Calling all lovely people from Manchester: Longsight? Old Trafford? Victoria Park?

Hi all, OH got a job offer in Manchester - south Manchester would be best for us.

Are Longsight, Old Trafford and Victoria Park a definite NO?

We could be cash buyers there and buy something really nice, but not if the community is super rough. We live in north London so used to a bit of grit.

@FelinaDaHousecat No offence taken at all. It was just that yesterday I heard someone being interviewed on Times Radio who mentioned that he used to supply a lot of teachers and ‘people like that’ and one of the places he mentioned was Sale
Grin.

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 07/12/2021 19:25

Sorry, that didn’t make sense. For some reason the bit about ‘supply a lot of cocaine to’ got mangled between preview and post.

edgeware · 07/12/2021 19:43

Daisy bank road is student ville and burglary ville. There are some amazing houses round there, no doubt, I viewed a beautiful house there some years ago. But happy I didn’t.

Yourheartwillleadyouhome · 07/12/2021 20:14

Viet Guy in Northenden is as good as Mi & Pho AND they do salt and pepper soft shelled crab 😍

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 08/12/2021 10:51

Good to know @Yourheartwillleadyouhome but I’ve never seen VietGuy open! Have you tried Amma’s in Chorlton?
Apologies for derailing your thread @FelinaDaHousecat. At least you’ll know where to eat when you get here. Happy house hunting.

evtheria · 08/12/2021 11:02

If I could I’d go back to Stretford - I used to live in a huge Victorian between the tram stop and Longford Park, loved it! Hate to think £400k couldn’t buy a 3-bed now, though...

AnnaPerenna · 08/12/2021 11:18

@MindTheGapMoveAlong - I thought you were talking about supply teachers!! XD

Yourheartwillleadyouhome · 08/12/2021 11:53

VietGuy is always open - more than Mi&Pho, I like their lunchtime deals too.

Yes sorry to derail!

Yourheartwillleadyouhome · 08/12/2021 11:55

I did try Amma's and I wanted to love it but I only liked it. We are v loyal to Dosa Express in Withington!

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 08/12/2021 12:01

Thanks @Yourheartwillleadyouhome; love Dosa too!

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 08/12/2021 12:10

@AnnaPerenna maybe I was Grin. No idea but the interviewee talking about the cokehead teachers in suburban Sale made me laugh. ALL the teachers I know (and yes, some of them are in Sale) are (a) too poor to blow their salaries on recreational drugs - house prices/rents in Trafford are 😱 and (b) already so wired with stress/Covid/distance learning provisions I don’t think a Friday night toot would even make an impact.
3 miles down the road may be another story…

FelinaDaHousecat · 08/12/2021 12:31

Hi all, sorry after a bit of a lull work is just mad at the moment, no chance of me spending any time on MN for the next couple of days - or on RM dreaming about our future house - but just to say YES YES YES please derail to your heart's content, loving the restaurant recommendations and I am compiling a list of places to visit when we go trying places.

Also appreciate the continued suggestion of Stretford - speaking of which

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/81561876#/?channel=RES_BUY

is this house so cheap and not selling because

it borders on the canal and it would be easy to break into?
or is it because it's modern and not period?
or did somebody die of terrible death there?
or is it overpriced compared to surrondings?

Would love to hear thoughts :)

I think you need to really get to grips with the transport options and cycle path network.
There are places further out but better connected in terms of trains, trams and buses.
What are the main reasons to be near city? Commute, getting home from nights out, etc. Some places are well connected through the day but last train is 10.30
This site is handy lasttramfrom.com/piccadilly-gardens

Mirrorxx · 08/12/2021 12:58

@FelinaDaHousecat I know someone who owned one of those houses and they were broken in to. But they did like the location for cycling to the office

lastqueenofscotland · 08/12/2021 13:14

I went to see a flat on marland way 80million years ago, I really felt it lacked any privacy

I was looking at Amma's the other day online. Worth a visit ?
BobbyGentry · 08/12/2021 13:22

Heaton Moor is good. Train station Heaton Chapel. Two stops from town. Nice houses, good school and a lovely row of shop fronts with independent shops, pubs, cafés, delis etc.

BobbyGentry · 08/12/2021 13:24

Heaton Moor, great location www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/115441697#/?channel=RES_BUY

DistrictCommissioner · 08/12/2021 13:47

I used to live pretty near Marland Way. I think it would be okay security wise but it’s a long way from the tram or in fact anything much - the railway station is very close but very few trains.

Beerandchips · 08/12/2021 13:58

OP I currently rent in Chorlton, which I love but is more expensive, and we are buying in Old Trafford (not too far from Firswood) which is about a mile away so still near all the great stuff Chorlton has to offer, especially if you cycle. On your budget you could definitely afford Old Trafford and Chorlton (but would have less space). Highly recommend as a cyclist. Urmston and the Heatons although nice are that much further out and rely on rail links which aren't as reliable as the tram. The Heatons is awful to cycle in in my experience, as are parts of Levenshulme. They are also nowhere near trams and I highly recommend being near the tram if you don't drive or don't drive very often. Buses are not like they are in London - they are more expensive and less frequent, plus there are far fewer bus lanes so often get stuck in traffic. I think for your purposes Firswood kind of area is perfect. Also near the lovely Longford Park which has an amazing cafe. Good luck from a fellow London expat!

@userxx, absolutely worth it 😊 Bit be warned their version of eton mess might be too much to handle. - 2 spoons recommended!

userxx · 08/12/2021 15:47

@MindTheGapMoveAlong Its on my list! Thanks for the 2 spoon tip :)

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/12/2021 16:42

we have family in Heaton Moor, and although there are a few bars there IMVHO the feel is definitely more suburban than urban. Whalley Range is a good shout - short, not too terrifying cycle to university, close to Chorlton for when you CBA to go into town, pretty green for how near in it is. The schools aren't sought-after and so it's not a classic young family pick, but that's not an issue for the OP.
