If so, please can I see a photo, or have some general wisdom on how to go about it & how much it cost?

Thanks very much Smile

We have. We just used battening and plaster board to make the shape, had it plastered. Made a harth, covered in tiles. Also used a wooden beam above. Looks great. Dh did the frame/plaster board etc. BIL is a plaster so cost very little but shouldn’t be to expensive, maybe £300 on materials etc.

Glassofshloer · 07/12/2021 19:51

Thanks, I have to confess I have no idea what battening is 😬

What’s a fake wood burner? Something like this?

Made rhe shape of what?

Op you don’t have them installed, you just plug them in. Buy one, plug it in, that’s it,

ChequerBoard · 07/12/2021 20:05

Confused - do you mean a mean an electric heater shaped to look a bIt like a woodburner?

mightbeyesmightbeno · 07/12/2021 20:06

Am also interested in this, we had quotes for a real one but it's just way out of price range and so are considering a fake burner and go make a fireplace. But I'd want a burner that looked really nice & realistic.

LaBellaTrix · 07/12/2021 20:11

We had a fake plug in one in this house, when we moved in. It did the trick, looked nice, and kept the house toasty. We have since replaced it with a real woodburner though.

HandlebarLadyTash · 07/12/2021 21:38

I have the plug in the fireplace & the purchase has been on the to do list for 2yrs.
Fake ligburner or fake candle storm lamp thing? I start looking & then get distracted...

Bettybantz · 07/12/2021 22:50

I have this in my bedroom - it’s only a cheapie one, £50 from B&Q. The ‘hole’ was there but I bought a beam from Etsy and stuck it on with No More Nails.

Thanks for replies & suggestions everyone!

@Bettybantz lovely pic with the cat, he/she looks very cosy!

We don’t have a ‘hole’ in the wall, we currently have a fire a bit like this, I guess it will be a case of having it taken out & a hole created - I don’t know who to even ask about that, so clueless am I.

We have just had a Gazco Loft installed with a welsh slate hearth. It's amazing - looks just like a Swedish logburner stove. We deliberated for ages about getting a logburner or a gas type one, and because of the fact that we prefer to have something pretty instant, rather than a logburner which you have to light and leave in when you go out, the gas one won out. You can programme it on night and day programmes, and a thermostat control, as well as an instant low to high control.

It wasn't cheap - more like the price of a woodburner plus installation - but we'd made do with a terrible wall affixed gas heater which we inherited when we bought the house, so felt we deserved a decent one. It has transformed the look of our 20 x 12 foot lounge. Looks so realistic.

INeedSixEggs · 08/12/2021 08:39

Wow the Gazco ones look a really good option. I have the same thing OP where I want a really realistic looking "log burner" type fire.

DaphneduM · 08/12/2021 08:41

Just seen your last post - we used a firm that installs both real woodburners and the gas ones. Our last gas fire didn't have a flu, so we needed a flu put up through the chimney and then a cowl put on the top,
They needed to knock out where the original fireplace opening had been bricked in and then afterwards the whole area re-plastered. It took the two gas engineers two days- the whole job including stove and hearth was £4.500 - we're older, so not planning to move again, so it's absolutely worrh it to us. Sorry, I can't post a pic from this device but you can google Gazco loft and have a look. If you could have one with a balanced flu which just goes to an outside wall, then it would be cheaper for you than ours.

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2021 08:54

I’d recommend a builder as yoire not having a wood burner installed, so no chimney lining, flue etc. you will need a gas engineer to decommission the gas fire.

Glassofshloer · 08/12/2021 16:17

Thanks @Bluntness100 I will do that.

Dreading booking any tradespeople at the moment if I’m honest!

We have an optimist electric stove but we only use it as a feature as opposed to heat the room. It uses steam to create a flame effect and we bought a fireplace off eBay.

SollaSollew · 09/12/2021 10:24

As an alternative we're currently putting in a bio ethanol fireplace as we only have a really tiny opening in our fireplace. You buy bottles of fluid that burn so it's a real flame and gives off heat but the fireplace its self is a single unit and doesn't require any venting.

We've bought this one and my husband is literally fitting it to the wall now...

I'll send a picture in-situ later today (fingers crossed) if you're interested.

INeedSixEggs · 09/12/2021 13:55

Oooo yes pls!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/12/2021 22:40

@Bettybantz is that my parents cat you've stolen?!

AnnieSnap · 11/12/2021 19:29

I have something similar that is nice, but it’s quite old now and I suspect the LED versions look better. I would never have a real one because they are terrible for the environment. Off to have a look at the new electric versions.
