Calling all lovely people from Manchester: Longsight? Old Trafford? Victoria Park?

Hi all, OH got a job offer in Manchester - south Manchester would be best for us.

Are Longsight, Old Trafford and Victoria Park a definite NO?

We could be cash buyers there and buy something really nice, but not if the community is super rough. We live in north London so used to a bit of grit.

So that’s where Dosa Express disappeared to... Used to be on the side of the Stretford Mall!

I love this thread, you are all so helpful, I can't tell you how grateful I am to you all

So today duding a zoom meeting at work during the 'where are you based' ice breaker part (I work for a company with branches in several nations) I uttered for the first time the words: 'I am based in London but moving to Manchester after the summer' nobody really cared but for me it felt momentous and made it suddenly more real.

Marland Way is just a bit out of the way really.

I'm afraid I'd agree with levenshulme, sorry. It's been "up and coming" for about 15 years and never seems to quite get there. Plus the public transport is rubbish, I think that's part of the issue. You could look at withington/ladybarn/burnage? Although just houses not many amenities in burnage. Lots in withington however, although lots of students live there still... Near to West didsbury too. Very trendy.

I lived in the Heatons for a decade and then moved on a while ago. I've kept an eye on prices there since and, for what its worth, I think that Julian Wadden’s are the Heatons equivalent of Edward Mellor in Levrbshulme. I think that many moons ago JW was part of Didsbury based agency and brought a lot of the same mentality to the Hestons market- price it high & talk it up. While there’s some nice housing stock in the 4H’s, they're all jammed in between Stockport and Levy. I wouldn't wish a commute down the A6 on anyone! Much shorter trip into town from the Trafford end, especially along the towpath and connected cycle routes.

Anyone else remember when ‘Burnidge’ became ‘Bair-narj’, that well-known ‘suburb’ of Didsbury according to a certain local estate agents ? 😊 Prices started rising.

siestasiesta · 08/12/2021 21:14

This is in Didsbury, 3 bedrooms for £315,000. Third bedroom is small, the house is under budget though. It's near two tram stops and Didsbury is very nice and on a cycle route into Manchester City Centre. There are lots of shops and restaurants in Didsbury and good transport links, it's very convenient.

Avoid Fallowfield, a friend lived there and had problems with noise and anti-social behaviour.

Levenshulme has been up and coming for a very long time. The houses can be beautiful but the area isn't great.

Longford Park is nice, Chorlton has a great vibe. It has quite high crime rates.

@FelinaDaHousecat

Hi all, sorry after a bit of a lull work is just mad at the moment, no chance of me spending any time on MN for the next couple of days - or on RM dreaming about our future house - but just to say YES YES YES please derail to your heart's content, loving the restaurant recommendations and I am compiling a list of places to visit when we go trying places.

Also appreciate the continued suggestion of Stretford - speaking of which

is this house so cheap and not selling because

it borders on the canal and it would be easy to break into?
or is it because it's modern and not period?
or did somebody die of terrible death there?
or is it overpriced compared to surrondings?

Would love to hear thoughts :)

I am from Stretford and it could be that it is quite modern, no one died there ;-). All the period houses in Stretford tend to go quickly.
MindTheGapMoveAlong · 09/12/2021 23:06

Top of your budget @FelinaDaHousecat but something like this in Firswood?

Stretford is great. Its down the road from me (Urmston). Urmston is better. Round by Victoria Park in Stretford is OK. Near Longford Park is lovely but more expensive. I like Bradfield Road near moss park. Lots of gentrification.

Flixton too is very nice if you don't want to pay Urmston prices. Don't move to smelly Davyhulme despite nice properties. Nearby sewage plant can stink

Be very careful around Stretford as some bits are not great.

I think you could afford the good areas of Manchester rather than shitty areas.

Stretford is on the up. Old Trafford is grim. Avoid firswood near the United grounds. S

I like that canal house and I like the canal. The canal is by a more industrial area a carpark and a busy main road, but actually on the canal path is chilled out. You can walk to Sale or Salford Quays along it, and wider cycle to Chorlton or Lymm.

ZenNudist · 09/12/2021 23:33

Oh also on the subject of Urmston I live Stretford side of Urmston and get the tram home. It takes me 15 mins. I either walk 20 mins in summer or get a cab for £2.50. You can park cheaply opposite the tram. Tram also to event city 5 min drive from my house but Never tried that as the new trafford centre line opened up in lockdown

SwayingInTime · 09/12/2021 23:41

Old Trafford really isn’t grim.

Turkishangora · 10/12/2021 11:25

Few mates living in both firswood and old Trafford, not grim!

Every area in MCR has good and bad bits, it's a big city. It's how it is. Chorlton has some scuzzy bits too as well as some lovely areas.
