@LivingInaBuildingSite

New hob photo!
Gorgeous!

Do you mind me asking what made you go for gas over induction?

Callmejudith · 11/01/2022 21:23

Oh that’s lovely!!

Mostly my DH wanted gas. He’s the cook in this house so I’m happy to go with what he wants.
Induction looks smarter but I never mastered my mums so I wasn’t set on having one.

wonkylegs · 11/01/2022 22:26

@LivingInaBuildingSite
Looks smart
I know we should be moving away from gas (I often tell others of the sustainable argument) but I prefer cooking on it, so our last hob was gas too. I think my memories of our old electric hob when I was growing up have probably clouded my judgment.

Classicblunder · 12/01/2022 06:49

I love cooking on gas but I think my DH has sold me on the sustainability point. But I am still slightly undecided

LivingInaBuildingSite · 12/01/2022 06:51

Definitely, old electric jobs were baaad!

I agree with the sustainability argument and I feel it’s a bit like the heat pump issue. Not quite there yet.
When all the tech evolves a bit and we move away from a gas boiler, I’d be happy to switch the hob for something else. Dh still might take some convincing as I tend to be greener than him.

I’ve been reading something recently about how the push away from non green fuels is actually leading to demand and supply issues with gas and electricity as we haven’t reliably replaced them yet. I wish things would speed up and improve though.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 10:18

I've bought a gas range cos it's pretty 😂

I debated the induction top range and it just didn't look as nice. I know this will be my biggest post-reno regret haha. Beauty over cleaning practicality👩‍🍳

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 10:21

Looks lovely @LivingInaBuildingSite 🤩

LimpLettice · 12/01/2022 10:48

I've bought gas. I've had induction or ceramic for years and I miss gas. We will update again when the rest of the house isn't heated with gas but for now I'm making the most of it. The new cooker has a big wok burner which I am so excited to use!

Builder is taking the kitchen roof off next week. Shit is getting real!

Callmejudith · 12/01/2022 11:00

We went with gas, DH is the cook around here and isn't an induction fan

It was so exciting to actually use the new space today - there are still a few outstanding bits but managed to hold a meeting today with some temporary seating purloined from our conservatory.
I couldn't stop smiling, I suspect my clients think I'm crazy.

That space is beautiful! What a lovely view.
PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 12:39

@wonkylegs that pitched ceiling and view are just stunning 🤩

LimpLettice · 12/01/2022 13:58

Wow!

sluj · 12/01/2022 14:08

Beautiful pictures coming through now!
Can I ask for some specific help/advice please as I know some of you have already thought about some of these things and have great insights and practical minds

  1. We are having luxury vinyl tile flooring. Should we leave the panels off the back of the peninsula and exposed end units so the tiles can go under? It's a G shaped kitchen with lots of panels
  2. Has anyone heard horror stories of melted/discoloured quartz when used as a splashback behind an induction hob? We are having the short upstand all around but would quite like to just have a splashback there too, up to the extractor fan.
  3. Biggest headache of all - we have a 5m wall with all base units and no wall cupboards, just a shelf style extractor hood. Due to a couple of sale bargains we have a 60cm extractor hood and an 80cm induction hob. What size or shape should this darned splashback be? Bear in mind there will just be the small quartz upstand all along that wall.
Sometimes bargains should be resisted.. .
Callmejudith · 12/01/2022 14:42

Oh wow wonkylegs that is amazing! I love the ceiling so much

Callmejudith · 12/01/2022 14:44

@sluj I'd say

  1. We did leave off the panels so floor could go under on the advice of our flooring guy
  2. Not that I've heard, a friend has a quartz splashback and it's gorgeous, I wish we'd gone for the same
  3. Definitely 80cm the same width as the hob, then put the extractor right in the middle so there's 10cm either side

Has anyone used Hurlston Plumbing supplies? So much cheaper than elsewhere for bathroom fittings but not sure its dodge or not.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 18:54

@Sewfrickinamazeballs never heard of them. Any luck with trustpilot reviews? We used a big fancy bathroom company for our bathroom supply (then fitted by builder) and have had quite a few QC issues with different items. I'm glad I've been able to call an actual person and they've sent couriers each time. It would have been a pain to order online and then need to sort all that out myself

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 18:55

@sluj love the look of a quartz splashback. Agree on having it the same width as the hob

PoshWatchShitShoes · 12/01/2022 18:56

Slow progress on site. They're decorating and finishing stuff. Fingers crossed I'll have a clean house with curtains up by this time next week!!

Planning to move in on 20th 🤔 That's probably the seventh time I've set a date. Maybe lucky 😂

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find any which has me worried. They are owned by another plumbing company in Lancashire which could explain that. Might order some smallish bits and see what happens before committing to larger stuff.

How about raising the height of the upstand at this point to make a splashback and either leave it (have seen loads of people using it as a splashback) or cover with glass to protect it?
wonkylegs · 13/01/2022 11:25

@sluj
We have a short Silestone quartz upstand which runs the whole counter with a glass splash back above that just behind the hob.
My glass splashback was painted on the back by the kitchen guy to match my wall (nothing exciting just white but they would have painted it any colour I wanted)
I like the glass I can write timing notes on it when doing complicated cooking.

In theory quartz should be fine but if the hob is set too far back in the counter then you may have issues.
