Tap left on for 24 hours...how much will it cost?

Shower was left on from 7am yesterday morning, not full blast but more than a little trickle. I have only just noticed and switched it off. Does anyone know how much roughly that might cost? I mean on the water bill. The plug wasn't in so luckily no water damage.

Are you on a meter?
If it was only trickling rather than full blast then hopefully it won't be too bad

PigletJohn · 17/10/2021 09:29

Do you seriously mean you have a plug-in electric shower?

PigletJohn · 17/10/2021 09:30

Oh no, sorry, you mean the bath plug.

dementedpixie · 17/10/2021 09:30

Shes talking about the water cost not the electricity cost

TheQueef · 17/10/2021 09:30

I'm guessing bath plug so no flood John Grin

TopCatsTopHat · 17/10/2021 09:31

You could look at your water bill. It will tell you the last meter reading and the unit cost. Then you could work out what the bill would currently stand at and that will give you the information you need.

TopCatsTopHat · 17/10/2021 09:33

You could look at current meter reading today to get your costs that should say

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 17/10/2021 09:34

It won't be that much, my parents have a big 12 by 5 ft pool they fill up in the summer and it adds just under £10 to their bill.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 17/10/2021 09:35

I'd be more concerned about the electricity bill than the water bill!

"I'd be more concerned about the electricity bill than the water bill"

DH left the new fan on in the bathroom all day yesterday. Sad

thekaratekid · 17/10/2021 10:04

We had a toilet which was constantly refilling and going down the overflow pipe (faintest hissing sound and overflow was hidden in the cistern). We eventually twigged due to our water bill doubling, but it had been going on atleast 2 months. So 24 hours will probably not even register. You would probably use more water washing the car or something.

househuntinginthesouth · 17/10/2021 10:09

Ok thank you I'll try those

An extractor fan doesn't cost a lot to run
househuntinginthesouth · 17/10/2021 10:13

Sorry pressed "post" early.
Thanks for your advice everyone. I'm glad it won't be too bad.
Embarrassed to ask this if it's obvious but why does leaving the water on affect the electricity?

OP posts:
LizzieSiddal · 17/10/2021 10:15

If it is an electric shower, the water would have been heated as it was flowing. That will affect the electrify bill.

PotteringAlong · 17/10/2021 10:15

Because the water in the shower needs heating up! Your shower doesn’t run cold water!

PotteringAlong · 17/10/2021 10:16

Unless it’s come out of your boiler, then it’s just wasted the hot water you had left

sandgrown · 17/10/2021 10:16

When we had a faulty toilet the water company wrote to us saying they had noticed our consumption had increased and was there a leak ?

thekaratekid · 17/10/2021 10:18

It it was left on hot, then it could affect both gas (if you have a combi boiler and no hot water tank) and electric (if it is an electric shower). If left on cold, then no gas worries, but could still use electric if the shower has an electric pump.

dementedpixie · 17/10/2021 10:19

Because showers use electricity to run whether they are power showers or electric showers

thekaratekid · 17/10/2021 10:21

@sandgrown this was about 10 year ago, so not sure if things have changed. We just had to figure it out by going round and inspecting each water outlet until we found the fault. It was rented so took ages for the landlord to fix the issue as well Hmm. Until it was fixed we had to manually turn off the water inlet to the toilet everyday when we went to work to stop wasting gallons of water. Confused

FWBNC · 17/10/2021 10:22

I doubt you'll notice the difference on your water bill.

MurielSpriggs · 17/10/2021 10:23

If it was 24 hours of hot, or warm, water going down the plug hole then that will be much more expensive I'm afraid. Heating water uses a lot of energy.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 17/10/2021 10:26

As others have said its doubtful you will notice the water but if otvwas heating the water I would worry about your gas/electricity bill

Svalberg · 17/10/2021 10:26

Ours doesn't, not all showers are electric ones. If it was only a trickle and it was running off a combi type boiler it possibly wasn't pulling enough water to trigger the water heating up either.
