Im about to replace our kitchen. I keep looking at light blue cabinets like this. Would i regret it and should I stick to something more standard?
I really like this sort of thing but know its not to everyone's taste.

I think they’re lovely! Are you planning to move soon? If not, please yourself! They can always be repainted anyway.

irregularegular · 02/07/2021 17:14

I think it's very nice. And to be honest, very conservative! Not sure what you think would be "more standard"?

TeaChocKitKat · 02/07/2021 17:15

I regularly, i dunno, I just think wooden or white/ cream would be a safer bet?

I think unless you're think of moving in the next few years go for it, if it's real wood you can always have it painted.

I really like a colour called midnight blue, which sounds like a dark blue but it's really more of a dark turquoise/teal colour, trying to convince my dh to go for something a little different rather than comfortable grey.

niknac1 · 02/07/2021 17:17

I really like this kitchen, unless you are intending to sell I think you should have a kitchen you like. If it matches your budget and quality expectations I would go for it.

Dinosauraddict · 02/07/2021 17:22

I think that's lovely! Go for it OP!

TeaChocKitKat · 02/07/2021 17:23

I keep reading that dark blue kitchens will date and will soon be out of fashion. I guess light blue ones have never been in fashion! Grin I've been looking at kitchens for a little while now and keep going back to pale blue ones. I dunno what worktops you'd have though. Lots of the images seem to have white. which fills me with cleanihg horror, or very dark. If we keep our kitchen where it is rather than move it (that's another thread!) the kitchen is quite small so I want to keep it light and airy.

I had a new kitchen installed in my old house and really regretted some of my decisions afterwards so I dont want to do the same again and end up with something I'm not sure about.

Why not? You're the one whose going to be looking at it every day - do what pleases you, not what fashion dictates. Grey may be fashionably safe right now, but kitchens last for many years and it may turn out to be the avocado suite of the future.

I'm planning a new kitchen, and am toying with the idea of having darker base units and paler wall units.

ChequerBoard · 02/07/2021 17:27

Get what you like. I've been through the same dilemma and have come round to the view that it's my kitchen, I'm not installing a kitchen with a view to sell the house so I'm having what I like.

I'm having a two tone kitchen, pale wood tall unit wall with custom painted dark blue/green lower units and a veined quartz top to bring it together.

Babamamananarama · 02/07/2021 17:33

To be honest I don't think it's just the colour of cabinets which date a kitchen - all the other details eg tiles, handles, cupboard style, flooring choice, worktop will be of this time and make your kitchen feel of its time whether you like it or not, unless you make some really against the grain choices.

So in short, go for whatever you like.

milinhas · 02/07/2021 17:34

We used this for inspiration in a recent kitchen makeover (except considerably smaller…) - an alternative to white worktops? However we already had the shiny black ones and I hate them (always smudgy) but couldn’t bear the replacement cost.

littlelionroars · 02/07/2021 18:03

We've got a pale blue Howdens kitchen, which I absolutely love. We used white upper cabinets to contrast and keep the light and airy feeling.

I want white cabinets with a light blue island. I think it’s fairly standard these days.

Agree Navy and rose gold/copper will probably date (although it does look fab).

DespairingHomeowner · 02/07/2021 18:11

I have a light blue kitchen - one of the reasons I bought my current place. It gets a lot of compliments….

Pale blue is generally a colour with wide appeal, and the kitchen you have pictured looks pretty timeless to me

Hallyup6 · 02/07/2021 18:20

I love blue kitchens. I'm going to convince my husband it's what we need when we get round to redoing our hideous 20 year old grey one. Go for it!

YouCannotPossiblyBeHungry · 02/07/2021 18:42

@littlelionroars. Where did you get your lights from please? I'm on my third set in my kitchen diner as I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 02/07/2021 19:05

we went for a light blue kitchen and i love it

littlelionroars · 02/07/2021 19:13

@YouCannotPossiblyBeHungry They were from Wayfair but seem to be out of stock at the moment.

Oh that is stunning. Your kitchen is much bigger than ours but I absolutely love that. Ive seen those cabinets in Howdens and wondered what they were like in a real kitchen and they are gorgeous.

How do you find the white work tops? I worry about how practical they would be.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/07/2021 19:57

Honestly, OP, if you're not planning to move for a while, just get something you like.

As PP have said, if you have wooden doors they can always be painted later if you change your mind or want to make it easier to sell.

And another vote for that Howden's kitchen with the blue units and the cream ones on the walls.

StrongArm · 02/07/2021 19:57

We've got white granite worktops (from wickes) and they are amazing - so pleased we got them as we went for light grey/blue cabinets/cupboard doors and the contrast looks great

It's called thunder white so it's got grey running through it so doesn't look dirty

littlelionroars · 02/07/2021 20:17

@TeaChocKitKat Our counters are Silstone Quartz, I honestly haven't had a problem maintaining them. Occasionally if there is a stubborn stain I leave some lemon juice on it over night and it usually sorts it out.

mklanch · 02/07/2021 20:37

i love pale blue kitchens and hope to have one when i move.
as long as you have wooden doors it shouldnt matter as they can be painted.

FurierTransform · 02/07/2021 20:55

I'd always say to do what you like, but I do get the distinct impression that the blue kitchen is the 'avocado bathroom' of the last few years.

I definitely think that's the case with dark blue which is what has been putting me off and why I'm asking about the light blue.

I find these big purchases really stressful Confused
