“Naice” West(ish) London Neighbourhoods

Depopdee · 17/10/2021 11:02

Currently live in South Kensington, would love to stay here but really want more space and can’t afford to add another £X00k to the mortgage, so somewhat reluctantly looking at moving.

Currently looking at Richmond, Wimbledon, St John’s Wood. Ideally want to be near a big park and needs to be a decent journey by car to LHR as I travel weekly. Any tips on other places I should consider would be gratefully received.

I’m in a similar situation. Prices are just too high for me. I’m in West london but looking at moving further out. I’ve looked at Richmond, whitton, barnes, isleworth, kew, Hounslow and Brentford. Not sure about any of those places. Southhall has cheaper properties but I don’t know it. And I like to be near a waitrose and a park.

sunshinesupermum · 17/10/2021 18:04

It rather depends on your budget. I'm in Putney so have the Thames, Richmond Park, and both Wimbledon and Putney Common a stone's throw away. Easy enough drive to LHR too.

Xiaoxiong · 17/10/2021 18:14

Would you consider the other side of LHR - windsor, ascot, Sunningdale etc? Plenty of branches of Waitrose and naice high streets round there, commutable to central london, and parks don't get bigger than windsor great park. Are schools a consideration?

The other option is along the M4 corridor that will soon open up more for the london once crossrail opens and you don't have to change to the tube at paddington.

I used to fly to geneva at least once a week and being 4.5 miles from terminal 5 coming from the west is no bad thing when you travel that much.

Xiaoxiong · 17/10/2021 18:15

But yes, completely depends on your budget and needs (kids? Parking? Detached?)

Selinaserena · 17/10/2021 18:17

Ealing

KittyBurrito · 17/10/2021 18:34

Ham is an easy walk into Richmond, and is considerably more affordable?

user1477249785 · 17/10/2021 18:34

Maida Vale is the dream.

Maida Vale is the dream.

Chiswick is about half an hour from Heathrow by cab, lots of nice houses and parks. Plus the river. Different areas of Chiswick have different characteristics.

Richmond is a bit more suburban, and right under Heathrow flight path so lots of plane noise, but also nice. You can be near The Green, or the park.

Starseeking · 17/10/2021 18:56

People would be able to recommend more specifically if you outline what you're looking for, and top budget in terms of house, and whether schools are a consideration. £700k in one of the areas mentioned would get you what you'd need £1.5m for in others of the areas mentioned.

West Ealing
Hanwell
London borough of Ealing so great green parks around
You won't lose money
Great transport links
Lovely mix of chain and independent shops and eateries

FortunesFavour · 17/10/2021 19:00

South Ealing. Look for Walpole Park and Lammas park.

SpidersAreShitheads · 18/10/2021 00:44

@Cissyandflora

I owned a flat in Southall for quite a few years. I wouldn't recommend living in that area to anyone tbh. Happy to discuss over pm with anyone who wants to know more.

There's Uxbridge which is a bit further along the same bus route, and it has the added advantage of being on the Tube lines. Loads of green spaces in and around Uxbridge.

Or, if you want to go further into London than Southall rather than out, try Ealing or Greenford.

You also mention Hounslow - that wasn't the best area either. Harrow was very nice though and that's not far away.

Springplanting · 18/10/2021 00:58

East Sheen?

Comefromaway · 18/10/2021 10:32

I don;t know what house prices are like as dd rents but she is very happy in West Ealing. She's a student, but says its a nice family area which suits her.

Why do these threads often start without mention of budget? It’s so key to anyone giving advice.

Depopdee · 18/10/2021 16:06

Thanks for all the replies, some areas I wouldn’t have thought of such as Ealing which I’ll have a wander through this weekend.

While I obv wouldn’t say money’s no object (if only!) pretty much any zone 2+ neighbourhood is doable by moving from where I live currently. I’m also aware that when you start mentioning spending seven figures on a flat these threads can quickly descend into “more money than sense” “you can buy a castle for a fiver where I live” etc. Which isn’t particularly useful to anyone Grin

I would have thought that SJW is more expensive than south Ken? How about Maida Vale (close to Paddington rec) but also not far from regents. Or Queen’s Park (close to Queen’s Park obvs!). Also Kew is gorgeous. Much prefer it to Richmond but it’s right next door if you want to do shopping there etc.

Verite1 · 18/10/2021 16:48

Slightly further north - Belsize Park, Dartmouth park, parts of gospel oak are all lovely and by the Heath.
West or south Hampstead - great transport links and about 20/30 mins walk to Regent’s Park, Queen’s Park, Paddington rec, Hampstead Heath depending on where you look.

EdgeOfTheSky · 18/10/2021 17:08

Hampton Wick. Nice independent cafes and small shops. On the river, on Bushey Park and Hampton Court Park. Stroll over the bridge to Kingston, with it’s lively riverfront and great shopping centre.

user1477249785 · 18/10/2021 20:09

OP have you thought about Hampstead or Mill Hill? Both more NW London but might fit the bill

AtillatheHun · 18/10/2021 20:12

W9. God's own postcode.

Springplanting · 18/10/2021 20:14

Muswell Hill is lovely

Thatswhatmamasaid · 18/10/2021 20:17

Cissyandflora you definitely won't find a Waitrose in Southall!
