Very large mirror at the entrance landing. Good idea?

Hi, We have a blank wall at the entrance/ landing (see the pic). We are debating between the 2 options -

option 1) (DH idea) Very large mirror that stretches across the wall. This will brighten the room and will add X factor at the entrance. We have found a framed one that perfectly fits that space. We have a door stopper to prevent the door from banging the wall/ mirror. I'm still worried.

option 2) Smaller round mirror may be 90cm dia. But DH says that is very common and doesn't add any X factor :-)

What are your thoughts and may be any further suggestions.

I’ve been lobbying for the 1st idea, really like it

Meadowflower88 · 02/09/2021 11:39

Big one definitely if you are going to have a mirror.

chukwe · 02/09/2021 11:49

We did put a very large mirror in our lobby and love it.

It's 70cm width by 165cm height. A glass company in my area charged us £187 to install it

JennaPenna · 02/09/2021 11:51

A big one deffo!

SergeiL · 02/09/2021 11:53

Won’t your door handle bang into it though?

SoupDragon · 02/09/2021 11:54

I would also still worry about smacking the door into it though, even with a stopper!

Noshowwithoutpunch · 02/09/2021 11:56

I wouldn't want that lovely mirror behind the door.
Less X factor more Y factorConfused

BungleandGeorge · 02/09/2021 11:57

Presuming the picture is of the mirror won’t the frame get in the way? I’m not that keen on the ‘massive mirror’ look but if you want that I’d probably go with getting a flat mirror cut to fit so you can’t see any wall.

Haywirecity · 02/09/2021 11:57

Option 1. 👍

Option 2. 👎

Option 3 . Rehome your dog. To me. 🥰

vivimimi · 02/09/2021 11:58

@SergeiL - there is a door stopper at the bottom, the door handle almost 4cm gap with the wall currently.

Wow - DH will be happy to hear that his idea is getting most votes.

@Haywirecity i like your Option3 :-)

@BungleandGeorge I too was thinking the same, may be a frameless bespoke mirror will be better that stretches across the wall.

@Noshowwithoutpunch Y factor, although its behind the door, the door mostly remains closed, hence the wall surface is mostly visible.

@vivimimi. He/she is very cute.

I put a large mirror in the hall - not as big as that -and it definitely lightens it up.

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 02/09/2021 12:10

Love the big mirror. It will look great. Small mirror wouldn't have any impact.

BungleandGeorge · 02/09/2021 12:11

You’d need to be careful about vibrations causing damage if the door was thrust open/ blown open too.

OldTinHat · 02/09/2021 12:11

Definitely option one!!

SergeiL · 02/09/2021 12:12

Sorry. Totally missed the bit about the door stopper!

vivimimi · 02/09/2021 12:15

@Haywirecity its amazing, she belongs to a friend. the mirror is with them and we want to buy from them. asking £200 + van costs.

@BungleandGeorge very good point, i realise my children are not particularly careful with the door and they bang the door behind. In that case having the mirror on the frame will be better than putting completely against the wall. In that way the vibrations will be absorbed by the wall and less on the frame.

Do you have or are you planning small children?

We have a big mirror like that and every time they walk past it the DC smear their filthy hands all over it. I want to get rid of it because it looks awful despite me cleaning it constantly.

Couldhavebeenme3 · 02/09/2021 12:19

Looks like a stair return opposite the wall behind the door, what's there currently? Could you put a mirror on the wall opposite so you get the full effect even with the door open? Lovely bit of low-profile art on the wall behind the door instead?

DameAlyson · 02/09/2021 12:23

Do you really want to see yourself full length in the mirror when you come downstairs in the morning in your dressing gown when you've just rolled out of bed?

vivimimi · 02/09/2021 12:35

@ElephantandGrasshopper - fortunately both our DC are grownups and we have gone past those days :-)

@Couldhavebeenme3 we have the staircase that goes up opposite the wall.
@DameAlyson interesting angle :-) I don't mind personally, will have to check with DH. :-)

Now I'm so disappointed. 😔 I thought you were agreeing with my option that I should have her. I'm off to look at dog videos on YouTube.

Check that it's a forgiving mirror. Mine in the hall where I do my last check before leaving is well harsh. I have to run upstairs to look in the bathroom mirror for reassurance. 😄

PigletJohn · 02/09/2021 14:13

Big mirror is great. I would supplement the doorstop to ensure that the door handle can never, ever, bang the glass. Perhaps some coathooks on the wall behind the door.

vivimimi · 02/09/2021 14:30

thank you all for your wonderful thoughts.
@Haywirecity loved the concept of 'forgiving mirror', the one we are looking at is the honest and harsh :-)
