Do you call it the room it is….

We are still calling it the extension but I think that’s coz we haven’t moved in completely yet….

Replaced a narrow conservatory with an extension on the kitchen (to make the kitchen bigger). That was 2014. The room in still referred to in two half's, the kitchen and the conservatory!

EgSk · 16/10/2021 13:24

We are weeks away from our extension being finished and have no idea what to call it . It’s our kitchen , dinning and main living space . We keep calling it our back room 😕

CosmicComfort · 16/10/2021 13:46

Ours became the back room and has been that way for 14 years!

The kitchen and dining room were knocked through and we extended out back so now have one big room with kitchen, dining area and sofa.

We still can’t think of a better name for it…..

TertiusLydgate · 16/10/2021 13:50

We knocked down walls to make one big kitchen instead of a kitchen and dining room. This was 8 years ago.

One end is still called the dining room by the rest of my family. I can be heard shouting THE KITCHEN! several times a week. 🙄

CatkinToadflax · 16/10/2021 14:49

My mum has “the extension”. It was built in 1987! Grin

Raffaello · 16/10/2021 15:05

We converted a garage into a dining room in 2009 it’s still referred to as ‘down the garage’ 😂

maofteens · 16/10/2021 15:20

I extended to make an orangery. I always called it the extension.
Where I am now is extended to make a dining area or family room - we will use it for dining but I can imagine we will call it the extension too, even though we didn't extend it ourselves.

Concestor · 16/10/2021 15:36

We had a wraparound extension that is now or kitchen, living room, dining room, and downstairs toilet. We can those rooms what they are, it would be weird calling all of that one name.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 16/10/2021 15:39

We call it by its room names unless referring to the building project as a whole

PenCreed · 16/10/2021 18:52

We refer to "the extension bedroom" in our house. We didn't even build the extension, the woman we bought the house from did! It's above the kitchen so downstairs is easy, but it's either calling it that or "the other spare room" and both sound wanky tbh.

FuzzyPuffling · 16/10/2021 18:57

I call it "the Orangery". (See my other thread)

Actually, that's a fib. I don't have an extension. Waaaah!

The big room

Which sounds a bit twatty but it's stuck.

It's one of the ubiquitous kitchen dining sitting etc rooms with doors onto garden. Not sure what else to call it! Any ideas?

Also these extensions been in fashion for decades now (thanks to grand designs!) so any minute they will be totally dated and out of favour and everyone will put partitions in I reckon !

NormallyFairlyLevelHeaded · 16/10/2021 21:41

I’m quite liking orangery for the pretentious factor. It is in no way an orangery.

OP posts:
dingit · 16/10/2021 21:46

13 years and our bedroom is still the loft

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 21:49

My parents have been calling theirs the extension for 40 years. It's a dining/sofa area off the kitchen but they have a formal dining room too so the extension it is.

alphabetspagetti · 16/10/2021 21:53

In the village where I grew up, the road in & out is known by the locals as "the new road". It was completed in 1926... yes, 95 years ago.

NiceGerbil · 16/10/2021 21:59

My old boss said something was in the orangery at home. Had not heard it before so said wow! You have oranges growing?!

She said no. I said oh. What sort of building is it? She essentially described a conservatory iirc.

I admit thinking. Well that's over selling it somewhat with that name! What a tit.

coodawoodashooda · 16/10/2021 21:59

'The extension,' must have been built 35 years ago, if not more than that.

Hahaha!
NiceGerbil · 16/10/2021 22:03

If you really want to go for it in that way, well what I would go for is eg

Morning room
Breakfast room
East (west etc) wing
Etc.

If used confidently it implies you also have all the other rooms-

Billiards room
Smoking (vaping?) room
Dining room and breakfast room and afternoon tea Room
Orangery natch also conservatory, sun room and tropical plant glass room
Room for drinks before dinner
Etc etc etc

Legoisthebest · 16/10/2021 22:27

1981 ours was built (I say 'ours' but it's my parents house). I still call it The Extension. Despite my mum's attempts to call it 'the utility room' it will always be The Extension.
Always Grin

CoolShoeshine · 16/10/2021 22:37

We had our conservatory replaced with an extension and the architect called it a “sun room” but we feel a bit wanky calling it that so the extension it will be called forever Grin

Kitkat151 · 16/10/2021 22:57

My mum calls herS the sun room as it has a massive lantern roof window....she has quadruple bifold doors.... and the back of her house is west facing..so the room has lots of light

orangeautumnleaves · 16/10/2021 23:02

Ours is now called the back room. It's an open plan kitchen/ dinner with a living space. So it's become the back room to encompass everything I guess?!
