How would you do up this tiny bathroom

DP and I are buying a new house. It's not big, very small rooms but we think it could be really lovely all the same. It has one shower room, we are going to knock through into a cupboard beside it to make it just slightly bigger so we can have a bath with a shower over it. As it's such a small space we really want to make it look as nice as possible. I've been looking online for ideas of shower/baths that look quite slick/contemporary but struggling to find much so thought I'd turn to the imaginations/image search skills of mumsnet for some help.

Just seen your floor plan. That's not tiny at all. You might get more mileage with a full lengtg shower bath across the back, with shelving filling the gap. Plenty of room for basin and loo.

PickAChew · 21/07/2021 23:42

@Honeybeebloom

Think you're all definitely right about keeping the space in the kitchen.

Thinking the bath would go either on the right when you come in the door or going across the far wall where the window is.

I'm wondering if something like this would be possible/practical (relatively practical anyway)

That tub is not child friendly. They make a mess. Have something flush with the wall and not with dead space to fill with mould and fluff

Thanks for the replies. Had to google what a pocket door was, had never heard of that before. It reminds me a bit of the old bar toilets I used to use when I was wee in the place where my family are from which puts me off that a bit. They do look useful foe saving space though!

Wasn't sure if the freestanding bath idea would work practically, I think you're all right about the hassle of cleaning it and I hadn't thought about needing to move the screen, especially for kids.

I think a tiled in bath might be the way to go unless I can find quite a sleek acrylic bath.

I sent some similar bathrooms to DP but he's not too keen on the monochrome though. I quite like it but feel it would need something added to it, not sure what though, maybe a different floor?

Not sure what you've googled for "pocket door". It's essentially just a door that slides into a recess in the wall rather than opening via hinges. It means the width of the wall is slightly wider than normal (off the top of my head 20cm rather than the usual 10cm) but we have a normal door - we're in a 30s house so an oak panelled door the same as all the other doors in the house. A bit like this (you'd never know it was a pocket door until you try to open it).

We have a similarly tiny bathroom, for the modern look I'm personally into microcement for the walls (less grouting to clean!) And then some funky geometric pattern floor tiles for a bit of interest, and dark taps/shower etc to compliment it. It depends a bit on the rest of your house too, mine is going to be pretty colourful so it's quite fun to go dramatic monochrome for the bathroom!

@JaffacakeJanine

I really like the microcement! Is that expensive?

It's saying online about £75-£120 per square meter, not sure how that compares to tiles!

Bit more info here.

tbh I would possibly keep the cupboard and move the toiket in there (one with a tap over the cistern?).
then bathtub along the outside wall and sink can stay where it is.

definitely don't make the kitchen smaller.

Sssloou · 22/07/2021 11:09

Is that the modern day Artex?

Looks good though

I did similar in my bungalow - the original shower room was 1.9 x 1.7. I knocked through into the small ensuite in the master (old toilet and sink, no shower space). From there I did an L shaped bath with shower along the back wall. Tiled behind the shower (up to the end of shower screen), the back wall of the bath and the adjoining wall which had the vanity sink & mirror - went for wall hung and creates an illusion of the space being much bigger). I then painted the other two walls. Kept the toilet in the original place but did need to move the soil waste pipe from the old ensuite (not too hard). I also looked at a free standing bath but decided too much of a faff to clean underneath.

emmathedilemma · 22/07/2021 15:32

Do not get a bath that doesn't fit wall to wall particularly if you have kids, the water goes everywhere!!

Chimen · 22/07/2021 16:23

I’d have a bath with an overhead shower on one end, then those toilet in an enclosed box and then a vanity unit to the toilet.

Can you use some of the cupboard space in the hall that runs alongside your bathroom (on LHS in diagram)? Would give you more space when every cm counts.

Honeybeebloom · 22/07/2021 19:42

I'm going to stick with just converting the cupboard for more space. If i went into the other cupboard I'd have no storage in the house (it's not big).

My main thing is really what styles/designs decor wise would look good in a small space. I love the look of the microconcrete but it's above our budget.

I’m really confused. Are you buying a house with no kitchen?

Are you buying an upstairs of something that’s not been split into separate flats yet?

Because in that case, you’re going to have all kind of plumbing/building regs stuff to deal with before you start picking out tiles.

Floor plan looks like a bungalow with a possible conservatory or similar off the bedroom. Living room/kitchen are at the left hand side of the house. I would assume the op wants to switch the rooms round because it's a bit odd as it is.

I hate to tell you but you may well struggle to got a builder before September! My dd has been trying for a couple of weeks to get a builder for a bathroom / kitchen refurb. The best ones are booked up for months!
My advice, as others have suggested, is to move in, live with it for a while then decide. You may realise you can do without the hall cupboards and widen the space in the bathroom. You won’t need a bath for a newborn baby. We have a very small bathroom and we took our dimensions to our local plumbers merchants who used them to design a bathroom that’s fits, sourcing the toilet / sink / shower in specific sizes to fit the space. They came up with solutions I’d not even dreamed of!
I’d avoid covering the whole walls in tile - makes it look and feel like a municipal toilet!

Saltyslug · 23/07/2021 06:02

Love the style of the room but I’m so over grey, it’s been done to death

Have a look at 'tiny homes' ideas and other small spaces eg canal boats

thetinylife.com/designing-your-dream-tiny-house-bathroom-advice-from-a-full-time-tiny-houser/

Also if you are thinking of transferring space from the kitchen can you transfer anything else eg the washing machine?

Ooh, thanks for the link. That looks helpful!
We can put the washing machine into the garage to give more room in the kitchen.
