Good Poo Loos: Can we talk toilets & their shapes - modern ‘shelf’ types vs older ‘bowls’??

So we are mid-lots of work.

We recently put in new toilets; in the loft and first floor.
I need to choose a new one for the downstairs soon.

The first floor one is a wall hung modern rimless Rak ceramics moon something I think that I liked the look of.

The loft one looks older style but doesn’t seem to have enough water in the bowl IYKWIM.

So both are less than ideal for pooing in. The loft one marks horribly and the Rak one is even worse, the poo sort of ‘sits there’.

I’ve learnt to put loo roll on the ‘shelf’ first before I go which helps but the kids don’t remember.

Before we started work our downstairs loo was perfect for poos 😂
So I want the same older style but not sure even the modern older looking ones are the same shape, given the loft one.

Does anyone have any tips for good poo loos that they’ve bought recently?!

@StrongArm

Ok there are no names or markings on the old loos

What I would say makes them better is the hole with the water in comes further forward in the bowl (towards the front) than others loos we've had so when you drop, you're dropping directly into the hole filled with water in it if that makes sense - so if you're assessing loos I would look for that bit!

You are right, that’s why the new loft one doesn’t feel like it has enough water in it somehow.

I don’t know exactly how I’m going to describe what I want when it comes to ordering 😂

There do seem to be phrases that come up in the plumbing websites;

“Perfect flushing results”

“Innovative water technology”
!!

I just want it to work the way I expect a loo to work!

We've had expensive toilets. Dreadful things. Poo streaks and expensive toilet seats.

I now put in basic toilets from the plumbers merchant. Normally with an upgraded flush and soft close seat. Apart from ds2 (who eats more fruit than is healthy) no poo streaks.

Well, I've learnt something new today Grin

Much as poo shelves are awful, I hate equally the US toilets that have water so high up the bowl it's as if you're doing a shit in the bath. Major splashfest.

MarisPiper92 · 21/09/2021 22:44

Sorry, that isn't very helpful for the renovation discussion, but I feel very strongly about this.

Wallywobbles · 22/09/2021 05:19

Our is a grohe suspended one. It's pretty good in terms of fall!

StrongArm · 22/09/2021 08:55

it's the fall isn't it

I feel I have thought about this too much over the last 24 hours but going back to examine the toilet one last time, it is definitely not splashy. So it doesn't have a surplus of water. It just has a wider/deeper hole at the back that has water in it and then a steep bit to the front but because it's not that long, it doesn't act as a shelf in any way

you would think toilet manufacturers would think about these things but obviously not!

LivingOnABuildingSite · 22/09/2021 09:09

MarisPiper - 😂 haven’t been to the US for years, will have to pay attention whenever I get to go next!

StrongArm - I know! I just assumed that all toilets would work equally. I wasn’t keen on the rectangular shaped seats but other than that I had no thoughts.
Wall hung and rimless seemed like modern solutions but no one said about the shelf.

Im going to have to actually see whatever toilet I buy in person I think. The showroom people will think I’m weird as I study the interior of the bowl! 🤣

I miss my old toilet!!!

No advice but on holiday in hotels with those WCs the DC used to call them "inspection shelves" Grin.

We bought a very fancy back to the wall pan about 15 years ago when remodelling our downstairs WC. It was great until the seat broke during lockdown......... cost us £275 for a replacement.

It was such a weird shape that we must have bought and returned at least 10.................

We said when we remodel in the next year it'll be one from a plumbers merchant and we'll buy a few spare seats.

@LivingOnABuildingSite Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am having the exact same toilet issues and came across your post whilst googling the best ‘poo loos’ 😂Did you manage to find a loo without the dreaded shelf in the end? It is so hard trying to search online as hardly any show the inside of the toilet. Unfortunately, due to health issues, I am unable to get out to a store at the moment, so it would be so helpful if you managed to find a good toilet, if you could let me know the brand and model.
