London neighbourhoods: alternatives to Notting Hill?

Hi all,

Sorry for starting yet another where to live in London thread!

I have moved recently to London, and don't know the city very well, so I’m looking for some recommendations on areas to live in. Looking until now in Notting Hill, but there are very few listings coming on the market, so want to start looking in other areas, just not sure where!

The reasons I like Notting Hill are:

  • It's central without being too busy or urban, so you can enjoy a small town feeling, all the while being 20-30 mins from the centre of London.
  • There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops etc.
  • I am looking for a period property (high ceilings, large windows, lots of natural light) and there are lots of these in Notting Hill
  • It is near Hyde Park, ideally I am looking for something near a large open green space (or even garden square access)
Any ideas or suggestions on other neighbourhoods in London which are somewhat similar? I was thinking also South Ken, however it seems like there are a lot less restaurants, bars etc than you can find in NH.

Budget is up to about £3500 p.m. potentially a little higher for the perfect property, and a 2 bed would be ideal but also open to large 1 beds.

Thanks in advance :)

Highbury, Highgate, Hampstead

Battersea has a tube station opening in a few months' time.

The high ceilings and grand drawing rooms found in Notting Hill are also in Belsize Park and Primrose Hill. Bits of Highgate too.

And also Islington although I'm assuming that's a bit gritty for you OP. There are lots of lovely squares in Islington.

Thank you all for all your suggestions - will start looking into a few of the places mentioned :)

Bloomsbury, Clerkenwell, Shoreditch.

Also second Islington and Primrose hill.

Definitely Highgate village or Primrose Hill.

If you like Clapham look around Clapham Common south side / Abbeville village. Lots of those type of properties plus everything else you asked for.

Pimlico. Try Warwick square or Eccleston square.
Or Belgravia around Elizabeth street.

Or Hampstead

Some parts of Hammersmith are nice, and I love neighbouring Chiswick (around Turnham Green/Ravenscourt Park/Stamford Brook tube stations. I used to work in the area. Loads of good places to socialise along Chiswick High Rd and King Street.

Primrose Hill. V close to large green spaces (PH & Regents Park). Close Camden, Chalk farm and other busy spots. Village/ community feel. And stunning properties!

I lived there for a while and loved it.

Angel, Islington has great connections and central. Beautiful period properties on gorgeous squares. Lovely market, restaurants etc but not so much green space. Though a lovely walk along the tow path.

Clapham Old Town - Grafton square and Northside
Maybe also parts of Abbeville village
Northcote road/Between the Commons, especially the roads overlooking either Clapham Common or Wandsworth common for the huge ceiling heights
Battersea park mansion blocks - prince of Wales Drive, Albert Bridge Road
Marylebone - around Marylebone high street

Chicchicchicchiclana · 26/08/2021 20:43

I would say Pimlico, Bloomsbury, Clerkenwell, Islington, Kennington.

fhgu75764 · 26/08/2021 21:09

Bayswater, Paddington, Maida Vale, Hammersmith

mobear · 26/08/2021 21:32

As others have said, Hampstead, Primrose Hill, St. John’s Wood. If you want to stay near NH, Holland Park or South Kensington. You could also consider the roads between High Street Kensington and Notting Hill Gate, Kensington Church Street, etc. Or there are a good few mansion blocks behind/ near Kensington High Street station.

NWnature · 26/08/2021 21:50

Agree with the recommendations for Belsize, Highgate village , Dartmouth park , primrose hill, St. John’s Wood.

bunanarama · 26/08/2021 22:02

Massive Islington fan here. We were near Angel but Barnsbury / Thornhill / Cannonbury / Highbury park good

Themeparklover · 26/08/2021 22:07

I've just moved to Wembley park and absolutely love it, yes it is slightly outside but everything is on your doorstep, transport is still great and on event days it doesn't really effect you that much and I live literally above the designer outlet

SubParbanMum · 26/08/2021 22:12

Barnsbury in Islington - close to tube, garden squares, good pubs, shopping but quiet, cool and like a village. Big Georgian properties.
