How to get rid of smell of previous owners dog from carpets 🤦‍♀️

It’s mainly on the hall stairs and landing, but every time I walk past it I gag!

I’ve borrowed a carpet cleaner but that only seems to have enhanced it!

Shake n vac? Any better suggestions please to make it feel really clean?

Op I wouldn't worry about not having carpet down for a year. We had no carpet in some rooms for three years until we could afford it.
