Is Valspar paint any good.

I notice B&Q now mix Valspar and not Dulux. Was looking at the premium paint as it says it’s washable.
Anyone used it and found it good.

It’s good paint but I struggle to paint with it, i found it thick and tricky. I like Homebase own brand durable the best so far.

NashvilleQueen · 25/07/2021 11:51

A decorator friend of mine hates working with it.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 25/07/2021 11:51

Sadly they closed our Homebase and there’s not one nearby. I used to like their paint!

We love it and only use Valspar however I note it is marmite, some love it and others hate it. I think there was a smell issue a while back but I think that has been resolved.
I find it goes on evenly with good coverage and is hard wearing, great for cleaning marks off. We've used the matching service for a Dulux match and for DDs room added some glitter to the paint.

Msgiggles30 · 25/07/2021 11:55

I had no issues with it and walls were fresh plaster too which I know people say is trickier (misted first). Amazing vibrant colours. The tester posts are £3 here but are huge compared to other brands so you could try and see how you feel about how it goes on. I also used wilko paint which I actually really rated too 🤷‍♀️

Blamelesscars · 25/07/2021 11:56

We love it! Amazing colour choice and excellent paint.

I’ve seen some people say they’ve found it awful tho so maybe try some testers to see how well you branch mix it?

Buckleyourseatbelt · 25/07/2021 11:57

I’ve got a few walls and a front door painted with it. Never had any issue with it, except maybe too much choice!

Buckleyourseatbelt · 25/07/2021 11:57

I prefer it to F&B

Some colours are fine - good coverage, easy to paint with. Others were really tricky - smeary, poor coverage, smell weird. I used a lot in the past and there didn’t seem to be a pattern to which were good (eg wasn’t just deep colours that were awful).

A strong smell is a common complaint about them, so make sure you are able to ventilate well for several days.

I would recommend going to a proper paint place and buying a trade paint like Johnston’s - will colour match and excellent quality.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 25/07/2021 12:01

I need a specific colour mixing so a sample isn’t much use I don’t think.
I do remember the thing about the smell now. It’s for DDs room so I don’t want something that washes well.

I can't understand why people would say they can't get on with it. I've always found it brilliant paint- it's my first choice always (only exception was front door as small area and used Little Greene). I've just used it in our loft room, which is huge, and been delighted with it again. It is very wipeable, which is excellent.

Eleoura · 25/07/2021 12:03

I asked the same question last week. Our painters recommended it, but the reviews were dreadful. An independent paint shop recommended 'manor coatings'. Apparently as good as dulux trade, but half the price, due to the lack of advertising for it. The painters are currently using it, so I'll report back when its done.

Puffalicious · 25/07/2021 12:04

No, the point us that they do samples of any colour so you can see it first. They have 1000s of colours but they also colour match anything.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 25/07/2021 12:05

And doesn’t smell. I was planning on painting one wall a day and airing it out so she can still sleep in there. I see Wicks do dulux.
Also had an excellent paint centre years ago, it’s a cafe now.

That's interesting about poor reviews, I've had nothing but good results always. Strange.

Puffalicious · 25/07/2021 12:07

However, if you have a Johnstone's mix place near you they are excellent, morevexpensive but excellent.

bumhug · 25/07/2021 12:07

It's rubbish paint. Mark's really easily and the 'wipeable' finish is shit as well. See if you have a Johnstone's trade centre near you and they'll colour match any branded paints.

Definitely go for a trade paint if you can.

TeamNegan · 25/07/2021 12:09

I just had a colour match paint with Valspar and it was fine to paint with, no different to the Dulux that I already had.

They do samples in a colour match too but only in matte

ItsSnowJokes · 25/07/2021 12:11

Its a pile of shit. I got the v700 meant to be top of the range. The colour was shit and very patchy.

Go for dulux easycare. Truly scrubbable, easy to paint with and a true colour.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 25/07/2021 12:12

I used it in DD’s bedroom, it was ok to work with but has dried with a cracked sort of appearance if you look really closely. Probably will stick to other brands in future.

Rodders92 · 25/07/2021 12:13

I have used their premium emulsion a few times and that was very good, did get caught out once with the awful smell that has been reported when there was problems with a paint additive affecting batches of paint but fine since

Bluntness100 · 25/07/2021 12:17

I’ve only used the matt 800 and matched to F&L colours and it was really good. You can get a sample mixed up.

larkstar · 25/07/2021 12:25

I would never use it again. I rubbed down 6 doors to some fitted wardrobes along one wall in a bedroom, primers them correctly and the Valspar never really dried to a hard finish - several years on I can still easily scrape it off with a fingernail - anything brushing against it getting things in and out of the wardrobe scratches it.

The colours are lovely. No idea what it would be like on wallpaper or a plastered wall. I went to a lot of trouble preparing the door surfaces and can;t face doing it again - I plan to replace all the doors.

i subsequently also saw a lot of bad revies about the paint. B&Q and Valspar were unhelpful.

megletthesecond · 25/07/2021 12:34

Not really. My DD has still managed to ruin it.

I'm sure it's easy to clean if something is accidentally wiped or lightly drawn on it by a toddler. But deliberate damage does not come off.

broodyas · 25/07/2021 12:38

We've found it great, it's been on the walls of our house for several years (both white and pale/dark/bright colours) and no issues with it
