Good Poo Loos: Can we talk toilets & their shapes - modern ‘shelf’ types vs older ‘bowls’??

So we are mid-lots of work.

We recently put in new toilets; in the loft and first floor.
I need to choose a new one for the downstairs soon.

The first floor one is a wall hung modern rimless Rak ceramics moon something I think that I liked the look of.

The loft one looks older style but doesn’t seem to have enough water in the bowl IYKWIM.

So both are less than ideal for pooing in. The loft one marks horribly and the Rak one is even worse, the poo sort of ‘sits there’.

I’ve learnt to put loo roll on the ‘shelf’ first before I go which helps but the kids don’t remember.

Before we started work our downstairs loo was perfect for poos 😂
So I want the same older style but not sure even the modern older looking ones are the same shape, given the loft one.

Does anyone have any tips for good poo loos that they’ve bought recently?!

Bump?

Replaced a couple of ours recently. Went for Duravit - can’t remember the model but one is wall hung and the other isn’t. Neither have the ‘shelf’ feature (ironically, as they are German made and the Germans are especially keen on a meticulous examination of their bowel movements, apparently) and both flush away anything left behind very nicely.

Thank you Jaundiced! I shall have a Google.

We have Duravit Happy D toilets that have no shelf and flush nicely.

(Sentences you never thought you’d write…)

I know right?!

I just don’t want to make the same mistake and get another bad poo loo!

Of course if this one is good, then everyone will use it lol! If it’s good enough, I may even have to change the other ones, or is that excessive? 😂

We had an older style and it was fine, we've now got quite a tall one in perhaps a more traditional style (DH is 6'4 and I'm 5'9) the height works for us but you get marks where you didn't before, they flush away straight away but I don't like it, it's unpleasant. I always look (🤢) as I nearly flushed a rim cleaner thing before by accident and I'm paranoid I'll do it again.

a basic cheap one from plumbcentre is your best bet, traditional shape. Easier for replacing seats too

Think I agree with this. Have wall hanging malarkey upstairs in new bathroom which is great for mopping under but the bloody integrated flush malarkey has been a pain in the arse when playing up - ripping seal of top lid to bet to inner flush mechanism. As for flushability, DD and DH always seem to clog it up which causes me a nasty shock when they don't sort it straight away. Envy

I think this is my best bet, and a good point about seat replacement.

I got a new water saving loo a couple of years ago and regretted it ever since.
(since I have IBS, my poos are easily flushable as they are never "logs")
But the flush is inadequate which means post-wee the water is not clear

StrongArm · 21/09/2021 20:20

We've just moved and the loos are fabulous for this. No shelf to note and the poos drop directly into the water so no horrible smears to sort out unless you've had a bit of a bad run. Given the way this house has been done up they are bound to be the cheapest loos available and are v old but I will check for you!

LittleEsme · 21/09/2021 20:23

I like the sound of these looks already!

That said, I fancied quite a funky round pedastol loo in a showroom last week. Looked nice but I shouldn't be tempted!!

raaaasss · 21/09/2021 20:24

Came on specifically to warn against a rimless Rak! It's making me want to move house..

HotPenguin · 21/09/2021 20:24

Ah happy memories, when I was a kid we moved to Europe for a bit and the "poo shelf" was a constant subject of conversation. I didn't think the poo shelf existed in GB. Brexit hasn't stopped the poo shelves coming over.

StrongArm · 21/09/2021 20:33

Ok there are no names or markings on the old loos

What I would say makes them better is the hole with the water in comes further forward in the bowl (towards the front) than others loos we've had so when you drop, you're dropping directly into the hole filled with water in it if that makes sense - so if you're assessing loos I would look for that bit!

ImNotDancing · 21/09/2021 20:34

I fucking hate wall hanging loos 🙈

User0ne · 21/09/2021 20:42

Thanks OP, I'm desperate to replace the loos in our new (to us) home for this exact reason 🤢

minipie · 21/09/2021 20:44

I have Villeroy & boch Subway x 4 in my house. Three of them are the compact version for space saving and they have no shelf. Unfortunately DH lobbied for a full size version in our en suite and it has the most shelfy shelf ever. Great if you want to inspect your poo daily (apparently many Germans do?) not so great if you want a clean loo.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 21/09/2021 20:49

A vote for ‘comfort height’ loos- 5cms taller and much more comfortable. Ours is rimless, don’t know what brand, sometimes needs a double flush for generous paper usage but otherwise no complaints. Don’t get wall hung, hidden cistern or flat to the wall, all a massive pain when they go wrong.

Telegram · 21/09/2021 20:55

Never heard of this continental shelf before. Next time I speak with my German clients I will enquire about their splashy angst.

I like my rimless Sanuex Prague. 1 yank all gone. Aha.

BiBabbles · 21/09/2021 21:08

Seconding the comfort height, even as someone who is 'only' 5'5".

Bought this one recently and it's dealt with 7 people's worth of poo easily and cleans up pretty nicely too - though I'd recommend buying it from somewhere else as the customer service was a nightmare when we needed to return the things they delivered that weren't actually ours (delivery guy literally dumped the pallets outside and left before we could check the labels, took over a week to get someone back out for it).

Kite22 · 21/09/2021 21:26

When we replaced our bathroom we started having problems with flushing things away, as all modern toilets seem to have much smaller tanks, (to save water presumably) but our waste is going into older pipes which are thinner and therefore need the greater pressure of an older style cistern.

I'm not familiar with this shelf of which you talk, but it does not sound appealing at all.

Exactly! They should come with some kind of poo warning! 🚫
