Silly to have radiator next to door?

Wisteriac43 · 04/09/2021 09:22

We are moving the radiator in our living room, as it is currently sitting behind one of our sofas. Under the windows wouldn't work as we have floor length curtains. Is it silly to put the radiator next to the door?

I think you need to show the room layout and dimensions

Wisteriac43 · 04/09/2021 11:40

Attached is a picture. I was thinking of having the radiator in A or a tall one in D.

Bumping for myself

I would put in the B/C corner

RandomMess · 04/09/2021 20:04

Consider putting in a tall one or two

CraftyGin · 04/09/2021 20:10

You want to put it in a place where there will be a down-draught of cold air, hence why it is traditional to put it under a window.

RandomMess · 04/09/2021 20:13

Your probably better off getting a corner sofa so there is nothing under the other window

CherryMaple · 04/09/2021 20:17

If it’s in ‘d’ will you ever regret not being able to open the door fully back against the wall? Probably not?

Nooproblemoo · 04/09/2021 20:22

I'd put under window between a and b.
You can calculate which radiator would best heat the room: www.plumbnation.co.uk/heating-calculator/

Nooproblemoo · 04/09/2021 20:24

Sorry, didn't properly read your first post. I have floor length curtains in my bedroom and radiator is under window. I tuck the curtains on to the windowsill when the heating is on to keep radiator clear.

squareofthehypotepotenuse · 04/09/2021 20:45

I thought this was a preferred place for a radiator? Where ‘a’ is on your diagram. That’s what our plumber always said anyway…..ours are mostly in this position (designed that way)
Like under windows, there is air movement and stops the warm air being drawn out of the room (keep a hall warm was the advice we got).
It also works well for furniture placement too. You definitely need it away from a piano, if it’s acoustic!
I would speak to a heating engineer?

ChequerBoard · 04/09/2021 20:48

Speak to your plumber / heating engineer. Depending on where the existing pip runs are some of the places you are suggesting to place a radiator may be very difficult and costly to achieve.

I agree with the previous posters, under the window is by far the best place. If it's just the curtains stopping, why not add a blind so you can cover the window but leave the long curtains drawn when the heating is on?

squareofthehypotepotenuse · 04/09/2021 20:53

Given the size of the room, you may need 2 radiators… on the wall of ‘c’ , but other side of the sofa, would be a good place to tuck a second, to avoid a cold spot

Skelator1 · 04/09/2021 21:17

Ours is under the window with a sofa infront. Never had any issues getting the room warm etc.
I would be tempted to put another one in A but a tall one.

PigletJohn · 05/09/2021 00:23

"C" is a good place, because it is the longest, so you will get a better spread of heat.

tall, narrow rads tend to send a narrow plume of hot air up to the ceiling.

Many years ago, windows were notoriously cold and draughty, and radiators used to be put under them to combat the flow of cold air. This is no longer the case, since modern windows are mostly double-glazed and not draughty.

A radiator under a window also prevents you hanging tall curtains, which are a less costly way of combatting cold air from the window.

Bamaluz · 05/09/2021 13:36

Mine is in that exact position and is fine.
Where is the existing radiator now, because it would be easier to just move it along because of the existing pipe run as a pp pointed out

twinningatlife · 05/09/2021 13:39

Why does floor length curtains affect putting the rad under the window? Unless the window is floor to ceiling

Rads always look odd when placed on a random wall No matter the position

PoshWatchShitShoes · 05/09/2021 13:41

I've put 2 tall column radiators in my DC's bedroom. Where your a & b are. It works perfectly. They're 47cm wide and 1.8m tall. By Zehnder.

I've painted the rads the same colour as the walls and they blend in.

DC's room is slightly bigger (4.9m x 4.2m) with 2 external walls and very big windows and it's lovely and toasty now.

Definitely look at the BTU's you need before buying!

PoshWatchShitShoes · 05/09/2021 13:42

If you can, I'd rehang your living room door, so it opens towards the wall and you have a open entrance and a lovely view of the whole room when entering

PigletJohn · 05/09/2021 14:11

if you have curtains overhanging the radiator, they will direct the flow of warm air against the glass, which has much less insulation than the wall, so a lot of it will escape to warm the garden. It will also prevent warm air coming into the room.
Wisteriac43 · 05/09/2021 16:10

Thanks for the replies. My issue with B/C is that is likely going to be the most convenient place for us to have a piano - I can't think where one would really fit in our house otherwise.

OP posts:
ApolloandDaphne · 05/09/2021 16:24

Several radiators on my house are behind doors but they all have the doors hung the other way round so when the door is open you can't see it.

twinningatlife · 05/09/2021 17:55

@PigletJohn

But floor to ceiling curtains look at bit....odd of the window isn't floor to ceiling also

I'd shorten the curtain and put the radiator below the window

squareofthehypotepotenuse · 05/09/2021 18:23

Seriously, it will be FINE at ‘a’! And if you want to make it really toasty, add a small one at other end of room next to a sofa…whichever one currently has the radiator behind it as the pipes will already be there.
Your space ‘b’ is too small for a piano….it would have to be ‘c’.

Lotionsandpotions · 08/09/2021 21:26

What’s in the alcoves each side of the chimney breast? Could you put one in each of those? Shelves above... Allows piano in b/c corner and full length curtains over window. And as @PoshWatchShitShoes says, re-hang the door the other way.
