1000mm butler/belfast sink - Shaws? Any other options?

kitchenskitchen · 06/12/2021 12:50

It appears my kitchen design works better with a 1000mm double butler/belfast sink rather than 800 to avoid a 100mm gap.

Is the only option a Shaws or does anyone know of anyone else who does this size? needs to be white. Thanks

Anyone know any other options? Thanks

villeroy and boch do a 900mm but dont appear to do a 1000mm as I dont want a drainer.

It's not just the sink that you will have a problem finding, you need short cabinet to go with it too. Most companies that I've been looking at offer a 600mm or 800mm Belfast sink cabinet only ( admittedly I'm looking at low end price wise )
Having actually used an 800mm one at my friends house I can't see any reason ( for us ) to have a larger one . Why do you specifically need one bigger than 800mm? Maybe a solution for that need can be met elsewhere?

kitchenskitchen · 10/12/2021 10:37

Thanks all the cupboards are being handmade so i can have any size.

However the sink needs to be central on the window and to fit in between a structural chimney breast so the layout options are extremely limited. If I use a 800 then there is a 100 gap between corner unit and sink, using a 100 it prevents the gap. a 600 sink would give a usable gap but i want a double sink

i actually dont need a 1000 but would probably dry recycling and items that cant go in dishwasher in one side to keep work surface clutter free but there wont be much washing as there are 2 dishwashers. it is a big kitchen with large range cooker so it wont look out of proportion.

1000 is massive. I have the Shaws waterside and it’s actually 760 to fit an 800 unit. It’s absolutely enormous. A 1000 sink full of water must be very heavy. My builders were moaning about the empty weight of the 800.

kitchenskitchen · 10/12/2021 12:29

Clooudtree - it would be a double sink so would only ever have water in one half and I would imagine using a washing up bowl in that section and straining into the other half or draining our recycling when washed. Is yours a double or single?

OP posts:
cloudtree · 10/12/2021 12:46

Mines a single since I wanted to be able to clean large racks and oven trays etc (we also have 2x two drawer dishwashers so I don’t often need to wash anything else unless it’s a quick rinse of a glass

Shangrilalala · 10/12/2021 12:49

I have the Villeroy & Boch; it’s superb and I would buy it all over again.

This is despite my kitchen planner ‘expert’ telling me with disdain that it would look ridiculous in a sleek, high shine kitchen. Tosser.

beggingforsleep · 10/12/2021 13:12

With a 100 gap could you not have a pull out towel rail of something?

kitchenskitchen · 10/12/2021 15:34

Not sure about a towel rail because the handmade kitchen is inframe style so they specify more than 100m for a towel rail slot as the frame is 40mm each side of the slot.

If the kitchen is bespoke simply get a bigger corner unit ?

kitchenskitchen · 10/12/2021 20:36

it doesnt work like that as the corner unit has the 2 doors hinged in the middle (bifold?) and for them to be the same size there is no space before there is a structural chimney breast so it cant be made bigger. does that make sense or i will try to do a sketch?

What company is it?

kitchenskitchen · 11/12/2021 16:11

cloudtree - if you mean what company for the kitchen - HMKC

1000 is massive.

We had a 1200 in a place we rented. I miss it.

1000mm butler/belfast sink - Shaws? Any other options?
cloudtree · 11/12/2021 17:48

Thought it might be hmkc. Just be careful in your design because you said in an earlier post you can have any sizes but you can’t. There are still max and min sizes and the depths are largely fixed (which personally I found frustrating). I know you can have up to 1000 with a Belfast style sink but that would mean you should think twice about any of the Shaws of Darwen range since they’re hand cast and you do get variation. We had to do a fair amount of fiddling about with our sink unit with lots of planing of the wood and if you’ve maxed out your sink size (since 1000w is the widest sink unit hmkc do) you’ll have no wriggle room.

kitchenskitchen · 11/12/2021 18:25

cloudtree - i am very aware of the min and max sizes and could quote them to you for each unit in the range i have spent so much time on this kitchen!!! I am far more than frustrated. My sink unit would be 1080 for a 1000 sink so we would perhaps have some tolerance to plane down the frame.

I am very interested to hear your learnings from the experience especially if you fitted it yourself.

OP posts:
cloudtree · 11/12/2021 18:38

Well my main learning is around the material. It’s mainly mdf. The wood is veneered and very thin and so any planing down means you are back down to the mdf very quickly.
The mirrored cabinets do not use real mirror, it’s some sort of plastic and so the image is distorted.
The magnets on the cabinets are incredibly strong which affects handle placement. I wanted some handles on the bottom corners of larder units and my joiner wouldn’t let me because it would damage the hinges very quickly.
I had joiners fit mine. I wouldn’t have wanted to do it ourselves although it might be ok in a new build with perfectly straight walls and level floors etc.
once painted you don’t see that they’re mainly mdf and veneered mdf so I’m still pleased with the overall value and the customer service is good. They quickly resolved the problems we had.

TizerorFizz · 11/12/2021 19:31

Not sure if this would work for you, but I have my large 2 bowl ceramic sink set into the worktop that is 800 deep. It ex easy to install as far as I’m aware! Either side of the sink unit are curved doors which span the space between the 800 and 600 deep work surface. I have a large kitchen too and the change in depth of the work surface adds a great deal of interest and a shelf behind the sink for soap and the tidy for washing up liquid etc. The splash back is glass.

kitchenskitchen · 11/12/2021 19:57

cloudtree - thanks for this. we are not planning any mirrors but I think the handles on the larder top need to be low - was this an issue on larder top? HMKC use less hinges than others ie Martin Moore etc for same size cabinet ie 1500 high larder top or 2.4m full height. I had thought to add more hinges. Did you need to alter your design much to fit their limitations?

Are you happy with magnet catches now or would you have preferred the others? We are not in a new build but have a workshop so can alter or make additional units, it would just be too time consuming to make them all. However there are more restrictions than is explained in the catalogue/price list that have only come to light at a later stage which has been unexpected as i researched it carefully.

TizerorFizz - i wish i knew how to upload but it says my photo has too big a memory. Unfortunately it wouldnt work to increase the work top depth as kitchen is already too narrow at the sink and too long overall. Yours sounds lovely - mine wont be focal as it is "hidden" behind the island whereas the aga is in structural chimney with feature tiles and mantlepiece on breast as focal point

OP posts:
kitchenskitchen · 11/12/2021 19:59

Coogee -- that is gorgeous thank you.

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 11/12/2021 20:12

Put it in the island?

kitchenskitchen · 11/12/2021 20:17

thanks but water underfloor heating installed and floor laid on top throughout ready for kitchen delivery so that is definitely not an option

OP posts:
cloudtree · 11/12/2021 20:53

I had to put my larder top handles midway. The door pulled too much with them on the bottom. Additional hinges might have helped
