismantle and take re-assemble beds and other large pieces.

spongedog · 30/12/2021 10:36

Did any of you pay for unpacking services as well?

NorthSouthcatlady · 30/12/2021 13:39

@whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy no. The fridge isn’t useable for the first 24 hours after moving anyway, as you need to wait for the gases to settle

NorthSouthcatlady · 30/12/2021 13:41

Totally worth it. As other have said when so much has been spent and on so many things you get no benefit from (stamp duty!) then movers are totally worth it. The guys we used last time we moved were excellent

CeibaTree · 01/01/2022 09:50

We used packers when we moved this summer, they were great and so efficient- the only slight criticism I would have was they only labelled the boxes with what room things were packed from, rather than what was in the boxes, so it took us a few days to find our cutlery for example. But totally worth the £1500 we paid :)
