How to get rid of smell of previous owners dog from carpets 🤦‍♀️

Gettingonabitnow · 14/08/2021 06:57

Hi

It’s mainly on the hall stairs and landing, but every time I walk past it I gag!

I’ve borrowed a carpet cleaner but that only seems to have enhanced it!

Shake n vac? Any better suggestions please to make it feel really clean?

Thanks

You might need it washing a few times. Make sure you don’t get it too wet. The key is to use the right amount of cleaner and to suck up the water for literally ten times as long as you think you need to

Didicat · 14/08/2021 07:37

Have you tried the neutradol powder.....

I found carpet washing made the smell worse before better when it was fully dried. However I did end up ripping out one carpet that was beyond salvage!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/08/2021 07:40

Tbh we had to replace them, nothing worked as it had clearly affected the underlay too.

HasaDigaEebowai · 14/08/2021 07:43

The underlay is often the problem

DobbyTheHouseElk · 14/08/2021 07:46

Take it all up and the underlay. Clean the floorboards and let it dry before replacing with new carpets.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 14/08/2021 07:47

Agree underlay can be the problem.

In order I'd try

  1. Bicarb everywhere and leave overnight then hoover
  2. Proffesional carpet cleaners
  3. Replace
icedcoffees · 14/08/2021 08:07

I suspect it needs replacing. Pet smells and accidents get into the underlay which means it's almost impossible to get rid of it.

We have animals and I use a foam cleaner from Morrison's - vacuum throughly then spray the foam liberally all over the carpet. It dries within a few minutes.

This

Leave the boards for a couple of months to dry out

WeatherwaxLives · 14/08/2021 08:09

You can get enzyme cleaner specifically for pet odours - my vet sells it, but you can probably get it on amazon or similar.

But sometimes it's so ingrained the only option is getting rid of the carpets and underlay (and the floorboards in one house I moved into Envy)

hedgehoglurker · 14/08/2021 08:58

We had a professional carpet clean, which didn't work. Then we bought big tubs of bicarb online, really worked into the carpet with a broom, left overnight then vacuumed. Repeated process with neutradol powder. Then again with bicarb. It was a lot of effort, but it worked!

20viona · 14/08/2021 09:03

Replacing is the only way.

user1471528245 · 14/08/2021 09:15

Tear it up and replace, it’ll be the underlay as well as the carpet, you’ll never get rid of it no matter how much you clean as it becomes psychological, once it’s in your head you’ll always smell it regardless

BrilloPaddy · 14/08/2021 09:19

You won't ever get rid of the smell. But generously sprinkling bicarb of soda, leaving overnight then hoovering 1st thing will make it bearable.

CrotchetyQuaver · 14/08/2021 09:21

I was coming on to suggest bicarbonate of soda too.

Wolfiefan · 14/08/2021 09:23

We had to rip up SDC. Stinky Dog Carpet. The underlay was also affected.

Fathernetter · 14/08/2021 09:26

We had same problem and we had to replace it nothing else worked.

HeddaGarbled · 14/08/2021 09:30

Sorry, I agree with PPs - you’ll need to replace it and the underlay. I used every product recommended, plus ones I bought from Amazon that the reviews claimed had worked, but nothing did. Even after replacing carpet and underlay, I still get the odd whiff on a hot day - I thinks it’s in the floorboards!

Wombat64 · 14/08/2021 09:32

I've shifted a few carpets & you want to be replacing them. I thought the underlay was OK in one place, then when I removed the carpet, massive stains everywhere & dessicated worms.

You need to lift the carpets anyway to check it's not gone into the floorboards, if present. Particularly, near doorways.

We also had fleas appear in one particularly God-awful place.

I am really meticulous about house training my pups but you need to be around all the time.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/08/2021 09:35

Bicarbonate of soda can help. Cover area, leave it over night and vacuum. May take a few goes. Probably won’t get rid of it completely if it’s old but it will lessen it.

BareVanilla · 14/08/2021 09:35

It will be the underlay. As clean as you get the carpets are the underlay and often floor boards are can still smell.
If you’re not ready to change carpets you can change underlay in its own. It’s a hard slog but can be done.

cushioncovers · 14/08/2021 09:57

You need to replace the carpets and underlay and clean the floorboards then leave them to air for a feed weeks before having new carpets fitted.

I bought a house that the previous owners had a dog and were elderly and their ability to keep up with housekeeping had slipped. No matter what we did the smell never went until we did the above.

Iggly · 14/08/2021 09:58

We had to rip ours up. Luckily the dog didn’t really go upstairs much. The room it was in the most was obvious from the stench.

Ripping it up was nasty job but worth it.

NiceTwin · 14/08/2021 10:00

RIP them out.
Our old owner had 9 cats. It was the first thing we did, rip all the carpets out.
6 years on, we still haven't got carpet in some rooms (we needed to do structural work first) but at least the house doesn't stink.

Gettingonabitnow · 19/08/2021 08:24

Thanks everyone, really helpful. Tried one more shampoo, didn’t work, so no resigned to bed carpets for stairs and landing as they are the worst. Going to just get something cheap that will see us a year or so before doing the whole lot.

But need some kind of runners for main bedroom so that we can at least put our feet down after a shower without gagging. Any suggestions for where to get cheap runners from? Or I did debate a big rug.

Thanks x

Cheap runners? Get off cuts from small carpet shops. You can cut them to an appropriate size yourself.
