Ring doorbell

Is the ring doorbell easy to set up?
How long does it take?

OP posts:
Paranoidandroidmarvin · 26/10/2021 18:33

Not too long. I am actually not a fan. My app on my phone never worked. But it did on my dh phone. But in terms of setting up about ten mins. Just remember to check the battery and how much charge it has

purpleme12 · 26/10/2021 18:38

Ah right ok thought it would take longer from looking at the set up that's good
I've already bought it so hope it works for me!!

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 26/10/2021 18:52

It’s good as you can see who is there. And I can watch my cat going up and down Grin I just could never talk to anyone and that was the whole point of it. We really moving on Friday and we are taking it with us and putting it up again.

PeoplePleaserBe · 26/10/2021 21:58

It’s as good as the wifi and the charge in the batteries in the camera and phone.

Would I buy it again? Nope.
Am I glad I bought it? Nope, not really, it’s not really any different to sneakily looking out of a side window to see who’s at my door.

Next time I’ll get hardwired CCTV with a blackbox thingy to ensure it’s done as securely as possible, covering all aspects & angles of my land. Plus I need it to alert me overnight when the camera is triggered….Ring doesn’t do that as my phone is on silent.

purpleme12 · 26/10/2021 22:13

But it records when someone is in the camera vision doesn't it?

OP posts:
TheRealMrsMorningstar · 26/10/2021 22:20

@purpleme12

But it records when someone is in the camera vision doesn't it?
Only if you pay a monthly fee to ring/amazon (we pay £8). Then it only holds it for 30 days unless you download the recordings.

We also have normal cctv dotted around our property and it is much better; clearer image, sound etc. I probably in hindsight wouldn't have got the ring doorbell and would have put an extra cctv camera up instead - but it is a bit more discrete I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

purpleme12 · 26/10/2021 22:33

Ah well it's on order now
I wouldn't have normally even got it but my next door neighbours are harassing us so I'm being forced into getting these security measures 😞

Rather than screw the backing/support bracket into the doorjamb, I bought some super strong, fairly wide double sided tape which was a lot more convenient, less permanent and seems to be working quite well. When I pull the doorbell off to re-charge it, the bracket doesn't budge.

All up, it probably took a maximum of 20 minutes from start to finish. That includes downloading the app, reading the directions and putting it into position.

Dogsandbabies · 27/10/2021 08:23

I would buy mine again. The set up was really easy and it has some great functionality. You can hear and speak to anyone outside (very handy when you are breastfeeding and you want to ask them to leave the package at the door). You can pay the yearly fee in advance and it records and stores videos for 30 days, I think. There you can review and download and permanently store any videos you need. I think there is a yearly discount, I paid £24 for the year.

It works perfectly on my phone and my DPs, iPhone and android. Finally, the app alerts us when battery is low and we can recharge. We have had it since the end of May and only had to recharge the battery once. The battery pops off in seconds and changes in a few hours.

I would definitely buy it again.

MrMrsJones · 27/10/2021 08:26

We bought a plug in one for the front door and a CCTV camera for the back garden..fantastic

FinallyHere · 27/10/2021 08:37

I tried two different ones, think they were in wired to the power pro and the battery 3

We had to upgrade the WiFi signal to make sure it connected.

All now taken down again and given away.

The units were not reliable snd even when they did work, the notifications just took too long to appear on my phone. If we were still away all the time, I expect I would not have noticed the delay but I could hear people at the door snd go downstairs to open the doors before the notification popped up.

I'm looking out for another one, not heard anything yet to make me buy again.

mommybear1 · 27/10/2021 08:56

I like ours we have cctv as well so it's a handy addition. The only criticism I have is that it is only as good as your wifi. So if you go out if you are in a poor wifi area you won't necessarily get the notification or be able to answer the doorbell.

purpleme12 · 27/10/2021 09:35

Thanks everyone it's useful to know
I am more getting it for security than anything else so that I can have evidence as my neighbour is harassing us
So if there's a delay while that's not great, what I'm really getting it for is evidence in case he does something

Amberflames · 27/10/2021 09:41

I like ours. When wfh I work at the back of the house, a couple of floors up, so helpful to see if it’s worth me running down the stairs to answer. But I have never used it to speak to someone at the door.

donotdisturbmode · 27/10/2021 10:05

Can I ask which ones you recommend please? Sorry to jump on the OP's post!

I'm purely looking for the camera side of things, see who turns up if I'm not there etc. Would anyone be able to recommend which one would be best for me please? I'm not looking for anything too fancy. Just security purposes really, more as a deterrent.

Thanks 😊

We got our ring camera after a parcel was left on our doorstep (against instructions) and was stolen within 30 minutes. It unnerved me, so I just wanted something quick and easy for my own reassurance rather than anything else.

As others have said, it depends on your own Wi-fi and remembering to charge it. It took moments to set up and install, we bought a second battery so we can just swap straightaway. It was easy to set it up so that it only covers our drive way, the notifications aren't delayed for me and the app works fine. It was weird when we were away for the week and I got a notification each day when the postman was delivering, but it did also reassure me that no one was sneaking around whilst we weren't there.

Lindy2 · 27/10/2021 10:21

I like ours. It was easy to set up. No more than 15 minutes or so and records pretty well. Our internet sometimes makes the images a bit jumpy but that's our broadband not the doorbell.

Would you mind sharing a link to which one you have please?
AssassinatedBeauty · 27/10/2021 12:20

We got the stick up cam battery powered, so this one:

en-uk.ring.com/products/stick-up-security-camera-battery?variant=32696362205277

Initially we just got this, and then later decided to get a second battery once we were happy with it and how it was working.

Cranncat · 27/10/2021 14:38

Sorry to hijack thread, but this came up on 'Active' just as I was thinking about Ring doorbells vs security cameras etc. We're having a new electronic front gate fitted which will mean that people will have to buzz from outside (family will have a code). We have a long, steeply-sloping front garden, which means the gate is quite a way from the house. Is this going to be an issue for wifi etc, does anyone know? I mean, does the house wi-fi need to cover the location where the camera is?

We also have a tall house, and I work at the top and can't see anyone at the gate from the window, so want to be able to talk to them and buzz them in -- is Ring suitable for this?

@TheRealMrsMorningstar -- we want security cameras as well, but don't want to pay for unecessary duplication...? If you had any thoughts on how you would have proceeded with hindsight, I'd be grateful for any pointers.

Thanks, all.

AssassinatedBeauty · 27/10/2021 14:49

Won't the gate buzzer system have a camera, or perhaps it could have a camera if the current spec is just for an intercom? Your house wifi is unlikely to reach that far, but if you are having an electric gate presumably that involves laying a powerline and comms it could include a wired internet connection.

I know our builder linked electric cable down the drive when we were rewiring the house this summer. I suppose what I’m trying to figure out is how to combine a gate opening/intercom system with security without duplicating unnecessarily.
BunNcheese · 27/10/2021 16:20

I have got one and I love it. I talk to the children through it when the kids are in the garden.

The picture quality is fantastic so clear. I have the peep hole version and sometimes I have to adjust it every so often but it's definitely worth it.

It's also great that when I'm on holiday I can see what's going on. I wouldn't be without mine OP.

Whenthedealgoesdown · 28/10/2021 05:17

They are OK but if you go on holiday to a place with poor phone signal it takes an age to load or sometimes doesn't even work so it is very dependent on a good phone signal when you are away from the house.

Redglitter · 28/10/2021 05:56

I love mine. I like the extra feeling of security it gives me

I'd recommend getting it hard wired if you can. Makes it a lot easier
