London neighbourhoods: alternatives to Notting Hill?

Hi all,

Sorry for starting yet another where to live in London thread!

I have moved recently to London, and don't know the city very well, so I’m looking for some recommendations on areas to live in. Looking until now in Notting Hill, but there are very few listings coming on the market, so want to start looking in other areas, just not sure where!

The reasons I like Notting Hill are:

  • It's central without being too busy or urban, so you can enjoy a small town feeling, all the while being 20-30 mins from the centre of London.
  • There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops etc.
  • I am looking for a period property (high ceilings, large windows, lots of natural light) and there are lots of these in Notting Hill
  • It is near Hyde Park, ideally I am looking for something near a large open green space (or even garden square access)
Any ideas or suggestions on other neighbourhoods in London which are somewhat similar? I was thinking also South Ken, however it seems like there are a lot less restaurants, bars etc than you can find in NH.

Budget is up to about £3500 p.m. potentially a little higher for the perfect property, and a 2 bed would be ideal but also open to large 1 beds.

Thanks in advance :)

Clapham?

3WildOnes · 26/08/2021 14:52

Belsize Park or Primrose Hill.

TedMullins · 26/08/2021 14:53

Herne Hill, Crystal Palace, Muswell Hill, Blackheath, Greenwich, Hackney/Walthamstow area near Victoria park?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/08/2021 14:53

Hampstead and Highgate.

Fulham, especially around Parson's Green. Not huge amount of green spacd (Parson's Green is small and nearby Elm Brtok ok but not onnthe scale if Hyde Park) but plenty of shoos/cafes/restaurants, good transport links and friendly. Thames also close by.

Primrose Hill/Belsize Park/St John’s Wood

Tangledtresses · 26/08/2021 15:04

Ladbroke Grove area has lovely huge houses and some have private squares

SquirmOfEels · 26/08/2021 15:07

Hampstead sprang to mind.

But also look at the mansion flats on Prince of Wales Drive, Battersea. It's not got so much of a villagey feel, but it's right by Battersea Park and spitting distance to Chelsea

pjani · 26/08/2021 15:08

Marylebone is very central and nice and close to Regent’s Park. Primrose Hill is often mentioned as very nice but I don’t know it to know about bars/restaurants. Hampstead very nice but a bit further out.

@CrushedPistachios

Clapham?
I had a look in Clapham, but didn't really see any of the type of property I am looking for (high ceilings, large sash windows etc)..

dellepaix · 26/08/2021 15:13

@3WildOnes

Belsize Park or Primrose Hill.
Thanks, Primrose Hill I have been looking at too (similarly stock on market as with NH), will look at Belsize Park also

Pimlico?

dellepaix · 26/08/2021 15:15

@TedMullins

Herne Hill, Crystal Palace, Muswell Hill, Blackheath, Greenwich, Hackney/Walthamstow area near Victoria park?
I would consider most of those a little too far out - I should have clarified I want to be near a tube line. Perhaps Greenwich though, I do like the area

KittenKong · 26/08/2021 15:25

St John’s wood

IntermittentParps · 26/08/2021 15:27

Walthamstow is on the Victoria line.

JuniperBeer · 26/08/2021 15:46

Highgate, Hampstead,

DoubleShotEspresso · 26/08/2021 15:48

Greenwich has loads of properties in the style of your preference and very easy to get to central London quickly

Starseeking · 26/08/2021 15:51

Definitely Clapham. Around the Northcote Road you may be able to get what you are looking for.

Maassi · 26/08/2021 15:52

Primrose hill, Holland park, Hampstead, Islington, Greenwich

marmaladehound · 26/08/2021 16:29

Hampstead was the first place that springs to mind. Very village like feel, lots of restaurants and cafes and shops. Hampstead Heath nearby, and zone 2.

Other areas; around little Venice, not too far from Notting hill and lovely. Primrose hill, Parsons Green is lovely, probably not quite as much happening as at Notting hill though, but lovely property and area.

Other village like areas are a bit further out of London, such as Wimbledon village, lovely with beautiful properties, Wimbledon common on your doorstep, lovely restaurants and bars and shops, but not the best transport links.

Clapham Old Town around Grafton Square; close to Battersea Park; Pimlico; Primrose Hill; Highgate/Dartmouth Hill Smile

SquirmOfEels · 26/08/2021 17:33

OP wants to be near the Tube, which rules out a lot of Clapham and Battersea. Grafton Square area /Old Town might work as the buildings look as if they have the tall, airy rooms she wants. I don't think between the Commons/Northcote Road have properties really like that.

Prince of Wales Drive that I mentioned earlier is a short and quite pretty walk from Sloane Square (for the Tube) and right by 2 train stations and a few handy bus routes. The mansion flats feel spacious
